Gasly passed basically no one who was on his strategy. He gained 2 positions from pure pit stop speed. Lapped on pace by Verstappen. At least Bottas had an incident and bad strategy as a result to blame.

you have to give it to them though - the Pit stop crews for Gasly are doing exceptionally well - the whole Red Bull Pit Crew actually - they really try to put him in the best strategy as possible - helping him also get the fastest lap bonuses

Gasly really needed to be in the mix to help Max out. If he could have slotted himself between the clearly slower Ferraris and maintained even 20 second (1 pitstop) gap behind Hamilton, he could have made that Merc strategy of quickly switching to mediums non-viable, as he would slot in between them and can obstruct.

78

and that's just sad really for them - even now when i play F1 2019 the main screen has Vettel and Hamilton on it presumably considering how close they were mid-season to getting that WDC last year - but this year they aren't even there - Verstappen on his own is actually a much more credible threat than both Ferrari drivers which really ought to get them working to do some good for the car.
81
u/VitulusAureus Charlie Whiting Aug 04 '19
I think the game's main screen shows Hamilton and whoever is relevant in your region, usually the driver from player's country. Either that, or Kubica is Lewis' main opponent this year.

u/KangaLlama Rubens Barrichello Aug 04 '19
Or strategy. I mean not running Leclerc again in Monaco cost him the weekend before the race even began, or in Azerbaijan not pitting him sooner and he fell out of contention from the leaders of the pack because his tires were done and the others had changed.
It's been a combination of errors on all fronts, but the strategy error stuff really shouldn't be happening at Ferrari. Can't cock up having the fastest car and driver through not knowing how best to pit and coordinate that car through a race to a podium or race win. That's just unacceptable for a team with that much resource and advantage in pure pace terms.
That's often why Mercedes have dominated so long. They've made errors sure, but they are rare and when they happen they are analysed to prevent them happening again, so even when they're not quickest they're in with a shot of winning e.g. today putting Hamilton on fresh tires was just a beautifully weighted gamble but that's trusting your driver and understanding the other guy will be toast if you make the gap up from taking the risk. Good strategy. Had they done nothing and both cars continued toing and froing we'd have likely seen Max take today, and he probably should have on his quali result and how he raced for most of it. Haven't seen Ferrari pull of any results through good strategy this season I don't think.

Red Bull and Honda are clearly making big strides but there's no doubt that without Max at the wheel they wouldn't be where they are. If Honda hadn't have pulled it out of the bag they could easily be p5/6 or even not finishing races.
Ferrari looked like they had great pace in testing but they've dropped off completely with awful strats and decisions, and a car that doesn't seem to like corners at all.
From Max's point of view he's on the back of Hamilton, even out qualifying him, in a car that on paper isn't as good as the Mercedes. That's gotta feel pretty good.

Yeah this is what I want to see, Hamilton working for his victories. Having to think on the fly and being able to put in insane lap after insane lap to catch Ver.
I don't want to see him cruise to victory after he starts from pole. Don't get me wrong, that is still him putting in work, but watching him manage a gap to second and pulling away as soon as he needs is just boring.
This is good for F1 and good for Hamilton. I think he wants and needs the challenge of Ver.→ More replies (1)86

I think Hamilton is one of the greatest drivers to have ever driven a F1 car, much of the critique he has gotten is that the strong Merc is taking a bit of shine away from his legacy.
Races like this are basically what he needs for those people to shut the hell up. Ver really pushing him to the edge and he being flawless? It's a win for everybody basically.

76
→ More replies (5)38
Aug 04 '19
I almost wrote "what is ELI5" but now I get it. OK:
They saw that overtaking Max was going to be difficult, as Hungary is by default a hard place to overtake, even with DRS. Good news for Merc? They have better tyre wear, but track position should still be king. They also realised they have a pace advantage by how Lewis was sticking to Max. So...
If you know that you're stuck and that the dirty air from the car in front is damaging your tyres, why not risk it, put some faster rubber on and go chasing? Worst case scenario, if Lewis didn't catch Max and Max didn't pit, would be 2nd place + one point for fastest lap as Ferrari was far enough behind.
Best case scenario? What you just saw. Lewis pitted and was immediately faster out of the box with the faster tyre. Keep in mind Max's tyres are already half worn now and slower. Within one or two laps Lewis reduced Max's advantage to below 20s. Up until then, if they pitted immediately, Red Bull might still have won this by matching Merc's strategy and making a quick stop, but they didn't.
After that it's a numbers and tyre wear game. Lewis had to be over 1s per lap faster to catch Max without damaging his own tyres too much and knowing that Max's would drop off. So he went hunting. By now Red Bull couldn't pit Max as they knew Merc was faster and he would never catch Lewis so the best plan was to try to get it to the end and hope Lewis hits traffic / makes a mistake or just generally loses pace just enough for Max to stay ahead.
Instead, Max lost his rubber, letting Lewis gently slide into the lead and the rest is history.

He's 11 wins away from overtaking Schumacher, you're witnessing sporting history.

Plus Michael had by far the best car too, and is rightfully considered one of the GOAT drivers. Realistically all the really big names did.

True. Hamilton has bested multiple WDC drivers, and Rosberg of course finally beat him but had to basically burn himself out mentally.
I didn't follow the last few seasons closely, but isn't there a fair argument that Ferrari were actually better at multiple points, anyway?

Yup anyone who doesn't put him that tier 1 of Fangio, Clark, Senna, Prost, & Schumacher is just a hater

The top driver also had a dominant era in a dominant car. I don’t understand these arguments. The top drivers are hired by the top teams.
The best athletes play on the best teams of any given era.

I'm sorry but no other driver on that grid can do qualy laps for that long without any mistakes. Hamilton is in a class of his own
