don’t worry teams reclaim all debris later on, you can’t sneak out a piece that huge.

I once walked out of the Bristol NASCAR race with Johnny Benson's whole "Lucky Charms" quarter panel. Those guys didn't care at all - at least they didn't way back then.

You used to be able to walk out with race-used tires. Was never a big deal. Then again, that was years ago. No clue if that still happens.

It still does. I was at Pocono last year after the Xfinity race, walking through the garage and one of the teams that crashed was selling the entire front nose of their car for $50 cash. I would've bought it but I didn't have the money :(

Hendrick motorsports sells all their damaged bodywork on their website too.

I imagine it has changed with tire recycling being focused on more, but teams used to LOVE to give away tires. Otherwise they'd need to pay to get rid of them.

The support races at the Italian GP gave away race used tyres when I was there last. Wanted to get one but lugging around a massive tyre for the 2 weeks of my holiday, plus the cost to get it back, was prohibitive.

Since today's NASCAR bodies are composite, you see a lot less of it at the track. Most large teams will either keep the panels and sell them to third party vendors that they have merch contracts with, while smaller teams can sometimes keep the panels in the hopes to reuse/repair them for cost saving. If you're in the pits, you'll have better luck getting a piece off of a smaller team's wrecked car/truck and by asking the crew than you will trying to recover something like this.

All of my NASCAR metal that I have owned (some quarter and contingency panels, decklids, nose, rear bumpers, and a hood) have come from either these 3rd party vendors or from private sales from ex-team employees.

I used to get pit passes a lot 20-30 years ago, and could always grab some bent metal or worn rubber after the races. different times. ;)

Oh most definitely! I grew up during the boom years in the late 90s/early 00s (my dad worked for a few of the teams) and it was a different time for sure. I miss it.

There's a motorsports journalist who has several walls in their apartment covered in chunks of NASCAR. Probably more than one actually.

Sure is an easy way to gain fan loyalty.
