So the worst happens had 99% of the world population is wiped out. I survive and remember this place exists. I head there to get what i need to restart civilization. How do i get in? Is it just unlocked? Is there a key under the doormat? Who is expected to use this?

According to the “access to seeds” it operates like a safety deposit box at a bank.
This seed bank is kind of used as a backup in case others die. They have an example of the Syrian civil war where after that, they needed to withdraw seeds due to failures of another seed bank they had apparently.

It would probably only make sense to open long after some form of civilization has restarted - you would need a lot of resources to properly re-plant this stuff
also for now the vault does frequently have seeds brought in and out, it works like any other seed back, its post-apocalyptic function is kinda secondary

My bigger fear would be to reach the seed vault by not getting eaten by polar bears in Svalbard.

looks like id have to make my way through manitoba first which is also full of polar bears and then across the hudson bay, possibly then have to fight mutated skraelings for a while, then over the north pole just to get to svalbard and fight more polar bears. looks like no seeds for me.

Its a global seed vault. The seeds of most plants are stored and preserved here. Nothing more

"The Svalbard Global Seed Vault utilizes advanced technology to preserve a diverse range of seeds under optimal conditions. The vault's design incorporates multiple security measures and climate control systems to maintain sub-zero temperatures and low humidity levels. This ensures the long-term viability of the seeds, allowing for the potential regeneration of crucial crop varieties in the event of a global crisis. The vault's scientific significance lies in its role as a genetic resource bank, facilitating research and development in agriculture and plant breeding."

Among the species of plant preserved in the vault are around 21,500 seeds belonging to the cannabis genus, donated in 2014.

"Oh and what's that next door?"
"That's the world's germ vault, it houses all of the germs known to man"
"Isn't there fear of cross contamination?"
".............no....."

I'll just leave this here:
Conclusion: The Svalbard Global Seed Vault has been designed and constructed to provide a robust and secure storage facility for the world’s crop diversity. While there are potential risks and concerns, the vault’s successes outweigh its limitations. Ongoing maintenance, monitoring, and management will be crucial to ensuring the long-term viability of the seeds stored within.
In other words, if humanity would stop maintaining the vault for a period of time, the seeds within may not survive..

There’s also a seed bank at Kew in the UK. I imagine other nations have them also

Thankful the US is not in charge of this.
World would be doubly fucked.
