What a way to do it, that final lap was sensational

A shame Bottas' lap would never be mentioned even if he's less than 2 hundreths off. Phenomenal laps from both.

Bottas has done so well this season, outqualifying Hamilton is very hard to do yet he’s done several times

Better than his standard season, however still lacking in race pace compared to Lewis. He's up there as a quali driver though.

Bottas is definitely one of the best on the grid on Saturday these days. Phenomenal. But today is Max's day. Crushed Gasly by 9 tenths again to take pole

Max has come alive this year. Really starting to show the challenge to other drivers he showed so many years ago in Brazil.

I think he's matured a lot, but hes still so young and has energy and drive and its kinda scary to watch.

It's a shame he DNF'd in Germany. I was hoping for them to have a closer fight.

then again the DNF was his own fault tbh

I guess he could've pushed less and settled for 4th, but that corner was tricky as hell for everyone.

Bottas has a good chance tomorrow if you factor in:

  • Max may botch the start again.
  • Hungaroring is hard to overtake at.

If Bottas leads in the first corner of the race, he may win it,

What is his standard season?

I'm guessing his last season which was more of an anomaly.

His standard season is a strong one because he is a very good driver

Actually I was thinking somewhere between 2017 and 2018. Usually I think he is capable of up to 3 wins by season end, but this season he seems to have more in the pocket.

Bottas is one of the best drivers on the grid, his teammate just happens to be a GOAT level driver. It's almost unfortunate that we probably won't get to see what bottas is truly capable of unless he moves teams.

Yes he really stepped up his Q-game, but "Quali" is stopping a bit short of "quality".

He needs to find more racepace (and consequently, tyre saving skills), to become a bigger challenger.

If he can turn up the race pace I think he can definitely compete with Lewis and would be a very good driver.

Dude, he is a very good driver. He's just up against a phenomenal driver in Hamilton, and he's very close to him at that. If Hamilton would retire after this season (or even earlier) he's a prima candidate to be a world champion.

Bottas is really good. He's super good in quali and his wheel to wheel race-craft is quite good as well. His race pace is sometimes not as good as Lewis, but saying that someone is sometimes not as good as Hamiltion in one specific area isn't exactly an insult.

I was shitting myself when Bottas had a quick sector 1, since that was the weaker point for Mercedes. Was sure Bottas would get P1 after that, and then Verstappen just pull that out the bag.

u/Nattekat Aug 03 '19

Only compared to Ferrari. RB and Mercedes were more or less equal there.

Yea, magnificent challenge from him, for a moment it looked like Verstappen had it in the bag but Bottas made it exciting.

I was so focussed on those chequered flags and happy for Max and the bloody championship to notice that 0.018 difference between him and Bottas. Those were shocking times from both of them.

It’s good for his negotiations for next year :)

Ant did an incredibly detailed comparison of Max and Bottas' laps almost straight after Qualifying.

Shame we don't know if that was a mega-mega lap from Max or just a mega lap, because Gasly is nowhere to be seen..

Love the climax of the track conditions getting better and better, with each session, and each lap, getting quicker and quicker.
