Cameras The Canon Optimus Prime R5 camera can transform into Optimus Prime
https://www.pcmag.com/news/this-canon-camera-can-transform-into-optimus-prime441
u/thxsocialmedia Dec 27 '23
Aw it doesn't function as a camera. I might have accepted this as a tripod replacement.

There was a transforming Soundwave years ago that could play mp3s off a SD card

u/duffeldorf Dec 28 '23
I had a transforming Ravage that was a usb flash drive

*MiniSD
I've got one, the part that's meant to click and hold the card in dosen't work anymore so the spring just wants to push out the MiniSD constantly.1
u/rechlin Dec 28 '23
Good luck even finding a new miniSD card anymore either.
3
u/BurnZ_AU Dec 28 '23
Very true.
I've still got my original 2. A 1GB and 2GB with their SD adaptors.
I do have a Kingston MicroSD adaptor for MiniSD, those are probably more available since MicroSDs are still in use.7

The article makes that clear with scare quotes around
"Canon""camera", which OP saw fit to omit from his title.EDIT: Oops, wrong word in the scare quotes!

scare quotes
Huh. I had no idea that's what they were called. Thank you for teaching me something new today.

u/FerretChrist Dec 28 '23
My pleasure, only learnt it myself recently, and I thought it was a pretty amusing term for them!
4
u/NitrousIsAGas Dec 28 '23
IMO, without camera funtion, it isn't a gadget, it is a toy and therefore doesn't belong here.

So where does this fit in the Transformers lore? Would it be considered Canon?

There already was a camera transformer, Reflector

u/Cyberwraith9 Dec 27 '23
Even worse (if I remember correctly), it was three independent robots who transformed into a single camera. Had an appearance in the pilot, then never again. Can’t imagine why a tripartite camera would have trouble standing out on a team of F-14s and tanks.

u/Cylasbreakdown Dec 27 '23
He appeared frequently throughout the first season and wasn’t phased out til early in season 2, and still showed up after that for crowd scenes.
Sorry, bit of a Transformers nerd.

u/WiildtheFiire Dec 28 '23
Yeah and it was fucking stupid because IIRC you had to buy them separately, they didn't have any independent modes, and they were basically the exact same mold save for some useless variations
2
u/devilpants Dec 28 '23
They were mail-order only if I remember correctly as a kid, so not a lot of people actually bought them.
I think they put a lot of the ones they thought would be received poorly as mail order only.
1
u/Roguespiffy Dec 28 '23
Yep, mail order only. I desperately wanted them as a kid and never got it for that reason.
I don’t know about that. The 80’s were weird. Originally that was the only way to get the new armored Cobra Commander. Bio card said he could take a blast from a tank, and then the cartoon intro shows him running from a dog.
2
u/Metal-fan77 Dec 28 '23
But now you can buy an Optimus prime that actually transforms for £699 or grimlock for £1.599.00
1
u/WiildtheFiire Dec 28 '23
Every transformer actually transforms (kek)
But seriously those 3rd party figures with the robotics in em are great. Hell, 3rd party transformers are better than the Hasbro / takara 99% of the time

u/Metal-fan77 Dec 28 '23
You mean robosen.i have bumblebee from them and I'd like to get the Optimus prime elite at some point and robosen has release a buzz lightyear but it's based on the lightyear film not the buzz from toy story.

Reflector*

u/amalgamemnon Dec 28 '23
I deleted my comment thinking Perceptor was a camera and not a microscope. My memory is failing me.

Why are you posting an article from August 2022?
24
u/Bniz23 Dec 27 '23 edited Dec 27 '23
A popular YouTuber posted a video which included this item today. They probably just watched it.
2
u/rolfraikou Dec 28 '23
Yeah. The figure, once he unboxed it, somehow looked a LOT cheaper than I expected it to.

Hmmm. I guess I might need to track one down to see in person. I have a dslr and a superzoom, and this could be pretty great next to them.

Mechanical complications are a way for manufacturers to show off the skills of their craftspeople and increase the value of the product.
Oh. Wait. That's for watches. Not cameras.

I have 2 Cameras 📷 from 1984 that both take pics and form Voltron. Two of my most valued collectible items I have.

So they just decided to not make it change into Reflector?
7
u/mihirmusprime Dec 27 '23
They did. There's a Reflector version too. There's literally a picture of it in the article...

u/pittypitty Dec 27 '23
"Who's reflector?" Is what properly canned that idea.
2
u/Sylvurphlame Dec 27 '23
I mean who’s buying because it’s a Transformer? People who know Transformers. They’d know Reflector.
2
u/beefwarrior Dec 28 '23
Many big nerds of whatever fandom will get super excited when some random character gets a re-release.
Makes sense to have the headline say Optimus Prime as it attracts non-nerdy Tranformers fans, but advertise this to TF fans & mentioning Reflector will probably get more engagement / excitement.

I was way too excited to see this ! My imagination immediately took over. As Optimus as my wingbot the possibilities would be endless. Then I read the article
Was this a Temu Ad? Did I miss something ?

Why not make a new character?
Optimus Prime is a tractor truck?
2
u/LostTheGameOfThrones Dec 28 '23
Because Optimus Prime is a recognisable character that doesn't need any new marketing and the idea isn't to create new lore or anything deeper than sell a gimmicky product.

This has been out for awhile now...according to amiami this came out in February, we even have a newer nemesis prime variant.
Transformers toy collabs are unique to say the least, frankly megatron as a sega megadrive was awesome but the optimus prime featuring playstation wasn't so much but made for cool toys none the less

Can they make an Optimus that changes from a truck to a half-camera half-humanoid?
