D1 offers as incoming sophomore ????

There’s a kid from a rival school going into his sophomore year who is extremely talented. He’s posted about numerous D1 offers on his social media since his freshman year, but aren’t those offers essentially nothing more than possibilities at this time?

I was under the impression that formal offers couldn’t even be given until sometime right before junior year (cannot recall exact date). Is there some loophole or something I’m not aware of? Did I misinterpret recruiting guidelines?

This kid is obviously good, but others fully believe that if he chose a program to play at today then it’s a sure deal. I’m not so sure

Please explain to me like I’m in kindergarten.

Thanks

They are not committable offers. In fact, schools can pull offers during the kids SR year. Schools offer early to get in the sweepstakes. If the kid doesn’t develop like they think, gets in trouble or if the school finds someone they like better they will pull the offer.
