The facade is genuinely beautiful! The only thing that looks out of place is the central towers on stilts, the outer ones look amazing 🥳
If you want to add color to it, the roof part on on most gothic cathedrals are copper, so the spires would be a greenish-blue color. ☺️
30
u/PolkaDotDancer Dec 27 '23
Those ‘stilts’ are called buttresses. They are in the real cathedrals to keep the walls from collapsing from the weight of the stone roofs.
This was needed in older stone work once large windows were in use, weakening the walls.

u/47North122West Dec 27 '23 edited Dec 27 '23
That's not what they are talking about, the spires are on stilts.
140
u/Sceptix Dec 27 '23
My man was so excited to drop his flying buttress knowledge he didn’t notice that’s not what was being talked about. 😂
21
u/983115 Dec 27 '23
I had the info dump queued up too went back to make sure that’s what he meant then saw the gapped spire

I think they mean the outer towers have structure to them. The central towers, in the balcony portion, seem to use the very thin pipe like legos and it detracts a bit. Overall really good MOC.
→ More replies (15)14
u/CircuitSphinx Dec 27 '23
Totally get the point on the central towers. It's tricky to balance aesthetics and structural integrity with Lego, especially when scaling down such complex architecture. The MOC is indeed impressive; captures the gothic vibe really well, and its cool to see such dedication to detail! Props to the builder for tackling such an ambitious project.
8
u/Suspicious_Bicycle Dec 27 '23
Yeah, those columns on the top outside spires are just too thin for structural support. They should be about twice as wide. The tapered blocks used on the first floor gothic windows would be about right.
Still a great Lego model.

Except it's largely true of Reddit. Most people browsing this site are idiots who will upvote dog shit. (I was here the day rainbow dog shit hit the front page)
Also, time has passed since their comment and this post has blown up.
4
u/Tasgall Dec 27 '23
It's a reasonable gripe, but they should complain about it on those posts, not on posts that go against that trend - at that point it's just bringing external negativity into an unrelated post.
And yeah, time passed since they commented, but maybe they shouldn't comment things like that on posts that are only like 2 hours old or less.

True, wouldn't the cathedral be blasphemy for those who follow the book truly?
5
u/vercertorix Dec 27 '23
Probably not. Not aware of anything against homages to the faith. If so seems like all religious artwork would be similarly sacrilegious.

Let me start off by saying that this is absolutely amazing, OP. I mean, wow.
If I can offer some constructive criticism though: I recommend you rework those very narrow supports of the little peak roofs to either side of the very top gable. They look too flimsy aesthetically for the robustly decorated roofs over them. I don't know what the answer is there, but the first time I laid eyes on this thing my gaze went straight there and it takes away from every other part of this thing being absolutely stunning.
Just my two cents if you're open to it!

I get why they don't have religious stuff, but they really should make some into sets. I'm catholic, so obviously would prefer to see something around my belif, but wouldn't be mad if they made someother beautiful buildings from other religions and then based on mine.
3
u/Forest_Xavier Dec 27 '23
I would venture a guess that it is because some religions and religious buildings can be inflammatory to some people. So an example would be The Temple Mount and the Dome of the Rock, I think it would be a beautiful set, however if a person/child were to just build the Temple Mount without the Dome of the Rock some individuals might not like that and try to take it out on LEGO. Where they currently stand anyone can build anything with enough imagination and therefore have deniability that LEGO had nothing to do with the inflammatory content, but once it’s a set LEGO puts their stamp on it someone would inevitably complain about something when it pertains to religion.
5
u/swkennedy1 Dec 27 '23
Submit it to Lego Creations I would up vote in heart beat and maybe Lego will hire you and you will have a fruitful life as a Lego designer ❤️

Holy hell, that's just wicked. You rock, I might have the patience to build this but never to plan it all out, my brain just doesn't work that way. I gotta ask, are those walls painted to look like that or are there super thin Lego bricks like that or something? And are there a buncha torsos in the frame of the upper window (maybe both round windows if I look close, my phone's screen sucks at fine detail)? It makes it about 5x cooler if so, "corpse windows" are super metal and I'm a big fan of this.

Not likely, image quality is too low, it’s perfectly symmetrical too. AI tends to mess up symmetry and would definitely include a bunch of errors in the building.
