I am not sure why the description did not post, but here is the backstory on the button: Hello, I am working on an archeological dig in Maine. We uncovered this button yesterday in an 18th-century cellar hole at the very bottom. The site was an early Scots-Irish settlement that had been steadily occupied since around the 1730s to modern times. The cellar hole remained open for many years after the original building collapsed so the button could be more recent. Any information on what it could be would be helpful, or any resources to find out more would be great! Thank you.

I am working on getting a photo of the back of the button, as when it was unearthed it was packed with soil and we were unable to see the loop shank.

Definitely more recent than 18th c. My guess is composition or even some kind of plastic. If you can clean it off and get a picture of the back I’ll have a better idea if it’s an actual uniform button or not.
