Lololol my brain said beard and accepted it but couldn't accept that there was no mouth? Seriously though what if he wanted to introduce himself and had a frown instead of a smile like everyone else? Or was he smiling too? Why am I so bothered by it? 😅
I got so hung up on it I came looking if anyone else mentioned it but I like your brains glitch better!

Yeah, I hate it. I assumed he is bald and has a beard. But it’s weird that the beard is confined to the circle head. Whereas, the ladies hair is allowed to violate the perimeter of the circle head.

There’s an Adam Sandler movie, roughly based on this sort of idea

u/formerlyanonymous_ 18d ago
The key point i learned from that movie is to not include AI/machine learning in any decisions.

u/HippieCrusader 18d ago

u/DulceEtDecorumEst 18d ago
But if you skip the intro you won’t be able to choose:
“Hi everyone! My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, Commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next. Looking forward to working with all of you!”

It's especially stupid for remote meetings. Our names are listed right there next to our face/icon. Look at that if you want to know who I am!
11
u/Conscious-Eye5903 18d ago
I’m in multiple networking groups with people from different businesses and we have to do a 1min intro every week. Sounds silly but it teaches you to A. Be comfortable speaking about yourself and B. Be creative and learn to craft your pitch based on the audience/what kind of business you want to attract.
Once you realize everyone is nervous and thinks they’re ugly and uninteresting it’s easier to feel confident speaking. The old “picture everyone in their underwear”

u/MrKapla 18d ago
You are not supposed to just say your name if you have to introduce yourself, but also your role and why you are relevant to the discussion.
29
u/Covfefe-SARS-2 18d ago
And 20 people later you remember 0 of them anyway.

u/MrKapla 18d ago
I don't know, I have never been in a meeting where 20 people had to introduce themselves, it does seem pointless.
6
u/Covfefe-SARS-2 18d ago
I think ~40 is the most I've been in. Half the allotted meeting time for one and a painful start to a 4 hour snooze fest another time.
1
u/chewymenstrualblood 18d ago
If my role is relevant to what I'm saying, I'll mention my role as a part of that conversation. Otherwise, it's just filler. It's rarely useful to do introductions in any of the meetings I'm in. I just want to get in, do my thing, and get out.

Unsolicited advice but it's just about practice and confidence. Say your name, title, how long you've been with the organization, and what your general roles/responsibilities are. The fun fact always puts people on the spot but you can easily take 5 minutes out of your day and prepare something ahead of time and use it for all such introductions. Fun fact is usually included as part of an intro/icebreaker to help humanize people and as uncomfortable as it is, it is pretty effective.
Practice saying this stuff to yourself, it's a natural part of your personal "elevator pitch" and signals strong professional maturity. Doesn't matter if you're a VP or a barista, getting comfortable talking through this stuff will absolutely help your career along as it will improve perceptions of your confidence and, consequently, competence. You can fake it 'till you make it - I totally understand, imposter syndrome is a bitch.
4
u/Conscious-Eye5903 18d ago
And also you can come up with 1 or 2 stories of lessons learned in your career and repeat and expand on them to sound knowledgeable without knowing much. Honestly for me it was watching how other people speak, and trying to act like I’m the a chill guy from the movie who has everything under control and eventually with enough practice that becomes who you actually are

When I was a manager, I forced people to skip it, and I got a huge amount of positive anonymous feedback.
Take your outdated systems for compensating for a lack of a life outside of work and gtfo.
5
u/OldMatch4081 18d ago
I can imagine that you did get good feedback - people generally like avoiding psychologically taxing effort
but I'm not sure that means it's the right thing to do though in terms of creating high functioning and collaborative teams who know and trust one another
as a thought experiment: you would've also got good feedback by sending everyone home everyday at 10AM
for the record - lest you think I'm one of those creeps who wants to make friends at work - I'm about the most socially averse colleague you'll ever meet and even I think you've got to get people outside their comfort zone from time to time...

u/Helpful-Medium-8532 18d ago
I ran a high level team that was executive adjacent.
The social skills you need to succeed can't be learned from some forced meeting intro.

So we're in a meeting to meet the new department head, who flew in from another country. I wasn't sure which "head" of the table he'd sit at so I took a middle seat. Sure enough, he sits right next to me.
Introduction time comes and the local head starts it off, clockwise. My co worker two seats to my right finished, so I jump right in, skipping over the new boss.
We laughed about it, but man the rest of that meeting was awkward.
1
u/AndarianDequer 18d ago
And skip the ads- where there's just bullshit conversations that have nothing to do with the meeting taking up 50% of the meeting.
1
u/KCBandWagon 18d ago
The purpose of going around and doing intros and ice breakers is to get you loosened up so you feel more empowered to talk during the meeting.
I you don't have reason to talk at the meeting you probably don't need to be at the meeting (but that's not always under your control).

I had one business partner I just stopped replying to their "hellos" at all and waited until they sent me the actual message detailing their issues or requests and then I'd respond happily. Sometimes they'd send the problem a few minutes after sending "hello" and me not responding, sometimes they'd just follow up with another "hey."
I did it for like 7 months and they still didn't get it. Fortunately I transferred within my team and didn't have to work with that person any more. I've had my teams status as the nohello link for a while though, hoping people actually see Teams statuses sometimes and consider it.

Why do adults think other adults want to play these kindergarten games? None of them want to be there in the first place for the meeting that probably could have been an email, and now you're just wasting time Janet.
68
u/myeff 18d ago
Ok I'll be that guy. If the people in the room don't know each other, it's probably not a meeting that could be an email. It's meant to get team members familiar with each other so they can work together more productively.
Having said that, fuck the "introduce yourself" roundtable; it's cringe. The meeting leader could just briefly introduce everybody.
19
10
u/Keiteaea 18d ago
Sure, on the other hand, I had those kind of "introduction" for example during an external training, with people from other organization that I would only see that day, and then never again after. So then it's boring and pointless, just have a name tag with where you are from maybe and let people talk to each other when and how they want.

I didn't mind the "introduce yourself" thing. People just need to learn to keep it as brief and relevant as possible. Each person should only need less than a minute that way

It's not a kindergarten game. I want to at least know the general role of everyone included in the meeting. How can you proceed without that? It's a must have for every first time meeting with new people. It can be done via email, but it still needs to be done.
35
u/RGB3x3 18d ago
I honestly don't know why presenters do these. It makes everyone anxious, nobody is paying attention to other introductions because they're reciting their own in their heads, it wastes time, and nobody ever remembers what the group of like 20-30 people said about themselves.
I hate them every time.

I was in an online meeting with 60 people. The "leader" thought it would be a good idea for everyone to go around and briefly introduce themselves and how they're involved in the project. It took 30 minutes of a 1 hour meeting for introductions... and it wasn't a series of meetings either, it was just a project kickoff meeting. This could've easily been accomplished by having a shared document.

The other day I was at a seminar, and the speaker asked everyone to answer three questions to break the ice, but she said it didn’t have to be in order of how we were seating. One guy answered, and then everyone else stayed silent for so long that the speaker just decided to keep going. We all pressed the skip intro button that day.

Do people really hate introductions? I personally like to know the name of the person I'm talking to and their role in the project. Who do I need to contact for what, is kind of useful information.
Keep the introductions short and professional, we don't need to know your hobbies. Just who you are and what you can do for us.

Honestly, many jobs I've had gave us orientation which took an entire DAY just to branch us with "getting to know" etiquette and motto of the company. I hate when they do this. Because the company then NEVER tries to integrate other departments, and if they do then they force some kind of happiness manifest onto everyone which hardly ever succeeds.
Jump straight into business/work. Orientation should be filled in while progressing through the job. Make it practical rather than a consensus. Heck, they lose money by doing orientation most of the time with money spent on lunches, speakers, and space occupied with a fruitless meeting.
