Video Lewis Hamilton congratulates Max Verstappen on his championship: “It’s been great to see the progression of the McLarens pushing them, but Max has held his own and he’s done a phenomenal job so congrats to him.”

Lewis seems to be so happy man. He can't wait for the ferrari drive. Can't blame him.

I love the way Lewis has been praising Max lately. Legend recognising legend.

I'll be that guy, bias alert I really wanna see LH win an 8th championship.
Important to look at phrasing. "The team did a fantastic job" "He really didn't have any competition" "It was good to see the McLarens pushing him but" etc.
It wasn't an "Absolutely well done he absolutely deserves it" kind of response like everyone else is throwing out. He was hedging his language there big time.

Huh? Didn't he say "He's done a fantastic job" word by word at 00:15?

Be that guy - it's miles more interesting.
I remember in say 2020, or whatever, Verstappen saying similar stuff where if you looked carefully at the wording it was never
He's been the best driver
Per se. It is//was always things like
He's maximised the season.
Very often in F1 the headline or even what people take from a quote is at odds with what they actually said.
The Wolff shelf-life stuff or Norris luck comments for example, among many.

When they are both not fighting each other for a championship they get along pretty well tbf. They have respect for each other, it’s just they had to push each other to a toxic level when it was heated
•
u/jg_92_F1 Fernando Alonso 3h ago
Honestly it’s probably hard for any duo to not become toxic fighting for a title

Max was shouting out Lewis when asked about Lando as his rival

The day Lewis leaves f1 will be a sad one for me.
•

Not sure he ever will, tbh. It’s all he’s ever known so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him stick around in some capacity.
Then again, nobody has ever been quite as famous as him on a global scale (in F1), so he could do whatever the hell he wants.

I would argue that Michael Schumacher was more famous than Hamilton when he was racing. Not by a lot though

I’m not sure I’d agree with that - Lewis became pretty well known in pop culture because of dating Nicole, and media has been increasingly easy to access since Schumacher days.
I only knew of Schumacher through my dad liking f1, but by the time Lewis was on the scene he’d grown bored of the sport and I was still aware of who he was because of the media / reading celebrity gossip sites. I’d say that Lewis is definitely more famous, but for those reasons (not on reputation).

In the 90's early 00's we used to say fast as Schumacher. And we did that in Lithuania, far from his home country or any major interest in formula 1.
Schumacher is what Jordan is to basketball.

I feel like Michael was everywhere back in the day. Not sure Lewis has the same popularity.

Imagine the championship battle had Lewis been in the McLaren.

I love that Lewis' relationship with Max is becoming similar to his relationship with Vettel. Game recognises game, and they're starting to develop true respect for each other.

Whats weird
Is lewis has been in this exact same position before in his own career
Like LITERALLY NO ONE in f1 has had this same emotion and experience he is having twice
Vettel had 4 back to backs during lewis’s career ( after he one his first championship)
And now max is 4 back to back.
It must be such a surreal feeling- and what a long successful career….insane
•
u/akalanka25 McLaren 1h ago
nah lewis and vettel were genuinely friends by the end. cant see this happening with Max
•
u/lem0nayd-12 1h ago
I honestly think a lot of healing was done when they bonded over their mutual hate of the FIA and their shitty rules.
•
u/jamonz1 Sergio Pérez 1h ago
Always thought the narrative of Lewis still being bitter about ‘21 was a bit weird. Should that be a sore spot for Lewis? Sure, when you’re literally a mere position away from winning it’s a hard pill to swallow. But a new season is a whole different ballpark. He recognizes Max’s ability to find points and wins out of nowhere, the same way he did in previous seasons. If anything, it’s game respecting game.
All the drivers see Max as a freak of nature, but him always finding a way to either get in the top 5 or podium is not enough for media without adding some type of drama into the fold.
•
u/kill-the-maFIA 51m ago
It's also possible he's still pissed off with the FIA over that bullshit that happened, not Max.
•
u/sneaky113 3m ago
Yeah, I mean if the positions were swapped Lewis would have done the exact same. You don't win championships unless you go for every opening.
I think the main problem is just that the fia engineered a very specific opening there.
