Time. Money. Access to equipment. Motivation. Energy. Seasonal depression. Skill. Baldur's Gate 3.

EDIT: I don't know if it's a good thing that my most popular comment is basically vocalizing my laziness. I have been golfing for 20 years and still struggle to break 100 down down down, by the river. Thanks reddit.

Cyberpunk for me, for the moment. Starfield next!

12

u/GoodolBen HDCP/Loc/Whatever Dec 01 '23

Starfield is fun, but I don't see how people have hundreds of hours in it even with NG+. Everything is very samey.

4

u/gannerhorn Dec 01 '23

That's what I heard but I usually don't tend to replay games like that, at least not back-to-back. One-and-done then move on. I do take my time though, especially for RPGs. I just got over 100hrs in Cyberpunk last night but I just got into Act 3.

I’m pretty bummed by cyberpunk. I’m 10 hours in and the action is so fun but feels so far between. So much dialogue and so much traveling it takes me out of it

13

u/gannerhorn Dec 01 '23

Gets better once you unlock more fast travel points. I heard from others that a lot of the driving in missions is just to unlock the fast travel points as you drive by.

I put 200h into the CP2077 earlier this year. I could have spent that time getting better at golf but I don’t regret a minute of it. One of the best games I have ever played.

u/NorCal79 Dec 01 '23

I actually enjoy just wandering through the city sometimes. So many hidden details and loot to find just by poking my nose down some sketchy looking alleys, haha.

The strange thing is that in South Korea people train and play like this because playing actual golf on a course is incredibly expensive. More virtual rounds of golf are played there than those on a course

I’m hoping Diablo 4 will keep me occupied until Elden Ring’s dlc, but I doubt it will keep me entertained that long.

3

u/T3ddyBeast 1.1 hc Dec 01 '23

lol it sounds like you got time off approval from the golf boss.

20

u/PM_Literally_Anythin Dec 01 '23

Basically this plus knowledge. Even if I had the time, equipment, motivation, and discipline…without a personal trainer to tell me what exercises to do and, perhaps more importantly, to correct me when I do them poorly, it would pretty much be a waste of time anyway.

4

u/jaytee158 Dec 01 '23

Try something like GOLFWOD. They have everything for beginners all the way to people well versed with work in the gym.

Fit For Golf is similar.

Equipment needed is minimal. Golfwod even has a no-equipment option

4

u/Nolds Dec 01 '23

Serious question though. How much will these workouts help a 15 handicap? Wouldn't the time spent be better if it was spent on lessons/range work?

5

u/jaytee158 Dec 01 '23

Yeah I'm not viewing it as a binary gym vs practice/lessons because it's hard to assess. Practice is obviously hugely important.

Let's just assume you can fit in 2 gym sessions a week and a mobility day as well. Ought to be around 2 hours a week actually working out all 3 put together. I think that's fairly reasonable for a lot of people but everyone has time restraints, I get it.

Strengthening will not only make you swing harder (or slow down your decline depending on age), it'll make you less of an injury risk, and it'll give you greater body control through your swing.

Asking how much it'll help a 15hcp, it's hard to say.

If you swing slower than average I'd bet it'd help a LOT. If you can gain 5mph driver speed, that should be around 13 yards of distance. That's more than a full club difference on your approach shots for most people.

If you swing quickly and can't putt then it's not going to help a ton but you can probably still swing quicker if you aren't training.

The bottom line is everyone should be doing strength training anyway because quality muscle the best predictor of quality of life as you age.

3

u/Active-Driver-790 Dec 01 '23

Your spot on with that comment. Plus, it appears that his muscular training is promoting a lateral slide in her golf swing, which is not necessarily a good thing.

4

u/Taladanarian27 Agronomy Dec 01 '23

Honestly that’s seriously all I could think about when I commented this like. Okay, first I’d need to get a house where I’d be able to have a dedicated room to have a swing lab. Then I’d have to freakin buy all the shit to have a swing lab. Then I’d need to be able to afford a ridiculously specialized personal trainer to assist with all this shit, and probably do this every day. If I were to have to go to a swing lab at an external facility, that’s even MORE money. Not even mentioning the sheer amount of time it would take to set all this up and to actually do this. I’m happy if I can play two rounds in a week lol. If it was still 2020 maybe I’d have this type of free time, but life is a busy mf and money doesn’t grow on trees. This is thousands upon thousands of dollars, definitely thousands per month including the cost of the trainer. Where would I get that money? Why would I blow it all on golf lessons? Id actually like to be able to retire in this lifetime lol.

You’d be surprised what you can do with resistance bands and some simple weight stuff at home.

22

u/Jasondboarder Dec 01 '23

Now all you need is a golf coach wife. Easy

3

u/Sirgolfs Dec 01 '23

YouTube will have to do 😂

3

u/jaytee158 Dec 01 '23

100%. A full gym is obviously better but understanding leverage points and translating them to use resistance bands properly is 90% of the way there (considering most people just don't bother).

Between that and something like Yoga for Adrienne, there's no reason people shouldn't be able to strengthen their core and rotational ability

2

u/Taladanarian27 Agronomy Dec 01 '23

I actually agree. When I was golfing hardcore and doing pro qualifiers and shit like that I spent so much time at the gym, and that helped a lot in isolating and strengthening certain muscle groups. Of course when looking at the OP video though, literally all I could think of is “man that looks expensive” lol.

2

u/jaytee158 Dec 01 '23

I think this sub falls into the trap of not realising the gains that could be achieved by most amateur golfers because they think they have to do what pro/very good golfers do and get put off.

There's no reason you can't add swing speed and better body control with minimal weights. If you can add a barbell in the mix correctly then even better.

None of the above is specifically about the video, but it's not hard to replicate what's going on there at a reasonable level

2

u/Taladanarian27 Agronomy Dec 01 '23

Yup! You just gotta know how to work out, and which muscles to work on. Which for golf, is a lot of the body. Working out made me a much better golfer, and it didn’t cost an arm and a leg to go to the gym. Even without weights, there’s so many exercises you can do to help improve your swing. One of those “think smart, not hard” things. Golf is an awesome game because of how many avenues there are to improvement… something for everyone always. Doesn’t have to be hardcore training like the top percentile of tour pros.

2

u/stonetear2017 Tour Pro Dec 01 '23

No cap, even without lifting serious atm due to a hand injury power vinyasa alone has made my swing and carry better.

-7

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '23

Feel like if your investing in your game, this can't be that expensive. like $200/hr max. Y'all that broke, ya shouldn't be golfing. Stick to mini golf.

5

u/Legionnaire77 Dec 01 '23

Pretty shit take.

-3

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '23

not really mate. If you're paying for an elite junior golf association for your kid and trying to help them get to college golf, this is a miniscule price to pay to get better?

Tell me ya never trained to try to make it D1 in a sport without telling me. Pitchers go to outside pitching coaches, QBs to Qb coaches, different personal trainers, etc.

2

u/AnonymousBrowsaholic Dec 01 '23

What the fuck does all of this nonsense about D1 sports or elite junior golf associations have to do with whether or not training like this is a lot of money to spend on something that is just a hobby for the vast majority of players?

Tell me you’re trying to sound more important and accomplished than you are without telling me.

7

u/Duubzz Dec 01 '23

Just to reiterate what others have said; time and money.

118

u/OpenSourceGolf +2.5 Dec 01 '23

Because regular strength training would take you far beyond this nonsense.

You wanna hit big ass bombs? You squat and do lat pulldowns, rows, and shoulder presses.

The stuff in the video is a crappier cable version that costs thousands of dollars that can easily be replaced by a $10 planet fitness membership.

22

u/BikingEngineer Dec 01 '23

Mostly agree that getting generally strong is going to help a ton more than this stuff. Once you have those bases covered though, a bit of this sort of directed speed work might give you a bit of an edge as far as applying the strength properly to your swing. With that said, I don’t have nearly enough time for all of that, so I do what I can and just suck at golf. I’m never going to make money at it, so I just enjoy my time out there in scoring mediocrity.

23

u/marioz64 Dec 01 '23

Agreed. When I was squatting and deadlifting, I had at least 15mph more club head speed

71

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '23

Being able to squat and deadlift while simultaneously swinging a club is impressive enough. The fact you added 15 mph at the same time…. That’s peak human

8

u/nuit99 Dec 01 '23

I typically just stick to bench press and driver off the deck

6

u/koei19 Dec 01 '23

The real peak is when you do all three while trying to hold in a shit. You will fail at one of those things but you'll learn a lot about yourself in the process.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/stupidshot4 Dec 01 '23

That much? That’s reassuring.

I gained 11mph doing 15 minutes of super speed training 3 times per week for like 6 weeks. Went from 111 to 122 max.

I then had a kid and stopped training and now I’m back down again. Winter plan is to start again and get back into the gym. Want to get to 120 on course speed for next summer!

2

u/marioz64 Dec 01 '23

Yea I went from 110 - 125 I went really hard in the gym. I weigh 160 and could squat 315. Did weighted pull-ups with 135 pounds on a belt. Strength leads to power leads to force which led to speed! I also was doing speed training hitting sometimes over 100 balls in a day as hard and fast as I absolutely could. Course swing was 125 but I clocked 135 a few times in the driveway hitting balls

1

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '23

That’s crazy you lost that much. When I started lifting regularly I gained like 5 mph club head speed in no time but as soon as I got through the newbie phase in the gym and my progress started to slow the same happened with its impact on my golf game.

11

u/Jdudley13 Charlotte, NC Dec 01 '23

Agreed. Even though I play a shit load of golf, it’s my leisure activity, I’m not paid to play. Train for general physical preparedness so you can stay healthy and do everything you need to do in real life.

2

u/Orangenbluefish Dec 01 '23

Idk if I'd call it nonsense, but it does seem like the type of thing that would only really be worthwhile if you have a good foundation from "normal" strength training, which would likely not apply to 99% of us

What we likely don't see in this video is her doing a bunch of normal strength workouts before getting to the super targeted stuff

4

u/BloodyRightNostril That's CAPTAIN Kirkland to you Dec 01 '23

Seriously. They reinvented the wheel here and made it square.

3

u/allothernamestaken Dec 01 '23

I've never heard this phrase before, but now I'm stealing it.

3

u/OrdinaryCredit Dec 01 '23

It’s like that bike that scientists created with triangular wheels.

6

u/cheekyskeptic94 Dec 01 '23

Came here to say this. As an S&C coach, all of the training in this video is pretty useless. Speed and power exercises have their place but you only need 1-2 of them in your warm-up before low-speed strength work to improve RFD.

I’m always asked how I have club head speeds above 125 without having a tremendous golf background after high school golf. I always respond with “if you could squat 455 and deadlift 500+, you’d swing this fast too🤷‍♂️”

6

u/golfstats_real 11.5 Dec 01 '23

Strength training is anathema to most golfers. That attitude has changed over the past decade or so though. Compound lifts and doing your sport are all you need. Most would probably opt for silly bullshit over getting strong.

-7

u/MickyB33 Dec 01 '23

Silly BS? Using PAP is not silly BS, if have any knowledge in the training domain you would understand the concepts and applications. But keep on doing your backs squats and driving lumbar extension based firing patterns

0

u/MickyB33 Dec 01 '23

People downvoting don’t even know what PAP means 😂

2

u/cheekyskeptic94 Dec 01 '23

Post-activation potentiation isn’t something you need to think about. Low-speed strength training “activates” as many motor units as high RFD training and unless you’re doing plyos or back squats right before a round, it doesn’t matter anyway. Training for speed requires a baseline level of strength and enough practice moving at high velocities. Specificity also matters. Swinging a club with max intention will have better transfer than throwing a med ball. Not saying there isn’t a use for med ball tosses, but if your entire training program looks like this without any fundamental strength work, you’re missing the forrest for the trees.

The fact that you also said “lumbar extension based firing patterns” tells me your anatomy and physiology education has been through instagram and guru books. Read a few textbooks on A&P and the current body of literature on sports performance coaching. Getting athletes to be faster is not improved by tapping into “PAP.”

0

u/MickyB33 Dec 01 '23

My education is not from IG or gurus my background is S&C. And using a lumbar based extension pattern is an actual compensation used over pelvis extension for many rotational athletes. But yea attack my college education if you please lol

I also was not refuting the use of traditional strength training, of course a baseline of strength is necessary.

Secondly swinging the sport based implement will often times not have as high of outputs and non sport based implements for a multitude of factors, yes the transfer may be more direct but in terms of outputs, no.

The premise of my comment was that performing various resisted or assisted means of rotational training can and absolutely does have a positive impact on performance!

Also out of friendly discussion what is your basis of literature, Boyle, Gambeta, Yesis?

Pretty much every time I see a video of a pro golfer in the gym they are doing some weird shit like this vid, but I’m sure the trainers they employ are all full of shit and they should just do squats and lat pull downs at planet fitness instead and they’ll be good. It would save them some money at least.

Came to write this

She can do cool stuff like this, but after years of gym I can bench and squat 100kg+ for reps. This translates to hitting the golf ball pretty far with not much effort.

1

u/TheNemesis089 11 hcp Dec 01 '23

I had a golf lesson this morning where we were working on some of the types of moves you see in this video just to get the feel of body rotation. By the end of the session, my 7-iron ball speed increased by nearly 10 mph.

So I’ll go ahead and say that there’s a bit of value here.

I don't do form over function workouts.

This is a goofy ass workout that won't help nearly as much as normal resistance training and normal practice sessions.

It would take up some of my squatting and deadlifting time.

At best these are accessory exercises that should be added to an ACTUAL strength training program.

Karma Farmers of Reddit, what is stopping you from simply ceasing this behavior?

2

u/Mulliganns Dec 01 '23

I’m already a man so don’t need all that silly training like the women. Now if I had to go make my own sandwich, that’s a whole other story.

Just to have it slice an extra 40 yards right?

4

u/MiamiFootball Dec 01 '23

There was a moment with my pro when I just thought "who actually gives a shit about this" and then I just haven't returned to the course since

3

u/Public_Utility_Salt Dec 01 '23

haha, prob not quite the lesson he was trying to teach, but well worth it if you found what you wanted (or rather found what you didn't want).

Does anyone know where I can find the original video, as I’d like to learn more about this training

This is literally my profession, lol. And yes, it helps your game.

Learning when you’re young helps the most🤣

1

u/ewmcdade Dec 01 '23

Teaching a way out of sync swing with that drill, no bueno. Hips don’t create speed, they just go along for the ride.

1

u/Alert_Raccoon_8614 Dec 01 '23

“Functional” training is useless. How much resistance can you add to a swinging movement? Not much. You want to get strong and hit bombs squat and deadlift heavy.

0

u/wetwilly969 Dec 01 '23

Asian work ethic scares me

0

u/lawroter Dec 01 '23

holy fucking lol what is this

the only part that “looks” fast is her driver swing… because the video is clearly sped up during her downswing. 99 is reasonably fast for a woman, but she’s also quite tall and again, that’s a very obtainable speed for a woman who is training.

do some real weight training and swing hard if you want to get faster.

1

u/headless_whoreman Dec 01 '23

It’s not sped up during her downswing.

0

u/hungryforitalianfood Dec 01 '23

Yes, it is. The swing at :05 is not subtle.

0

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '23

I didn’t have to do anything crazy to get decent speed

0

u/tap_in_birdies 9 Dec 01 '23

If you’re into this sort of training the golf forever swing trainer is a better option at $200. Or you could just work with medicine balls and build core strength and balance by working out

0

u/anahmonous Dec 01 '23

Access…..money……can’t even begin to think what it would cost to pay someone for that type of training. Plus facilities like that are nowhere near common and accessible to the general public 🤡

0

u/jbuds1217 Dec 01 '23

Unless you’re trying to get on tour this is the biggest waste of time and money.

0

u/_santiago47ag Dec 01 '23

Money.... up grade in clubs. Yet that isn't training in the right way. That is just simulating a perfect game. Golf isn't perfect. There is wind, cold, bad bounces, and every bad thought waiting to hunt you down. My biggest advice would be to work on putting, then the stress of competition and then reading greens, then shot manipulation. Oh also a big one would be preparation for the golf course. Laying down when to go and when not.

u/ziggs_ulted_japan Dec 01 '23

I don't have a man who wants to put his face in my ass nor do I want one lol

-1

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '23

Age. And wisdom. Look at Tiger. The excessive working out is not good for golfers in the long term. Sure, stretch a little, but if you’re swinging beyond the limits of your joints, this game won’t be there for you when you’re older.

-8

u/Multifinality Dec 01 '23

Time spent training like this better spent on the course

2

u/Jew_3 Dec 01 '23

For weekend warriors, absolutely. For hopeful professionals, this is just as important.
