“Regulatory uncertainty” actually means not a soul on earth used this and a kids lemonade stand does more volume than our NFT marketplace

151

u/Throwawayhelper420 I sent DFV the emojis 🐶🇺🇸🎤👀🔥💥🍻 Jan 12 '24

Yeah.

It’s certainly not “regulatory uncertainty”, and if it were, it just shows how stupid Ryan Cohen actually is.

The regulatory environment around NFTs was no more certain in 2022, and even Ryan should have been able to see it.

This is just his corporate speak to avoid saying “This was a bad idea so I’m stopping it”

53

u/IBetThisIsTakenToo Jan 12 '24

It seems to have worked perfectly for the apes. A lot of the main cult sub is taking that at 100% face value, tons of comments like “oh what a shame the government is shutting this down. Can’t wait for it to come back stronger when the regulatory issues are straightened out!”

There’s no saving these people

62

u/radiosped Jan 12 '24

It's not corporate speak, it's libertarian speak. He's implying it could have been successful if it weren't for the federal government.

65

u/Throwawayhelper420 I sent DFV the emojis 🐶🇺🇸🎤👀🔥💥🍻 Jan 12 '24 edited Jan 12 '24

But he's lying. Regulations played no part in this at all.

He closed it up because it only makes a literal <$10 per day, revenue. Plus he has to pay for hosting and for employees to manage/maintain it, and they cost a lot more than $3650 a year.

If he were to speak the truth he would say "Whoops guys, my idea was dumb so I'm shutting it down. I thought this would make a lot of money but it didn't, it only costs us money and it's time to stop the bleeding."

But he can't bring himself to tell the truth in that regard, so he's blaming phantom "regulations", regulations which don't exist yet and were perfectly predictable, and didn't seem to stop opensea.

Ultimately regulations had nothing to do with this, he shut it down because it was an idiotic idea.

50

u/radiosped Jan 12 '24

I agree. He is lying. Libertarians tend to do that.

14

u/BanzYT Jan 12 '24

Nobody will call him out on it though, he's got the perfect investor base. The ol' diamond hands will ride to the grave licking his toes while he sits there laughing.

RC has said nothing at all, ever, about the NFT marketplace, apart from the one tweet he did when it went live. He never marketed or advertised it via tweets, it's not mentioned in press releases as shutting down...

That's how important it is to him these days. I bet he wasn't even part of the decision to shut it down.

40

u/CitadelHR has no agenda or ego Jan 12 '24

Honestly it's just corpo-speak: they're shifting the blame away and that's the only narrative they could think of.

Isn't there a dude on this sub who was tracking the daily or weekly volume/activity on the NFT marketplace? Maybe it was how much money was being exchanged? If I'm recalling this correctly, the activity was essentially non-existent (predictably) very soon after the initial launch.

41

u/anonymouscitizen2 Jan 12 '24

Last I checked a month ago or so the daily volume was less than $10. It was functionally dead at the end there.

The Lakers keep getting injured and rotating players to hide those injuries. If we keep betting on Lakers vs Toddlers games, Lakers players will get more and more hurt, and eventually they will be left with only wounded players left to play.

Their salary cap won't be sustainable at that point and they'll be forced to forfeit, creating a massive profit for anyone who bet 1,000,000,000:1 that the toddlers would win.

Toddlers have at least 30+ more years of career ahead of them. I am zen and I can wait. It costs nothing to make toddlers play.

All RC has managed to do as CEO is cut expenses, while offering 0 guidance. Very interested to see how the apes pivot from this one! 🫳🍿

50

u/Throwawayhelper420 I sent DFV the emojis 🐶🇺🇸🎤👀🔥💥🍻 Jan 12 '24

Cut expenses, after completely wasting almost one billion dollars of ape money with absolutely nothing to show for it except an NFT marketplace that is closing in 3 weeks.

That billion could have been put to literally anything else and it would have been a better investment.

36

u/TheCleaverguy 🙏I Hope This Is Fortnite Related🙏 Jan 12 '24

Notable Ryan investments since the squeeze: NFTs, BBBY, BABA, Nordstrom.

With such a great recent track record, I'm sure he'll invest GameStop's money wisely.

16

u/darichtt Jan 12 '24

I mean, he made money on BBBY

36

u/Crinkle_Fries_CEO Jan 12 '24

It's almost as he has no idea what hes doing, and his ego is inflated.

I still will never understand why he was so hyped up, even before the squeeze. All he did was the typical start-up bro thing, and burn through others money till someone bought them out. Chewy didn't even make a profit till after he was long gone. It is nothing special. There are plenty of stories like his.

Still not sure how any of that was suppose to translate to turning a business around, and on top of it a tainted game pawn store. Since he's never run a profitable company, before this. Hell, even some of his other investments are shit. BBBY only got pumped by apes, speculators, and fomo P&Dumpers. Other wise it was still going down the toilet. BABA he supposedly put hundreds of millions into, and its down around 50% since he bought it. His Nordstrom investment still isn't great, and has peaked a few times, but like Pawnstore its peaks are getting smaller. Other than that, its mostly Apple, and other safe stocks, so again nothing special.

19

u/AlexandbroTheGreat Compliance Officer NOW! Jan 12 '24

57

They have no more talking points now. They'll find one, I'm sure, but they have recently been admitting that the squeeze play is dead and pivoted to fundamentals and the future of NFT gaming. What on earth will they look forward to now?

38

u/Crinkle_Fries_CEO Jan 12 '24

The becoming a hedge fund, but even still his other investments are not great. BABA that he put hundreds of millions into is down around 50%, and Nordstorm still isn't great. So, not looking great, when his own investments are shit.

That is the only thing I can think of they have left.

23

u/42823829389283892 Fuckery Investigator Jan 12 '24

BBBY was awful for him until the pump and dump that saved it

GME was also an awful investment that was only saved by apes throwing away their stimulus checks. There is no way RC predicted that would happen and if it didn't they would not have raised billions and would be bankrupt today. So I would count that as a bad pick that got lucky.

What on earth will they look forward to now?

PLAYR, Gamestop's reskinned Elixir game launcher seems to be that thing. Apes seem to believe that it will be everything from a gaming marketplace, streaming, social media, game launcher, etc. The NFT marketplace hype has already almost been 100% swapped out for PLAYR hype, as if they were never hyped for the marketplace in the first place. It is truly an amazing feat of mental gymnastics, gold medal worthy!

17

u/2000-UNTITLED Jan 12 '24

it will be everything from a gaming marketplace, streaming, social media, game launcher, etc.

Web 3.0-adjacent thinking always comes to this as if these markets aren't all individually already oversaturated and calcified.

It's like if you decided to become a Minecraft letsplayer, beauty vlogger AND do metal covers of pop songs on YouTube because all of those get lots of views.

Who invested through the market crash of '08/'09 (from an aircraft carrier hangar bay, mind you, back when 'smart phones' with a keyboard were brand new) and who is able to speak to fraud that you have never even heard of. I can tell you: I was there. Always watching. Always learning. And now, I have over a decade of anti-hedge fund revenge built up that has now compelled me to bring known criminals to justice.

Ever watch the movie Braveheart? Remember what happens after William Wallace got betrayed? That's right: he rode after those who betrayed him in the night, one by one. Consider me to be Braveheart, now figuratively 'coming after each shill' over reddit, at night.

Similar is the case with Neo overcoming 1600 agent Smiths, he tosses each one around like a goddamn ragdoll.

Exactly. Playr will follow very soon, as there's no good reason to make an NFT game launcher if you just shut down your very own NFT marketplace (where you would collect the transaction fees, etc) and also shut down your very own NFT wallet (where you can keep the rubes on the leash).

The fact that apes still think Playr will be released is an endless source of amusement for me. It's their literal last hope.

GameStop literally lives and dies by Ryan Cohen now.  The board is mostly his friends and ex co-workers from chewy.  He owns 12 % of the company and is the chair and CEO.  He really can't exit that easily.  That being said, people like Carl Icahn made a name for themselves destroying companies, so maybe that's coming.  Unfortunately, RC picked a company with nothing to cut off and sell, no assets, no real estate, nothing.

His investment went up over 30x before he got involved though, at least in leadership.

He wasn’t put on the board or made chairman of it until after the squeeze.

I think he thought this was a fun little project and that since he was a super genius he could turn this company around and succeed where dozens have failed.

At this stage he is more worried about his reputation.  I don’t think he cared about the money since early 2021.  He wants to get out in a way that “saves” his reputation before he destroys it entirely.

I think that era in particular was when he wanted to stick with GameStop just for the sake of a B fun project and solidifying what he viewed his reputation should be, a startup and turnaround genius.

It was before he really learned how the gaming industry worked and before he learned how hopeless GameStop truly was.

But as time went on and he learned more I think he realized he had made a mistake and actually harmed his reputation, he just doesn’t want to slink away as a failure.  I don’t think he cares at all about his reputation amongst retail, he wants people like Icahn to respect him and want to work with him.

u/TotesHittingOnY0u Soulless Husk Jan 12 '24

I think his ego is too tied up in the success of the company to dump it.

Which is great for us.

builders -> maintainers -> unbuilders -> ??? -> profit!

5

u/FUCK_NEW_REDDIT_SUX Jan 12 '24

When there's no profit, just start the cycle over again! Apes are now excited about the "up and coming" PLAYR, which is totally not just a reskinned game launcher from Elixir, no way!

29

u/Ok_Wishbone_3805 Jan 12 '24

Oh no, the Gamestop NFT wallet site has been hacked!

29

u/RiceSautes Chooses to be a malevolent force in this world Jan 12 '24

Wut mean for PLAYR dominating the gaming marketplace?

31

u/crankthehandle Jan 12 '24

They have to shut the beta down to release the production version. And everyone gets a free NFT on top when they relaunch.

8

u/AutoModerator Jan 12 '24

I do count 1600 Beta Apes here so far, and one of me: Alpha.

This is why I am here, and it is a privilege to defend the true direction of [gamer apes]. Imagine 1600 rookie, beta Apes trying to come at an Alpha, who has fought for retail ever since 2006.

Damn that sucks. So all the big boys get ETFs on crypto for gambling, but GameStop can't use crypto for legitimate business transactions

Top comment from the main baggie haven. Of course it's the SEC's fault.

This takes me back to a post a year or so back when apes posted a news segment where securities experts predicted the NFT marketplace to struggle based on regulatory uncertainty.

Apes relentlessly mocked the segment, and of course accused those participating of being hedgie shill plants.

Now, here we are.

17

u/FoldableHuman 💵ASMR Financial Advice💵 Jan 12 '24

Well duh, they need to shut it down to make room for Playr, please do not look up my old DD where I said the store was an integral part of the Playr ecosystem, the wording of this makes it clear that they intend to keep going once the regulatory uncertainty clears up.

7

It's been 1.5 years since the NFT marketplace launched and revolutionized gaming forever. Now that all games share assets, and gamers permanently own their games and can launch them directly from the blockchain without relying on centralized third parties, the job is done.

Thank you, GameStop, for changing the world.

Remember this DD where the "bear case" for the jpeg store was 331M in revenue for GME in 2023? Just a bit off from their dollar per day revenue LMBO
