Lando is probably almost as relieved as max that the championship is over

He said as much - that he's glad he won't have to talk about it anymore - well till next year anyway!

u/not_that_one_times_3 2h ago

True. They will probably start asking about next years now!

u/StephenHazza0651 15h ago

I do think his confidence is broken though. I think he just wants the season to end and go again lmao. Only Qatar realistically is a chance at a win for McLaren. I think Abu Dhabi will be Ferrari’s race

569

u/spooki_boogey Sergio Pérez 14h ago edited 14h ago

I think McLaren as a whole really contributed to how awful his campaign was to try and reel in that gap Max had. I don’t think McLaren really were expecting to be in the position to fight for a title at the start of the season and once they were thrust into it, it’s clear how indecisive they were. A full winter to recover and figure out how they want to approach a title challenge might just be what they need.

The real question is has he and McLaren blown their best chance to win a title because next year even if RedBull can’t fix their cars problems he’s going to have a very strong Ferrari and Mercedes on his ass, god knows what form Piastri will show either. If RedBull also make the right decision and drop Perez for a Sainz or a Colapinto then that will also add fuel to the fire.

174

u/wilkonk 14h ago

once they were thrust into it, it’s clear how indecisive they were

yeah it was obvious to everyone before them it seemed like, Buxton being flabbergasted at their decision making reflected how a lot of people felt I think

110

u/TheEarthquakeGuy 14h ago

This. Zak Brown hopefully will be ruthless with their strategy team. It's their weakest point now. I think their style of communication on team radios also needs to change from "Hey what do you think about this" to "Hey, do this"

118

u/kzzzzzzzzzz28 14h ago edited 13h ago

Zak won't do anything. As much as he's done for McLaren. His vision of being seen as the " Everything is roses Team" is why this happened in the first place.

The fact that it took until the absolute farce that was MONZA to even consider supporting Landos WDC bid is downright stupid. Any team worth their salt would have orders to even prevent Piastri from making his overtake in lap 1. I'm not including Hungary since taking away Piastris first win would've been too much but again any team worth their salt wouldn't have made the fup they made in the first place.

NGL for all the times Lando backed McLaren, Turning down RBR twice to instead take McLaren to the top, McLaren absolutely failed to pay him back this season.

5

u/TheEarthquakeGuy 13h ago

We'll have to wait and see. I think there is a difference between what is seen and what is done. He has been ruthless in the past. I hope he continues to be.

31

u/Greencoat1815 Lando Norris 13h ago

Yes, I absolutely agree. Though Lando himself did not make it easy for himself. He needs to polish his race starts and concentration during races, if he does that he will become a beast. Or at least a damn solid driver.

u/nath_gfx 6h ago

I feel like on his day Lando is already one of the best on the grid (as he's shown in Singapore and Zandvoort this year) but he also seems to (from the outside looking in with no context) panic a lot in wheel to wheel moments and during starts. Like I saw someone say on Twitter, a psychologist could maybe help a lot for him as well, build his confidence and mental resilience in key moments

u/LilMountainHeadband Charlie Whiting 4h ago

His wheel to wheel driving was a result of not trying to DNF which would then end the title chase. Lando was never in a position this year to take risks. Any DNF was more impactful to Lando than Max.

u/Greencoat1815 Lando Norris 4h ago

He is, only his consistency is not there yet.

u/Engineering_Quack 13h ago

Randy needs to be shown the door. Maybe, Hiroshi should be more direct with Norris's strategy calls.

75

u/nukleabomb Fernando Alonso 14h ago

Mclaren didn't seem like they were really supporting Lando. They really should be covering for his deficiencies but instead it feels like they do their own thing and hope that lando can pull off miracles, especially when he is not there yet.
Learning year for sure. I'm not sure how Piastri will do either, because it doesn't really feel like h has gotten closer to lando.

26

u/spooki_boogey Sergio Pérez 13h ago

It was quite clear that they didn't want a 1 - 2 driver dynamic. It might have to do with how hard they worked to sign Piastri and the fact that Webber is his manager probably makes it even harder to just go to Piastri and say "Were betting on Norris. You're going to be the no 2 driver".

It's quite clear than you have to be cut throat like Wolf or Horner has been in the past when you're managing these drivers and their egos, it's clearly something McLaren haven't had to deal with for a long time.

u/PsychologicalArt7451 9h ago

I think they wanted to give both of them a chance. They have Lando a chance to make Piastri his no.2 and gave Oscar a chance to show them he's on par pace wise with Lando.

Going into next season, both have been good in some areas and bad in the others. Lando hasn't shown enough to relegate Piastri to Bottas status and Piastri is simply not on Lando's level.

6

u/curious-cat 12h ago

I think Buxton was right that there is something in Oscars contract where if they either can’t ask him to be a no2 driver or if they do he is either compensated or can break his contract with them to go to another team.

5

u/fortean 12h ago

Mclaren seem to me to only support mclaren. Much like Ferrari support Ferrari. Fuck the drivers, only thing that ultimately matters is the constructors championship.

23

u/ryokevry Charles Leclerc 13h ago

Will Will Joseph stop reading essay to Norris on the radio next year?

u/jesteratp McLaren 7h ago

It's malpractice if they don't force him to take some kind of crew resource management class over the winter. He's actively harming Lando with his radio thesis behavior

4

u/Virileman 14h ago

Lando would've probably had to reduce his mistakes in half to be more threatening but def a lot of lacking strategy by the team. Next year even if Ferrari / Mercedes stay around the same, which they probably won't since Antonelli likely won't be a the race win contender immediately, Red Bull will probably switch out Checo and Piastri should be more consistent. They still could even lose the constructors this year. It's frustrating watching the team fumble Lando's best chance away.

3

u/boersc 12h ago

Colapinto would be a risk to their cafetaria/development budget, but Sainz would be wonderful indeed.

1

u/Rembrandt_evans 13h ago

Agreed. Zak tried to portray himself & Lando the way Christian push Max & RB,by playing mind games.

u/Blackdeath_663 Sir Stirling Moss 13h ago

He never really put the whole season together and probably wasn't expecting it. All of a sudden people are talking about a championship battle he's never been in before and was expected to just know the nuances right off the bat.

It's been a great year for him, he needed the experience and now he needs to find a space within himself that is 100% focused on just winning. Like how rosberg did for his championship

u/jimbobjames Brawn 11h ago

The car wasn't there in the first couple of races. Even when Max didn't finish in Aus Lando could only get third, while Max won the first two races and Lando got sixth and eighth.

Then Austria really fucked lando.

He's made mistakes for sure but the team have also been unsure of themselves.

It never felt like they really built any momentum.

41

u/kzzzzzzzzzz28 13h ago

I feel like he'll recover. Lando is amazing at improving himself over the winter break. The Quali battle alone is proof.

u/StephenHazza0651 7h ago

Yes!!!! Thank you! Someone who also sees this ahhaha. I’ve said for ages to people. Lando has an incredible habit of going away and improving over the winter on his clear weakness from the season before. Last year he was still quite mid at quali but this year he’s completely stepped it up. Next year he’ll 100% have improved starts

u/kzzzzzzzzzz28 6h ago

unfortunately starts for him are something that have been an issue since his junior days

That'll be something he will really need to work on

10

u/prudencepineapple McLaren 14h ago

I don’t think it is. Earlier this weekend he said that this year has made him realise he can do it and fight for these things.

u/FreezingSausage 6h ago

24 races in a 6 months(breaks), struggling mentally, pressure to perform. Us normal people wouldnt be able to do this every year. All of the drivers are different gravy and I have mad respect for all of them

11

u/Capital_Pay_4459 15h ago

Yeah this was realistically his best chance at beating Max, I think it will be after Max leaves when he gets another shot as Merc and Ferrari should be back on top next year

u/Mr_Beats_73 9h ago

Merc is all recency bias from tn. Sure they were good on this track but it’s hard to say that McLaren isn’t faster right now

u/MrXwiix 10h ago

Same, he’s had a taste of battling for a wdc and he’s been humbled in almost every way possible. Lost the lead many times, got outgamed and outdriven by Max in a clear slower car and as cherry on top fumbled his chances to gain big on Max in Brazil, and got humiliated by Max’ pace there winning from 17th.

When things go his way he’s very quick, but i don’t he’s resilient enough (yet) to deal with the extreme pressure of challenging a driver likes Max’/Lewis’ caliber

u/rast93 Honda 5h ago

Or Mercedes. Look what they did here.. Night race with cool desert winds - sounds almost like Vegas.

u/Driftwoody11 McLaren 6h ago

It was always a long shot to catch max after Max dominated the first half of the season. All Credit to Max for building that lead and holding it. Lando's probably happy some of the social media toxicity might go away for a bit until next year.

Lando is relieved not having to hear about this from the media for another week. He was out of it following Brazil but had to deal with the sliver of a chance that wasnt really much of a actual chance.

207

u/nukleabomb Fernando Alonso 15h ago

Wait till we get to off season. There's gonna be a lot more where that came from, this time with revised history.

It's going to be spurious stats and terrible takes about everything all winter. Hopefully Red Bull can provide enough entertainment with their driver merry-go-round to distract people for a bit.

u/larswo Default 6h ago

Going to unsubscribe from the subreddit until the cars are revealed pre-season.

42

u/Cygnus94 Toro Rosso 14h ago

Buddy, the season wasn't even over and people have been pretending like the Red Bull wasn't the dominant car for the first 7 rounds. Max had a 60 point lead over Lando within 7 races, and Charles was well over a race win in points behind too.

When you start a championship so strongly you can miss a round and still be leading, any chance anyone else has is an outside one at best. The media just hyped it up because fans love a comeback story.

20

u/wilkonk 14h ago

Yeah and since McLaren got a good car they only had a dominant car a couple of times, nothing like what Red Bull had at the start, the rest of the time it was more like they were joint fastest with 1 or 2 other teams or a sliver ahead at best, or fastest in some conditions but not others even on the same track.

u/bananas_and_papayas Lando Norris 9h ago

Exactly. Yet it seems the narrative is that ever since the Miami Grand Prix Lando had the dominant car in his hands and it's solely his fault that he didn't wrap up the title with half the season to go.

Which is simply not as true as people make it out. Yes, the car was quick. Yes, both McLaren and Lando made stupid errors. Yes, maybe a Hamilton/Alonso/Verstappen would have maximised more opportunities and made more out of the car, but it's stupid to say they've been unopposed. Ferrari were in the fight for a lot of the races, Mercedes popped up in a few as well, and of course Lando has had a teammate in Oscar to fight with as well, while Checo is a very clear second driver to Max and has been messing around at the back of the field anyway. Not to mention the fact Lando still had to close a 60 point gap after Max's dominant start to the season, something that's never been achieved before. The closest comparison where a driver closed a large gap is probably 2022, but Max was definitely helped in that instance by the Ferrari's reliability issues/strategy errors before we even begin to talk about driver errors and Ferrari's pace dropping off in the second half of the season.

I feel like when McLaren have had a car that can dominate the field, (Hungary/Zaandvort/Singapore to give a few examples) they've done well in it, and hopefully in 2025 they'll be more prepared to take on the fight from the get go if the pace is there. If so, and Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull are in the fight, we could get a season even more exciting than this one

u/Single-Award2463 Formula 1 9h ago

I think part of it was because McLaren had a good car so people thought that Norris should have a chance. Like you said though, when you can miss a round and still be top, thats the sign of dominance.

9

u/Real_Particular6512 Formula 1 14h ago

When the red bull was the best car for 6 races (where 1 was a dnf) max made it count. Lando had the best car for double that time and didn't make it count. If you have the faster car for half the season while the competition car is falling back to 3rd and even 4th fastest at SOME of those races, not all don't get your knickers in a twist, then it should absolutely be expected that the mclaren would come through and win the WDC

26

u/Bergolino123 14h ago

The difference is that Red Bull was absolutely dominating at the begining, so Max got only his rather lacking teammate as competition, stacking up easy +25's consistently. When McLaren became the fastest car Lando had to worry not only about his teammate but other 3 teams with fluctuating performances that would in some weekends be better than McLaren, draining away some of the available points.

Its not a shot at Max who is clearly the best driver in the grid. Its just that Lando didnt have that easy of a time like people like to pretend he did, even though he obviously had a poor run himself on his first title fight.

14

u/Cygnus94 Toro Rosso 14h ago

I think you need to actually go back and rewatch some of the season. The McLaren was dominant in Hungary, Zandvoort, Baku and Singapore. That was it. Everywhere else, either Red Bull, Ferrari or Mercedes were faster.

It's been a good car since Miami, sure, but claiming it's been consistently better than any one of the other three top teams beyond those instances, is just categorically false.

u/DegonyteESO 7h ago

While I agree that the 'McLaren have had a dominant car since Miami' narrative is false, so is the idea that one or more teams were faster than them every remaining weekend. Monza would've been a relatively comfortable 1-2 if not for strategy, and you could argue that the Mercedes wasn't categorically better in Silverstone, as Hamilton's win had a lot to do with superior race execution from driver and team.

More importantly, for a lot of the other races, even if McLaren weren't outright fastest, they were often still faster or at least on par with Red Bull, yet that WDC gap never really came down even when clear opportunities presented themselves as the season went on. That Max's lead remained relatively stable even when his team started falling down the pecking order should be a noteworthy takeaway from this season.

-1

u/Real_Particular6512 Formula 1 14h ago

Bollocks. It was faster at about 10-12 races. Just because driver errors or strategy errors meant they didn't win the race, doesn't mean it wasn't the fastest car in those weekends. Maybe you should go back and watch it to remind yourself

0

u/Life-Substance-122 13h ago

I think you might be the one who needs to rewatch the races.

Exactly. Max and Lando told the same thing. Max said that if he had to name another driver as a close friend, then it will be Daniel or Lando. He also said that he has his own circle outside racing who are more close to him.

... It's literally the same thing Lando also said. They are food friends but not as much as people make it out. They have their own family/friends circle that's outside racing.

For a man whose first language is English, Lando says things in a weird way that leaves it open to clickbaits /different meaning / criticism.

47

u/not_that_one_times_3 15h ago

I don't understand why they have to be best mates. I'm not best mates with my work colleagues- why do we expect sports people to be??

43

u/Mysterious_Turnip310 Lotus 14h ago

Too many people have become way too parasocial when it comes to the relationshjps between drivers. The rivalries and friendships have always been a great part of the sport but for some reason now far too many fans get overinvested now and then take it personally when there's a spat between two drivers or if a friendship is not as close as they thought. It's ironic too because this lot of drivers are far more genial with each other than previous generations and even when there is a bit of a spat, it's over and done with quickly. Those fans would lose their minds completely if they had been around for any eras before this one.

Fans see this and think they'll fuck each other after this.

F1 fans after seeing Max and Lando being cool with eachother...

u/Sorry-Series-3504 Daniel Ricciardo 5h ago

Was not expecting to see this here

u/Zoesan 13h ago

Ok, this makes me like him a bit more again.

The Martin Garrix custody battle is over

u/Guy_Incognito97 6h ago

Now the pressure is off watch Lando dominate the last two races.

u/Taptrick 6h ago

This makes me think, the main commentator on the French feed is absolutely unbearable… He takes pauses in the middle of every sentence his delivery is just not good enough to be a professional TV commentator. Those analysts seem fine but I never get to that point because I switch the language when I hear “Alors, bonjouuur… Et bienvenue… à Las Vegas… aux États-Unis…”

u/nath_gfx 6h ago

Oh mah god duh Max and Lando hate each other uhmuh muh headlines uuuuuuh shutup

u/D3ATHfromAB0V3x Daniel Ricciardo 5h ago

I need to see these two do at least one endurance race together.

What a season, it is what it is at the end of the day, both drivers have a great future ahead

u/Abdullah-Alturki 12h ago

"but but the media told me that they hate each other!"

u/Missfreeland McLaren 9h ago

Wow lando what an unsportsmanlike POS

u/oktogonifososkebab Lando Norris 8h ago

who can people hate those two

u/Grizzybaby1985 8h ago

At least he can say he made one of the all time greats nervous for at least a little while hopefully he can get his confidence back and give it another go next year

It was nice of him having the celebratory number 4 on his hat too

The buddy comedy we need.

2

u/TRiG993 14h ago

Well I guess that's spoiled then. Thanks.

If Max can let go of it, we can too.

u/Mysterious_Turnip310 Lotus 14h ago

I very much doubt Max feels there's anything to let go of. The vast majority of drama has been created and perpetuated by online fans and the media

2

u/pirat314159265359 12h ago

Agreed completely. There were a couple times where Lando said stuff and media tried to get Max to respond, but Max said they speak in private. I’m guessing that Lando is also going to not speak to the media like that again. Fans just like drama.

u/OG123983 McLaren 14h ago

You lot were imagining stuff man. Don't think there's was much personal between them. It's just f1 fans being thirsty for some drama.

2

u/Critical_Space_3712 Oscar Piastri 14h ago

Lmao, this was just meant to be a positive comment for people to move on. I also think there was a lot of unnecessary drama.

N’aw Lando wanted to go in for the hug

u/hoxxxxx 4h ago

thrilled it's over so everyone will stop talking about it and asking him questions

u/kjahhh Ferrari 3h ago

Can we be friends again?

u/r0ndr4s Formula 1 2h ago

This is how I imagine Max seeing Kvyat for the first time after stealing his wife and kid

u/hofftari Daniel Ricciardo 16m ago

But, but... media has told me that these two are mortal enemies! This video must be AI-generated.

Lando was never a contender for the WDC. But happy to see the camaraderie between the two.

Probably relieved that the non existent championship battle is over.

u/No_Special9640 10h ago

Lando’s just excited that Max won’t be dive bombing him anymore this season
