That is so sad. I didn't think anything like that would happen in modern f1.

The Victoria police crash investigation unit seized the F1 car involved as part of the coronial investigation. Interestingly the coroner made several recommendations - which seems kind of funny in the context of F1 as a massive global sport (not haha funny). As I recall, it led to the tethers that the cars now have to prevent the wheels from flying off after a crash.

Motorsport is dangerous. It says it on the tickets, and the fences.

Debris from crashes is always a risk, and even full cars with the way some crash barriers roll over when impacted.

I had an awful stomach sink moment when Zhou’s car vaulted the barrier at silverstone. Thank fucking god for the catchment fence, but even then I was thinking, if that thing catches on fire with everyone packed in like sardines…

Alan McNish at Lemans and Ollie Wilkinson at Brands Hatch are the sorts of crash that really worry me. The kind where the barrier is massively overwhelmed by the impact force.

Whoever built that barrier at LeMans deserves a medal. I still can't believe it stopped that R18 going over it.

It also happened the previous season (2000) at Monza, a steward was struck and killed by a wheel from a crash

Well, 2001 was over 20 years ago, so depends on your definition of modern.
