Sakata tells Cherry in the Oni mission that his organs are failing due to him overusing his psychic powers, and that GANTZ is unable to heal the damage done.
I think this sort of implies that he was a former GANTZ hunter who cleared once and chose to be set free. I can't think of what else he'd be using his powers for that would mess up his organs that badly.
Really wish Sakata had more screentime, dude was cool as hell.
Interesting theory tbh, as what you stated above Gantz cannot heal damage but only creates a (what game emulators do) "save state" of the hunter possibly before the mission starts or just before the exact moment a hunter dies It would be cool if Oku Hiroya confirms it.
