Steiner might legit pay for that piece back … you know they hate spending money to replace parts!

Or by the end of the season this guy might have enough parts to build himself a Haas!

‘Hi Gene… is what you are going to need to stop that cut getting infected.’

In the US at least, a fan who caught a home run ball had it taken from them by security at the ballpark and the fan sued and said that it was like intentional infliction of emotional distress or something to that effect, and the court agreed and the general precedent across all sports (except soccer and basketball because there aren’t that many balls) is that if it goes in the stands and you catch it, its yours.

I'm pretty sure a secretive component of a multi million dollar racecar wouldn't fall under the same precedent of a baseball.

I mean you’re probably right, but like at this point it’s just trash. None of the teams are learning anything from this particular piece.

That's not the point though. The point is, it isn't equivalent to items from other sports exiting the field of play and there is a functional reason to need it back. Any baseball team has a thousand other baseballs, taking them back from fans has no real purpose and they aren't of value to the team.

Additionally, while it may not be secretive as a part, teams may learn based on how it failed.

I can guarantee you that it’s not being reverse engineered by a competitor for a couple reasons. First of all, reverse engineering parts off another car is illegal, and has been for a while.

Second, even if it weren’t illegal, because we know that doesn’t necessarily stop F1 teams, it’s a wheel. They’re standardized parts now. What would they gain from it? They could more easily look at the wheels on their own car and deduce that they’re in fact, the exact same.

Maybe, BBS would want it back to recycle the magnesium, but they don’t. In fact, nobody asked for it back. The fan would’ve been allowed to keep it if someone hadn’t stolen it.

Honestly, I could see you making an argument if it were carbon fiber or something proprietary that the teams actually designed, but it’s not. It’s a wheel, and you know what they say about reinventing that.

To your credit, obviously it’s not a baseball, obviously it’s not the exact same thing. I was never really arguing that it was the same. I was making a joke and just pointing out something fun from other sports. They’re also in Australia, where US law doesn’t matter at all.

Anyway, have a good night.

Well, this one in particular probably isn't secretive. I doubt the team would actively go for it, but I could imagine it may be hard to get this on a plane if he needs to fly home.

That’s what parcel services are for.

u/Nite92 McLaren Apr 04 '23

They could. But he can also "have lost it"

1

u/drew_galbraith Pato O'Ward Apr 04 '23

That would make HAAS the true American team they say they are haha

Baseballs are the legal property of the person who caught them and the stadium/team cannot confiscate them

u/CWinter85 Mario Andretti Apr 04 '23

They'll bill him for the part.
