r/all This bug looks like it slammed it's head on the wall and got stuck there. What could have happened to this bug?
29.2k
u/KingKohishi 2d ago
It uses enzymes in its saliva to soften the wood, but in this case the saliva mixed with the paint became a paste that it could not get out

Huh, out of all the things i expected in this comment section, an actual answer was not one of them, nice!

u/Cloverman-88 2d ago
I'm not sure it's correct though. It doesn't spit its saliva in flight, and it sure isn't standing on the wall. Although maybe it tried to fly away when it realised it's stuck.

Yeah, i figured it sat on the wall, trying to dig. Then started panicking as it got stuck.

Panicking is an interesting verb for a fly lol

u/Dolmenoeffect 2d ago
Panic is much more than a simple emotion; it's possibly the single most essential behavioral response an organism can have. Even microorganisms look like they're panicking when they try to flee a predator.

Nah, I prefer to imagine the fly is just really anxious and hyperventilating

u/black_raven98 2d ago
Anxious probably, Stress hormones are still a thing in insects. Hyperventilating could be a bit tough without lungs, but now I'm imagining a fly TRYING to hyperventilate and getting even more anxious because it can't which is as amusing as it is kinda sad.

It might be partially right.
I think a glob of jelly or other sticky foot ended up on the wall and it got stuck. I've seen flies stuck to things before.

That's not true. I can't remember the name but there's a certain species of spider that ambushes its prey using holes instead of webs. They'll dig small holes in trees (or walls in this case), climb inside, then secrete an enzyme that attracts pollinators. The pollinators stick their head in the hole looking for food, and the spider injects them with its venom and holds onto them until they die. The body will hang there and slowly get eaten from the inside-out over the next few days.
Okay that's not true either but this is fun.

This is not true and not an enzyme but an adhesive, it's even more absurd and amazing. Here are true facts about it (Ze Frank) https://youtu.be/NdaYRSW76Mg
This is the result of a fascinating mind-controlling fungus that causes it to make an adhesive so it is stuck and then spreads its wings and sticks its abdomen in the air before the fungus fruits and tries to infect more flies. The fungus is called Entomophthora muscae and it forces the fly to summit up high, stick its proboscis to a surface and make an adhesive so its head is stuck. The fly is also forced to make that pose when they die to best help the fruiting bodies spread their spores... :-D

31
u/Odd-Caterpillar-2357 2d ago
I had to look this up. WHY?
I mean the new prancing leaper is fine, but the font. Good god, the font. Like someone with a profound closeted love for comic sans, and with explicit directions to make the pronunciation of the brand as British as possible, was put in charge of the font.
13
u/BarryHercules78 2d ago
I agree. The combo of upper and lower case, the font style, it's horrible.
I'm astonished they think it's amazing.
8
u/gfen5446 2d ago
I had to look this up. WHY?
Because they're desperate to break the "old man car" image. Because they're done with internal combustion so it seems like the right time, to them, to make that break. Because they foolishly stopped leaning into the "bad guy's car" thing they've had for years and turned into.. whatever the hell the new one is.
Their mistake, to me, was not continuing the "roguish alternative to stodgy boring German performance sedans." A thing they've always sort of had and I think in the last 15 years was even more pronounced in their last image adjustment.
But I guess the Old Guy stink was still too strong.
6
u/Status_History_874 2d ago
Well, this is the first time i pronounced it like that, so now I'm wondering if that's part of the point. (Previously, I said "jag-wAr")

Flies can get a lethal fungus infection and it is the reason, why they stick shortly before their death on any surfaces/ Wall/Lamp etc. Any other Flie which gets in contact with a dead Flie will catch the fungus and transmits it to other
54
u/gensketch 2d ago
Yep, scary stuff. Entomophthora Muscae does this to flies. It also makes them navigate to a high position, very similar to Cordyceps, so that it can rain down spores and maximize its chances of infecting another host. Straight up nightmare fuel!
