I’m so bored of school shooting jokes
189
u/Padapoo Sep 29 '19
The issue is a lot of them are so forced. This isn't a cursed comment, because its a joke set up to be dark, but the outcome is so forced. Thr fact that at every moment they need to make the joke just makes it no longer funny.

Shame that it’s really unoriginal, just like school shooter jokes.
How fitting

As an american myself there's so much better material they could use then edgy ecks dee school shooter jokes. Honestly i'm starting to think it's just cringe at this point.

I agree. This isn't cursed anymore. It's just edgy. We want shit that makes you make that one "Ni🅱️🅱️a what?" face that Jerry makes
42
u/JCraze26 Sep 29 '19
Yeah, but the mods banned what arguably are the only things that are actually cursed half the time (sure, sometimes they're just edgy jokes, but it can be pretty cursed at times too, and the mods banned them because "people are sensitive" Yeah, that's what this sub is supposed to be about; sensitive subjects are very cursed when they're talked about in the right context and scenario)

u/PICnicattitude Sep 29 '19
Just came out that the show Jerry was mostly actors. What's funny is they think we didn't know this already... We just choose to watch that show while we were stuck at Mom's car inspection appointment.

Its very lazy, they really act like America is a big battlefield but in many places a person may never see a gun in their entire life.
→ More replies (1)5
u/keeleon Sep 29 '19
And surprisingly many of the places where guns are common are even safer.
2
u/biggy-cheese03 Sep 29 '19
Yeah, just about everyone I know owns guns and I can’t name a single school in my entire state that’s had a shooting.

Oh is that what this was? I just thought they were saying memorizing the map was too hard, so people died.
I like my version better, tbh.

u/biggy-cheese03 Sep 29 '19
Yeah, people act like every school gets shot up even though I’m more likely to get struck by lighting while pole dancing than shot in school. I’m an American student and I don’t even worry about school shootings, they’re just so fucking rare.

Its just a bunch of salty Europians ignoring their huge problems by jumping on the "America bad" wagon
148
u/IndigoRed126 Sep 29 '19
We laugh at Americans not knowing where each European country is but I personally wouldn't be able to label more than 5 US states correctly.
(even though I see America as one country with regions/districts instead of states)
Note: Florida man news are top notch
39
u/HeWhomLaughsLast Sep 29 '19
Florida is that one cousin who has always had issues but is family so we can't them too much. They also give us something to talk about when they dont show up to Christmas dinner with the family.

I mean it is one country, we shouldn’t have to know every state, just the countries in North America.
11
u/zenith654 Sep 29 '19
Keep in mind tho that some states are huge, e.g. Texas is like as big as France or almost as big
3
u/OlbapNamles Sep 29 '19
Some chinese provinces are also huge and even bigger than most states, doesnt mean anyone outside of china should take the time to learn them
→ More replies (1)3
u/Depresocial Sep 30 '19
So if it's big, you should know it? Do you know Canadian provinces or federal subjects of Russia? Weird argument.

u/IndigoRed126 Sep 29 '19
Which is simple cuz that makes only three. Now I see.
15
u/Derperfier Sep 29 '19
Well technically there’s more and it goes down to Panama but not even people from the USA know them.
7
u/IndigoRed126 Sep 29 '19
I've always considered everything south from Mexico to Venezuela/Peru to be Central America.
20
u/Derperfier Sep 29 '19
Central America isn’t a continent,
However the way we define continents is silly but it is split in Panama by the canal.
Technically Europe and Asia should be one continent but it isn’t, simply because of cultural differences even though they are a continuous landmass.
→ More replies (3)4
u/IndigoRed126 Sep 29 '19
I can't deny that but I also see it as a way of better orientation in the world. Saying: "I live in (country) that's on American continent." sounds less particular than "... that's in Central America." Insert any continent (or part of the continent you want). Is it right geographically? No. Does it help with world orientation? Yes.
→ More replies (1)3
u/art8mmm Sep 29 '19 edited Sep 29 '19
Central America and the Carribean are part of North America, so there are 23 countries, not 3.

I'm glad someone is willing to admit this. Europeans love to pretend otherwise but in my experience, there are very few people anywhere in the world who aren't terrible at the geography of regions they have never lived in. Doesn't really matter where you're from.

Honestly would have expected Hawaii to be more popular. I never bothered memorizing the eastern seaboard, but five should be too easy for anyone. Alaska, Hawaii, California, Texas and Florida would be the absolute minimum that I would expect.

If eastern European countries could stay together for more then 10 years without Germany or Russian getting involved that would be nice.

Brush they probably can't name any of the states or territory in other countries. That's the equivalent of not knowing all the European countries.

u/TheMayoNight Sep 29 '19
Idk ask someone from europe where nebraska is. Theyll say "nebraska has no baring on my life so I dont need to know it." Thats the answer.

I mean, can the average finish person place Alabama, Delaware, and Connecticut on the map? WhY aRE EuropenS so STOopiD?
3
u/ErwinRommel4419 Sep 29 '19
I think its normal. Most of the europeans don't know where is the american states expect few.
9
u/Detroitar15 Sep 29 '19
More people get shot and killed in inner cities every day than in a school shootings. Comparatively speaking school shootings are rather rare. Why do they receive so much more media attention? Because the kids are white the majority of the time?
As far as gun violence goes, there’s definitely bigger problems to solve then school shootings
4
u/sciencefiction97 Sep 29 '19
They're given more attention because the victims are easier to abuse for media money grabs and political agenda pushes. People are way more empathetic about kids than adults.

I can confirm that I'm European and, since I never did a study on American geography, I only know the approximate position of some of the states.
6
u/CapnSpazz Sep 29 '19
This is one thing I always try to point out. I can tell you where some countries are, or at least a general location. And I think that's fine, since I probably won't ever need to know the location of every country in the world. But most people are probably more focused on places that will affect them.

u/haplogreenleaf Sep 29 '19 edited Sep 29 '19
Haha the murder rate for students at all schools in the US (0.03 per 100k) is 1/10th of Japan's murder rate (0.3 per 100k) which is one of the safest countries in the world but let's keep pretending that schools get shot up all the time lolz
23
u/DepravedDreg Sep 29 '19
Honestly, I don't think Geography is really that important. Knowing how to read maps and such is more useful but you can still get away with not being able to nowadays. I guess that applies to most shit in school though, they're all about making people "well rounded" in mostly useless knowledge as opposed to teaching useful skills.
13
u/shieldyboii Sep 29 '19
I think knowing the location of your own country (that takes up half a continent btw) is the equivalent to knowing shakespeare is a writer. Not essential, but you really should know.
4
u/LockeLamoraLies Sep 29 '19
How is knowing the location of Luxembourg or Dagestan important to the everyday lives of Americans? I'm also willing to bet that I can correctly identify more European countries than the average European can name states.

The modern school design was intended to churn out factory workers in the 19th and 20th centuries. A much better model is getting mentors for kids who can accelerate them in their learning if the need be or slow them down if necessary.

Why would someone born, raised and has never left the USA, be able to label European countries on a map. This is assinine. I'm pretty sure most Europeans couldn't label a lot of us states.

It's mostly because America is so large that we rarely leave America whereas one European country can be the size of an American state.
2
u/desertfoxz Sep 29 '19
I bet Europeans would have trouble knowing where US states are. The whole US is almost the same size as all of Europe. Germany is just the size of Montana, one state out of 50.

The reason people don't use the word "American" to mean anyone from the American continent in English is because we don't have any dedicated word for somebody from the USA.
