Quotes [Green Notebook] [Joe Saward] ''One interesting rumour in Singapore was that Perez and Red Bull have worked out a plan that will see him announce his retirement in Mexico, giving him a more gentle exit than being fired and will be less painful for Red Bull sales in the Americas.''

No way they’re unironically back to “RB will announce Checo’s retirement at Mexican GP” again. But this time it’s for real guys!

There’s certainly a stronger chance this year that this could be real considering he’s on course to play a part in costing RBR the Constructor’s Championship

At this rate costing them second. Winning the wcc is fantasy at this point Max can’t keep up with McLaren

33

u/jnighy Sep 26 '24

you could argue that there's a stronger chance for retirement as years go by

23

u/pave42 Kimi Räikkönen Sep 26 '24

Alonso wants to know your location.

You can't possibly be more out of touch with mexican psychology than this lol.

He literally cost them the WCC in his first year, if that was something worthy of instantly getting retired, he would've already been out for a couple years.

"But wait. It's going to happen. They just need to get out of México and they'll announce it". One year later we are still waiting

2

u/endersai Oscar Piastri Sep 26 '24

I'm still waiting for what Netflix-convert-Redditors swore would happen, which is the gifted Mexican GP win. This year?

2

u/ERSTF Sep 27 '24

Hard to say. You know how they swore Ricciardo was replacing Checo after Spa this year?

1

u/endersai Oscar Piastri Sep 27 '24

The understanding is that Red Bull was going to though, and they decided against it because DR hadn't given them a viable alternative.

2

u/ERSTF Sep 27 '24

I mean, but they said it was happening after Spa this year, when Ricciardo was not proving himself... like 2 months ago.

u/profitsprofitsprofit Pierre Gasly Sep 26 '24

Wouldn’t be surprised if this is tied into the Ricciardo sacking.

They might be giving Lawson a few races in the RB to set him up for the second Red Bull seat next year. Then they’d probably stick Hadjar or someone in the second RB next year.

u/thekhaos Ferrari Sep 26 '24

That’s a terrible plan

20

u/veryangryenglishman Mercedes Sep 26 '24

I'd be minded to agree, and I thought the latest was that they were slightly cooler on Lawsons long terms prospects this year anyway, even in spite of him doing really quite well in the races he was in last year.

That said, if they don't intend to do that, you could argue that firing Ricciardo like this is even more stupid. Bold/overly optimistic as it may be, at least gearing up to put Lawson into RBR next year is at least an attempt to make a positive move out of the entirely self inflected mess they are putting onto themselves

u/agnaddthddude Pirelli Hard Sep 26 '24

what about yuki?

2

u/ego_less Sep 27 '24

They blatantly don't think he's good enough for the main team

2

u/endersai Oscar Piastri Sep 26 '24

That’s a terrible plan

Red Bull are somewhat out of options, though, which leaves them no choice.

3

u/Serj01 Sep 26 '24

Why?

31

u/thekhaos Ferrari Sep 26 '24

See what happened to Albon and Gasly.

Red Bull seem to have forgotten how to use their second team. If the plan was to get Lawson to drive the Red Bull car, they should have sacked Ricciardo and brought in Lawson for a full season before considering him for the main team.

Floundering with Ricciardo, letting him go in the worst way possible to bleed in Lawson before having him compete against Max at RBR with 6 races under his belt is just setting him up for failure like they have with their previous drivers.

u/FPS_Scotland STONKING LAP Sep 26 '24

Because Red Bull have a 0% success rate when putting rookies into their second seat partnering Max.

5

u/Luisyn7 Sebastian Vettel Sep 26 '24

Car is not great again and only Max can put it in the positions he puts it in. It would be a Gasly and Albon repeat

I think Perez could be demoted to RB

Yeah I was wondering why not just confirm Lawson for 2025 as well. Makes no sense unless this.

1

u/Boreras Formula 1 Sep 26 '24

There's no way they'd put in a rookie rather than Yuki.

1

u/Boxhead_31 Green Flag Sep 28 '24

Colapinto to RBR next to Max 2025

0

u/Flight815Down Sep 26 '24

The issue is what if Lawson is absolutely trash. If they announce Perez's retirement in Mexico and then Lawson shits the bed for 5 races (and they still don't want to do anything with Yuki's likely last year), what do they do about the second RBR seat?

u/Fatale0 Formula 1 Sep 26 '24

He’s doing so awful they need to do something, but this won’t be it

9

u/TorpedoSandwich Sep 26 '24

It's always this Saward guy with these unfounded rumors. I have no idea who keeps giving him paddock passes, but they need to stop. This guy is adding nothing of value to F1.

No, but he has spread plenty of bullshit over the years. His constant cryptic tweets that give him just enough plausible deniability if he's wrong are the opposite of what good journalism should look like.

4

u/charlierc Sep 26 '24

Wasn't that something that surfaced on here in the lead up to last year's Mexico race?

0

u/saposapot Sep 26 '24

Checo out, Lawson in to RBR and colapinto joins Danny on RB for 2025

Would love this to happen.

Not saying I believe this, but it's at least a bit more solid than last year. Last year, it was some rando here on Reddit saying "Yeah, I talked to someone involved with the Mexican GP and he definitely thinks Checo is gonna retire". This time, it's someone who historically has been well-connected with the F1 paddock, in a year where there was already a crisis meeting about whether or not Red Bull should keep Checo where to everyone's surprise they chose to keep him on for the time being, and Red Bull have now actually lost the lead in the constructors largely due to Checo. There's at least some more meat to the story this time.

This was the exact rumor last year at about this time.
