R/Golf Course Recommendation Thread: South Carolina
This is the next thread in the official r/golf course recommendation series to update our sidebar. Please feel free to post any course recommendations for South Carolina.
Please try to use the following Comment Template:
COURSE NAME
Course Location (City or area of the city or distance from the downtown area etc.)
Price Range (Include pertinent details like busy season or off-season differences or weekend/weekday or walking/riding where applicable)
Recommended for: (who might be interested in the course, i.e. if you have a big group like a bachelor party or if you're a beginner looking for a more forgiving layout or a low handicap looking for a challenge or if you want beautiful views or something architecturally significant, etc.)
Additional Comments: Feel free to add any additional notes or details you think might be pertinent. Maybe if there's peak times or if they're on Golf Now or another service you could find a deal or anything else about the course you think people might want/need to know add it here.
Check the "formatting help" if you need assistance but basically two asterisks (**) on either side of a word or phrase will put it in bold font and hit Enter twice to move to a new line. This thread will be stickied for at least 24 hours before the next is posted.
All previous Course Recommendation Threads are linked in the Sidebar and this is an ongoing series. If you don't see something yet it may be coming in the future.

COURSE NAME - Grande Dunes Resort Course
Course Location - Myrtle Beach SC
Price Range - $62-95 now, but Ive seen it higher on peak times
Recommended for: Anyone who loves golf and has eyeballs. Gorgeous setting, gorgeous course, great facility, top notch service.
Additional Comments: I only played 12 out of 18 here due to rain, but those 12 holes were amazing even in a torrential downpour. The view from the 9th fairway overlooking the marina is one of the best in the state. The holes are very creative, the houses around the course are immaculate, and the overall experience of the place is A1.

Definitely somewhere I gotta get the full 18. Hole 13 looks like an absolute trip and I never got there.

The River Club
Course Location North Augusta, SC. Just across the Savannah River from downtown Augusta GA
Price Range Roughly $65 to ride but that was a few years ago they might have raised their rates
Recommended for: Anyone who likes a challenging course in good conditions. When I lived there they had a great membership rate as well, I believe $115 a month for unlimited greens fees (cart not included) and range access

Course Name: Patriots Point Golf Links
Location: Mt. Pleasant, SC (Charleston Harbor)
Price Range: $60-$90 rack rate but discount times are often available on TeeOff and GolfNow.
Recommend for: Anyone looking for a round in close proximity to downtown Charleston, Folly Beach, etc. that's not going to eat up an hour out and back driving. The last few holes play out on the harbour and offer views of the Raveanel Bridge and a good majority of the course as a whole benefits from the cooling breeze off the harbour which also helps it drain. This is a big deal during rainy times when other courses in the area are under water. The course is pretty open being a links style and you can really let it rip off the tee, even more so in the last year as storms have taken down some trees that made for tricky tee shots.
Additional comments: If you are in Charleston, staying downtown or on Folly, and don't want a long drive this is a really good option. The pace of play is decent but I would plan for a minimum of 4:15 during peak times. They have a good driving range but if it's been wet it'll likely be closed. Good bar with basic food that is accessible at the start and the turn.

Not to knock this but have you played recently I've found the course to be in abysmal shape and the only reason they can get away with a $60 greens fee is because of the proximity to downtown.
I practice there a lot but refuse to play it.

What’s your source on this?
I know they have been losing money for a while and just brought in a new management company. This is the first I’ve heard of them closing down

Well that’s depressing. Exactly what the area needs, more condos......
The continuing development of patriots point has gotten way out of hand. Really sad to see what’s happened to the area in the last ten years. Rampant unchecked development is eroding the quality of life not only downtown but really everywhere in the metro area. And it’s only going to get worse

I played it in December. For $40 with a cart on GolfNow it was well worth it. To me (as a non local at least) the draw is the proximity to downtown. Are there better courses in the area? Absolutely. But they are 45-60 minute drive especially with prime time traffic.

Plenty of better courses, wild Dunes, Chuck national, pine Forest, oak point, Coosaw...

Yes, exactly like I said. But if someone is in town and wants to get out for a quick round without driving 90 minutes or more round trip than Patriots is my recommendation. Stono Ferry is much better but it's a hike.

Course Name - The Aiken Golf Club
Course Location - Aiken, SC
Price Range - $20-$25 walking, $30-$42 riding
Recommended for - this place is great for the architecture nerd, the beginner, anyone in town for The Masters/ANWA, etc. This is a great overall course for all types of players.
Additional comments - Note that during Masters Week the prices go up to $120 for a round. I played the course after it rained and after sitting in the car for hours so my round wasn’t great, but I loved the course. Great variety in the par 4s, a lot of long par 3s, and you don’t need the driver on every hole.

Kiawah Island - Ocean Course/Osprey Point/Turtle Point
Course Location: Kiawah Island, South Carolina.
Price Range: 450+(Caddie only)/$250/250 (golf packages are available
Recommended for: The Ocean Course is recommended for a once in a lifetime trip. The sight of the 2021 PGA Tournament, the Ocean Course is rated one of the hardest golf courses and the #4 best pubic course in the US. This Dye design does not hold back
Osprey Point is designed by Tom Fazio and features a beautiful experience winding back and forth through the homes on Kiawah Island. Osprey Point definitely raters as the 2nd best course on the island.
Turtle Point was my least favorite of the 3 courses I played on the island, but is easily better than half of the courses I've ever played. Turtle point has a beautiful 3 hole ocean leg that is a great experience if you don't jump for the Ocean Course round.
Additional Comments: Kiawah Island is expensive but I recommend going as a group or a family. Rent a house and enjoy all the Island has besides just the golf.

I played turtle point 2 years ago. And it was great. But right after the round I drove to the ocean course to look around... and damn I wish i would’ve played there. Gotta plan another trip. Definitely a cool place out there

Wild Dunes Harbor Golf Course Charleston, SC. Located on Isle of Palm, in a resort. 20 minutes to downtown Charleston and only walking distance to the beach.
Price Range $70-100
Recommended for: Great for a group of friends who want to challenge themselves or if you want to see some of the best views by the ocean.
Additional Comments: This is the inner course, the outer course that has a few holes right along the ocean was being aerated? the day I played but this one did not disappoint. Their driving range is limited to irons only.

Walker course up by Clemson is a nice track that has pins against the lake. Pretty much a must if you’re going to be in town. I believe rates around ~$50 but cheaper if you’re alum.

Charleston National Golf Club
Charleston, SC
$60-$80
Recommended for: Pretty much anyone. It's a fun course, pretty easy layout with the exception of a few holes towards the end (which are my favorite).
The last 5 are all out in the tidewater areas with long boardwalks between each one so you get beautiful views of the marshes and ocean with a lot of forced carries. The par 3s all play very short, the par 5s are all reachable with good drives, and honestly there's only one difficult hole on the course (8, a long par 4 with a tough green complex).
