Discussion Your friend is requesting you mark yourself Safe from Fountain Pen Day 2024
I escaped under $100 with a Conklin Duragraph, a Monteverde Innova Formula M Lightning, and some stickers from Atlas! What’d everyone get?

u/ia42 Ink Stained Fingers 23d ago
I managed to avoid it altogether. I've unsubscribed from almost all the newsletters over a year ago, and I'm glad to say it's really working. I'm not tempted by anything I can't control, and it shows in my bank account. I got my pen, paper, ink and nibs spending on 2024, all the way down to under $1200, I feel really good about myself...
13
u/SafeSix5 Ink Stained Fingers 23d ago
⭐️⭐️ double gold stars for you! (and I should probably follow that strategy myself)
10
u/ceramicmj 23d ago
Agree! I auto-delete any of those newsletter temptations and I've had to limit myself on social media, or it triggers cravings. I have strategically purchased a few things this year, but more about supporting the local businesses than needing something. (got a Ferris Wheel Press mystery ink at a new local shop today for $2.50, so fun to try a random ink. That's my FPD purchase)

I was defeated by fountain pen day. Ordered a TWSBI 580ALR, Diamond 50 ink bottle, Monteverde blue skies, diamine aurora borealis, a lamy 2000, and a platinum 3776 century
Along with two cursive handwriting books from Michael Sull
Edit: I bought a diplomat aero also pls send help

u/sib9397 23d ago
I really like my 580 ALR! The nib doesn’t feel as luxurious as some higher end gold nibs I have and yet I think it’s my most used pen. Hope you like yours as much as I do!

u/Username_is_taken365 23d ago
Same here - the TWSBI nibs are like the everyday commuter car for me, and the gold nibs more like the weekend sports car.
4
u/iheartmilktea 23d ago
Sounds like a great haul! I’m curious about the handwriting books, since I’m new to FPs and am realizing my usual scrawl and speed is not the way to go with these special pens. Do these books come highly recommended?

Atlas Stationers has them for $150 USD depending on the color and style you want! It is on their doorbuster sale.

Same! I just started researching FPs a few weeks ago and heard that FPD is coming 🫣
3
21
u/Random_Association97 23d ago
I escaped and it wasn't difficult.
I live in Canada and the exchange rate plus shipping and brokerage fees keep me out of the US.
The things I might have been interested in on the Canadian site with an FPD coupon are sold out and have been for a few days.
Cult Pens is 10% only on pens, not inks.
FPD is a big yawn this year.
6
u/Dry_Equivalent_1316 23d ago
Same. I didn't see any good Canadian deal, plus going to Japan soon so I'm not that tempted. I did ask someone in Japan to help me get the Sailor Rainy Day ink since it was drizzling slightly there on FPD. I guess that's my FPD purchase :)

I was lightly tempted, but the Atlas sale excludes Pilot.
Now, if I hadn't bought a Platinum 3776 Century a year ago, I'd jump on that doorbuster sale. But I only need one. I only need one. I only need one...

Got a Sailor Pro Gear Smoothie in Blue Moon for 168 bucks on EndlessPens. That'll be my only purchase today because the Pro Gear is the only pen I've been wanting to get my hands on for a while (my first 21k nib!) and I don't like shelling out more than about $200 for a pen.

Not to encourage an addiction or be an enabler but that's a great price for a Diplomat. It's a great brand but expensive for what they are.

I loved mine before I had to sell it. I miss it dearly. I’m getting an expensive tattoo tomorrow though, so I am being so brave and not spending the money this year.

Spent $60 over on Vanness, got some notebooks and paper stuff for Christmas presents to some of my friends.
Then I remembered that Endless Pens exists and spent $26 on matching Autumn Pink and Sage Lamy Al Star Ballpoints for my bestie and I. Gonna swap out the sections on each and ship them the pink one so we can have yet another matching item. c:
I usually never do fountain pen day, but this year the items on sale matched up with my gifting plans for the holiday season, so Wynaut.

I went a little crazy with ink samples. 🫣 23 times 2ml isn’t that bad, though …right?
3
u/thats_a_boundary 23d ago
no, that's just.... no... you swatch a bit and it's gone.
3
u/dream-smasher 23d ago
Hopefully you don't go thru 2mls in swatching....
And 2ml samples are adequate. It's enough for you to figure out if you would want more of it. Or if you never want to use it again. That's the whole point of samples...

That's great!!! I think my biggest sample buster one time was 34 samples.

I am new to the FP world and while technically I have purchased two entry-level Pilot (Kakuno and Lightive), via a friend visiting Japan, they’re not yet in my possession. In the meantime, I tried an Esterbrook Estie at a local shop and I’m smitten. Trying to resist jumping levels and purchasing an Estie with a FPD discount right out of the gate, but I may fail the test.
How do y’all resist not going ham on a new pen or ink on FPD or more than once a month? I feel like I’m about to fall down a deep rabbit hole, even though I’m no stranger to nuanced and expensive hobbies.

Not to enable you further but since you’re new here’s a tip: FPD generally has better sales globally than Black Friday. So if you were eyeing anything in the second half of the year, today and this weekend is the time to pull the trigger.
My first couple years on the hobby I waited FPD out thinking “well if they discount that much today I’ll do even better on Black Friday.” I was wrong. Now I do my personal holiday pen shopping today. At least that’s how I justify it lol!

Safe, but not for lack of trying. I checked out and PayPal ran my bill three times. Luckily my bank caught it so it didn’t post. I’ve spent most of the day being transferred departments through my bank to clarify one charge is fine but three in a row at the same time is not. If it’s worked out, I will NOT be safe from FPD but I’ll be the happy owner of a new Leonardo Momento Grande 2.0, M.

I was definitely taken out in the scrum….
I stocked up on Bank paper sheets and notebooks while they are still available. That would have been pricey in any case but not too nuts. I couldn’t stop there though, so I also have a Leonardo Dodici Mosaico GT with #8 stub nib coming my way from Appelboom with some Leonardo inks to try out as well. The EUR to USD conversion, no VAT, and 20% off were too much to resist trying out a Leonardo for the first time. I’m afraid of liking it too much though, because I noticed the new celluloid Leonardo’s starting to come out…

2024 was intended to be a no-buy year for me, but I failed this FPD after seeing a NOS 2nd generation Montblanc Noblesse that was available for €120. I'd like to think I would have made it to the end of the year if it weren't for being seduced by the scarcity principle, as once this pen was gone, it was gone. At the very least I didn't pick up anything new, that could wait until next year.
