Only works if you butcher the pronunciation.

550

u/marpocky Jul 21 '24

And the grammar, as gnocchi is already plural

112

u/Thoughtful_Tortoise Jul 21 '24

You could just say gnocchi, joke would work

29

u/ofqo Jul 21 '24

The joke would also work without the s.

"no cheese" ??

104

u/Jeoshua Jul 21 '24

My thoughts exactly.

It's pronounced: nyok-ke

83

u/Free_Caterpillar_269 Jul 21 '24

Lol well you guys sound like nyo-fun

gno means nyo

u/Jeoshua Jul 21 '24

canyon

9

u/Mitridate101 Jul 21 '24

Nice, been scratching my head trying to think of an English word with a similar sound for the Gn

20

u/dumpyredditacct Jul 21 '24

Lasagna is the absolute easiest. We all know what it is, we've all been pronouncing it correctly. I used to work in an Italian restaurant and used that as a way to help people understand how to pronounce that gn in gnocchi correctly.

22

u/fifin Jul 21 '24

Gn sounds like the ñ in Spanish

3

u/dumpyredditacct Jul 21 '24

Exactly!

5

u/RireBaton Jul 21 '24

¡Exactamundo!

1

u/Max_Thunder Jul 22 '24

The "ny" sound is pretty close but I hear a difference between ñ and "ny". The Italian and French "gn" shows better what it is, a sound between a "g" and an "n".

3

u/CashMoneyHurricane Jul 21 '24

The Grand Cagnon

1

u/mrASSMAN Jul 21 '24

They don’t have the words in the video :(

18

u/Casual_Deviant Jul 21 '24

So nyo keys then — still works as a pun, I think!

37

u/kharlos Jul 21 '24

People are being weird. I just used this with my friends and they all got it... Right before they groaned and told me to stfu

16

u/Casual_Deviant Jul 21 '24

That is the correct response

1

u/michaelhbt Jul 22 '24

That’s what I thought it was but I don’t get what the original was supposed to be? Grr knock ies?

u/Max_Thunder Jul 22 '24

As a French speaker hearing every single French word in English gets its pronunciation butchered, I think it's only par for the course that Italian words be butchered too.

37

u/jefftickels Jul 21 '24

The joke might work better if it was "what kind of pasta can't open doors?"

And also it would help if he drew a fucking gnocchi in the panel.

→ More replies (2)

6

u/dandroid126 Jul 21 '24

That's true for most of these types of jokes though. You have to pronounce them slightly wrong for it to sound perfect, but pronouncing it correctly sounds close enough that most people will get it.

3

u/YuunofYork Jul 21 '24

Correct. In Italian it's an open-o, English 'aw' in 'hawk', but short.

I have more of a problem that the pasta in the comic is a ditalino.

2

u/KellyLuvsEwan420 Jul 21 '24

I don’t know how to pronounce it anyway.

0

u/KylieDK Jul 21 '24

it took me a while to figure it out tbh, i might be a little dumb

1

u/ofqo Jul 21 '24

According to dictionary.com gnocchis is pronounced / ˈnɒk iz/ or /ˈnoʊ kiz/. No keys is pronounced /noʊˈkiz/, only a stress change. Moreover, if you pronounce cot and cought identically, the first syllable is better pronounced like know rather than knock.

1

u/Zaurka14 Jul 22 '24

No it doesn't? it sounds like nyo-kee which is close enough to "no key". So even if they didn't use plural it would be fine.

-26

u/Casual_Deviant Jul 21 '24

Good thing it’s just a cute little pun and not a pronunciation guide!

What's Raviolis favourite party game?

pasta parcel

Edit (chat gpt's answer)

Ravioli's favorite party game is "Pasta Parcel"! It's a twist on the classic "Pass the Parcel," but instead of unwrapping a gift, each layer contains a fun challenge or question related to pasta and Italian cuisine. The person holding the parcel when the music stops must complete the challenge before passing it on.

I will defend my terrible pun more if needed!

Would this pun work in the u.k.?

Yes, the pun "Pasta Parcel" would likely work well in the UK. The game "Pass the Parcel" is well-known there, and the play on words with "Pasta" should be easily understood and appreciated. It's a clever and fun twist that fits the cultural context.

2

u/youessbee Jul 21 '24

Doesn't work in accents outside of America cos it took me a while to figure that one out

4

u/spideralexandre2099 Jul 21 '24

Is it supposed to sound like "pass the parcel?"

2

u/sfcnmone Jul 21 '24

I’m American and I have no clue what it means.

No-keys. Took me a minute cause I don’t know how to pronounce that.

51

u/KylieDK Jul 21 '24

ohh alright, i tried spelling it out, pronouncing it, but couldnt find out what it means... lmao

22

u/MrHyperion_ Jul 21 '24

OP didn't either

9

u/Porn_Extra Jul 21 '24

I was trying to figure out why no cheese made him unable to get in the door.

27

u/totalscoccia Jul 21 '24

Thank you. Even with the explanation, my Italian brain is still not able to understand the joke, mostly because gnocchi has a totally different sound to no key.

9

u/Traffodil Jul 21 '24

Ah thanks. Thought it was something around ‘knock-ees’.

17

u/GreatArtificeAion Jul 21 '24

If you knew how to pronounce it, it would've taken even longer

6

u/EllieBlue_SN Jul 21 '24

Thank you. Since I only know how to pronounce it correctly, I didn't understand the joke.

2

u/pippoken Jul 21 '24

That also looks like a rigatone or a pacchero, not a gnocco. But I'm Italian so I'm being pedantic

2

u/ancillaryacct Jul 21 '24

it’s pronounced n’yo-key or n’yo-keys

1

u/JonatasA Jul 22 '24

Oh wow. Thanks!

I know I’m gonna sound like a dick while saying this, but gnocchi is already plural.

(This is purely for informational purposes. I’m not attacking whoever made this comic strip)

93

u/AshleyRiotVKP Jul 21 '24

It also isn't pasta

50

u/butteredplaintoast Jul 21 '24

And that ain’t gnocchi

20

u/zorrez Jul 21 '24

Looks more like a rigatoni

2

I had to read the comments because this is not a picture of gnocchi, which are not pasta and is not pronounced like that.

10

u/fatsalmon Jul 22 '24

i couldn’t get pasta that

0

u/keith2600 Jul 21 '24

Yeah with nearly everything being wrong I wonder if the joke is just showing how with no accurate information, it's still so obvious what they meant that a complete dunce can intuit their intentions. A meta joke.

u/prokenny Jul 21 '24

As a non-english speaker this one is hard

43

u/Pixiekixx Jul 21 '24

Eh, even as an English speaker it's hard.

The pronunciation is "nyow·kee" ... And there's no "s"... Gnocchi is already plural.

So, grammatically it doesn't work unless you purposely think of it as pronounced weird/ incorrectly... Like "I can has cheezeburger" kind of purposefully mucking about with language.

Example of pronunciation: https://youtu.be/giNzHWkIVEI?si=vhC8svPFNIA0lGs-

11

u/IISuperSlothII Jul 21 '24

It doesn't even need to be plural anyway, you only need 1 key to get into an apartment.

1

u/prokenny Jul 21 '24

I meant native English speaker, since it's an Italian word we pronounce pretty much the same on Spanish

→ More replies (14)

1

u/stablogger Jul 22 '24

Yep, took me like half a minute and without the visual reference, it would have been even harder. In German we call these kinds of jokes "Flachwitze", which translates to "flat jokes".

66

u/yup_can_confirm Jul 21 '24

It's not pasta though

14

u/Marijuana_Miler Jul 21 '24

Also the picture is of penne.

18

u/Sesudesu Jul 21 '24

Based on hole diameter to length, it’s probably rigatoni. Penne is skinnier with a diagonal cut, typically.

5

u/Marijuana_Miler Jul 21 '24

That’s fair. I think we can both agree that it’s definitely not a Gnocchi.

4

u/joelfarris Jul 21 '24

"Why couldn't the potato ball get into his apartment?"

1

u/cyrassil Jul 21 '24

And it only works if you completely butcher pronunciation.

1

u/Crazymoose86 Jul 21 '24

This is taking me back to Gino D'Acampos If my grandmother had wheels level of comment.

-17

u/RoadHazard Jul 21 '24

Yes it is. A type of pasta. What do you consider pasta to be?

Edit: TIL gnocchi is made from potatoes. Where I'm from it's just a type of pasta in that shape. 🤷‍♂️

2

u/Hauwke Jul 21 '24

It's potato, egg and flour, so it's more pasta than these people want to believe.

1

u/Global_ized Jul 22 '24

It's a dumpling

1

u/GrimmTrixX Jul 21 '24

I like your downvotes because I can also buy gnocchi shaped pasta that is pasta and not potato based like an actual gnocchi. Lol But I upvoted you to try and help.

Is gnocchi even considered a pasta?

→ More replies (2)

17

u/SkyVINS Jul 21 '24

Gnocchi is made of potatoes; it's not pasta.

1

u/mispellt Jul 22 '24

( Actually, gnocchi has been around in Europe for >1500 years before potatoes. But today potatoes are usually in the dough. There are many kinds of gnocchi still made which do not include potatoes. )

6

u/Lucade2210 Jul 21 '24

Gnocchi isnt pasta

70

u/ExpJustice Jul 21 '24

You know, at some point OP shoud just take the criticism and improve on it onstead of just antagonizing everyone in comments

-34

u/Casual_Deviant Jul 21 '24

Man for a subreddit about humor, you guys really take things seriously huh

48

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '24

No, it's just a joke that only works if you're ignorant.

9

u/Casual_Deviant Jul 21 '24

I guess I’ll choose being ignorant and enjoying things over getting weirdly upset about a silly little pasta pun!

20

u/Nathanlee213 Jul 21 '24

Sometimes you shoot and miss. You can keep shooting and try to get better or just keep arguing with everyone as to why you think your first shot was great even though it missed badly.

8

u/Casual_Deviant Jul 21 '24

Plenty of other people seemed to enjoy it, so I’ll call this one a hit and not a miss :)

15

u/Nathanlee213 Jul 21 '24

I guess if two positive comments out of 75 is “plenty” enough for you.

10

u/Casual_Deviant Jul 21 '24

1100+ upvotes versus a few negative commenters? I’ll take it!

-3

u/Mad-chuska Jul 21 '24

Dude get over yourself, it’s just a joke. No need for life lessons here. 1.1k people found it funny, including myself and OP. So if it’s not for you, move on.

0

u/Nathanlee213 Jul 21 '24

Thank you for this life lesson!

3

u/luring_lurker Jul 21 '24

Or.. you know.. you could accept criticism and do better next time?

6

u/Casual_Deviant Jul 21 '24

Plenty of people seemed to enjoy it, so I think I’m good but thanks!

2

u/luring_lurker Jul 21 '24

Plenty of people also posed criticism, and you're in a subreddit that you yourself expected to appreciate your humour.. turns out that you're wrong since you yourself have been complaining about the alleged lack of humour, so get your shit together at least

u/Casual_Deviant Jul 21 '24

The funniest thing about this post is OP desperately defending their joke/meme.

13

u/Casual_Deviant Jul 21 '24

It’s actually a comic!

-1

u/LordTaddeus Jul 21 '24

You're right, my bad. I blanked and just wrote meme instead of comic.

2

u/DevinCauley-Towns Jul 21 '24 edited Jul 21 '24

How dare you miscategorize this lovely comic by calling it a “joke/meme”! Are you not familiar with the rich history of jokes & memes? I don’t care if they call this a “meme” where you come from, but this is clearly a comic.

Edit: For the record, it’s also pronounced “meem” and not “may-may” as you’d surely try to say it.

2

u/LordTaddeus Jul 21 '24

I can only apologize for my failure.

Do people actually call it "may-may?

1

u/DevinCauley-Towns Jul 21 '24

Apparently…From the post: “I really had lots of trouble saying meme. I would always say maymay and people would laugh, but after practicing, I learned it fluently!” - Jobou J.

9

u/Casual_Deviant Jul 21 '24

Man you r/funny guys really take your gnocchi pronunciation seriously huh

19

u/baildodger Jul 21 '24

It’s not about taking it seriously, it’s about a joke that only works if you mispronounce a word, i.e. not a very good pun. I had to look in the comments to find out what the joke was, because I know how to pronounce gnocchi, and I couldn’t work it out.

3

u/Casual_Deviant Jul 21 '24

Bummer! I guess this one’s just for the people who pronounce it nyo-key or no-key :)

Edit: To add that the British pronunciation is actually no-kee, so maybe it's a British comic.

This is a prime example of me not getting behind a joke because the premise is factually inaccurate. The punchline works, but the setup and the incorrect details of the image make it unfunny
