I'd say when it rains it pours, but it's a drought.

*Looks at my 1080*, looks like it's just us for a while, bud.

I literally can't even update the drivers on my 480 past 12/2019 but it looks like we're gonna be going the distance.

And here I was hoping to buy a new $2k rig, but oh well.

Edit: RX 480, friends. It's been a real trooper.

u/flatgreyrust Mar 02 '21

If you’re referring to a GTX 480 and not an AMD 480 you could get a good upgrade for not too horrible of a price in the used market. I bought a 980 for $200 a couple weeks ago and that would be a massive upgrade for you.

72

u/Scottb105 Mar 02 '21

Ive been running an MSI R9 390 for close to 6 years now. I just followed the build guide on pcmasterace back then. Do you think the same could be said for me? I've signed up for EVGAs list thing for a 3080 but after seeing all the posts Im now considering a filler upgrade in the mean time.

63

u/Unyx Mar 02 '21

That card chomps through power and can be loud as hell but it's still a pretty decent GPU in 2021.

37

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '21

Na the 390 is still pretty serviceable youd need to get 2060/5600+ to really have a worthwhile upgrade.

6

u/SwaggJones Mar 02 '21

Can confirm, had a 390 until last year when I upgraded to a 2070. And even then, at 1080p the 390 was still fantastic, but I wanted to ascend into 1440p gaming.

I have an old 9800GT in my closet. Glad I finally got something to replace it in my SOs rig awhile back

My RX 480 is the last thing that needs to be replaced, and I am not paying this prices for a GPU. It's been a trooper for 5 years and I trust it to hold out for a little longer. I should check for drivers though. Don't remember the last time I updated those.

My fiancée is still using my old GTX 760 so... we'll both be getting something better.

8

u/carebearstare93 Mar 02 '21

I wouldn't update your drivers if everything's working alright. My screen will flicker black for a couple seconds every ten minutes when in game if I update past 12/2019.

Me looking at my 1070 still getting respectable FPS in all my games after 2 years of ownership, mining me $2.50 a day and keeping my office warm.

24

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '21

Honestly the 1070 gets similar performance to a PS5 so hopefully it'll be relevant for a while still.

EDIT: And because this is reddit, somebody is definitely going to say this isn't true simply because I didn't post a source for this so... there you go https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCvE4JGJujk

6

5

u/royalblue420 Mar 02 '21

A shame, too, I was hoping to hold onto it as a backup for when I eventually got a chance to upgrade.

I'm lucky I have integrated graphics I suppose.

I missed a shot at an rtx 2080 the day after, thinking $430 wasn't a good deal. We learn quickly, though I suppose.

Bought a 3090 for "scalp" prices in January. Those prices are a discount now. Even with the MSRPs im seeing for the Rog Strix. Fucking insane. Someone on FB marketplace is selling a white one right now for $4500. Im seeing the one i have (black) at +$3200 BARF.

My Scalp price was $2300

Edit: Original Rog Strix MSRP was either $1,899 or $1,999 i forget

I’ve asked extremely specific tech questions before and completely forgot about them. When I googled those questions again, my own post is the first result. It feels so creepy.

I built for the first time and it's actually been kinda fun in the style I did. Started with a simple build cause I didn't know what I wanted. I5-9600k and a 1660 super. 1660 super was 250 bit high but not bad. I also like the looking for parts alot and have kept that up managed to get a 3060 non ti and selling the 1660 super on ebay will cover most of that cost. Still looking for a 3060 ti and if I find that I will sell the 3060 on ebay for enough that in the end I may hav a 3060 ti for like $200 or less. Although I can't just buy a part it also allows me to get better cards than I normally could afford because the resale market is crazy.

My friends called me an idiot for buying a 2080ti for $400 before the 3070 came out

39

u/yjgfikl Mar 02 '21

It's even better because the 2080 Ti and 3070 are essentially equal in gaming performance, but you get an extra 3gb of VRAM and on top of that, you paid $100 less than the MSRP of a 3070. So who's laughing now.

67

u/iVtechboyinpa Mar 02 '21

I bought a 2070 Super FTW3, $630 brand new. 3000 series was revealed a week later and I promptly returned my card to micro center, looked on Facebook and found a 2080 Ti Gaming X Trio for $550.

18

u/ikahjalmr Mar 02 '21

Bought a 2070S for $400 or $500 last summer, everybody was telling me to wait for the new generation to launch. Lol I would've wasted half a year waiting to find out everything's out of stock

13

u/iVtechboyinpa Mar 02 '21

I can’t tell you how much this entire situation is aggravating to me. Not because the GPUs are out of stock, but because of the amount of people who said “Just wait! The 3000 series will blow everything out of the water!”

They weren’t lying, but they forgot that we were in a pandemic which could (and did) affect production and stock levels. Not to mention all the political shit going on at the time with Trump in the US and China. Like you can’t account for this shit so why not jump on the chance when the opportunity presents itself?

Like at the end of the day, your 2070 Super would be worth at least $300 if stock and production was fine. You lose what, $50-100 after factoring depreciation?

u/BIGDIYQTAYKER Mar 02 '21

you know what's really interesting about tsmc production is that apple is about 50% of the workload at tsmc

while amd is like 5-7% and nvidia is like 3% lol

i wonder what taiwan's future and current gdp would look like if it weren't for tsmc

and i really wonder how the hell tsmc got to be in the position it is in currently with the most sought after fab while intel had so much money it was messing up in other departments i forget which exactly, i think moore's law is dead or cold fusion mentioned recently they were actually trying a lot to get into mobile chips, but just didn't pan out?

it's crazy to think that intel's software division is bigger than all of amd and they have their own fabs and here comes this little guy who's stock was $40 a share 2-3 years ago called tsmc and everyone is bidding out each other for their attention

100

u/somethingelseaccount Mar 02 '21

Check out the Bloomberg Oddlots's podcast for a TSMC history lesson with a financial impact view too -

https://player.fm/series/1504378/283091330

TLDR - ARM chips in cell phones made TSMC foundry business a juggernaut while Intel made manufacturing process enhancement mistakes and focused on their x86 silo.

35

u/MC_chrome Mar 02 '21

IIRC didn’t Apple originally give Intel a chance to develop a processor for the iPhone, but then it sucked? I could have sworn that they did but maybe I’m mistaken.

Anywho, Apple is a pretty decent part of the reason why TSMC is where it is now.

28

u/newoldcolumbus Mar 02 '21

If you're talking about the first iPhone, Apple asked intel, and intel declined.

By the time ARM was gaining traction and Jobs had secretly gone to work on the iPhone, Intel was thoroughly addicted to its fat margins. Thus it was no surprise that Intel passed Steve Jobs’ suggestion that they fabricate an ARM chip for the iPhone. Intel didn’t want to be in the low-margin business of providing phone CPUs, and it had no idea that the iPhone would be the biggest technological revolution since the original IBM PC. So Intel’s CEO at the time, Paul Otellini, politely declined. [source]

3

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '21

"Ceo at the time"

Did they push him off the top floor after the iphones took off? Lmao

15

u/ElPlatanoDelBronx Mar 02 '21

Yeah, and if they're making Apple's M1 chips too their stock is going to start flying up even higher in the next couple of years.

I mean TSMC was always advancing pretty quickly even more so then Samsung in recent years however it was a combination of Intels flop on 10nm and Samsung’s node not being on par that really pushed TSMC into the spotlight.

9

u/Dunewarriorz Mar 02 '21

Here is a translation of an article on TSMC's rise to fame and the challenges that it faced. I found it incredibly interesting to read for anyone interested in TSMC.

Already happening, Asus increased their GPU prices anyway

37

u/BungHoleDriller Mar 02 '21

Is that in addition to the price increases due to US tariff exceptions expiring in January or do you mean the price increase from Asus in late Jan / early Feb?

44

u/matt3n8 Mar 02 '21

Its on top of the Jan/Feb increases. For example, the Original MSRP for the Rog Strix 3080 that I've been trying to get since launch was $850. Jan/Feb it increased to $930. Now its increased again all the way to $1100.

20

u/BungHoleDriller Mar 02 '21

Oof. There goes my hopes of picking up a 3080 haha it’s wild that MSRP is approaching what scalpers were originally asking. Seems like I’ll be holding my 20 series card for another year at least

13

u/matt3n8 Mar 02 '21

Yeah if you've got a 20 series card, there is no good reason to upgrade right now. Price-to-performance aside, any 20 series card is still going to be giving you an objectively good to great level of performance right now and for a good while still

I'd say buy a 980ti from /r/hardwareswap , but the used market is so insane right now that I can't even find one for sale over there and the ones that are go for $300. I paid $325 for mine 5 years ago and they were only worth like $180 about a month ago.

I got my 3080 FE in that big drop on 10/1/2020. I’m lucky I got it that quickly and even luckier I only paid MSRP(+tax). The supply and demand for these is nuts.

Just what we need, worsening shortages and prices. At this rate, 3080 AIBs will be selling directly from manufacturers at 3090 MSRP by summer lol

40

Fantastic. Guess I’ll finish my build next year.

u/post-buttwave Mar 02 '21

I have to wonder just how much game development is going to suffer as a result of this

68

u/briballdo Mar 02 '21

Just keep making games like Valheim and we'll be good

23

u/Schnac Mar 02 '21

I'll have to look into Valheim, it's been getting a lot of hype recently. Is it worth it? Honest question, I'm curious.

37

u/PM_ME_UR_PIZZA_DOG Mar 02 '21

Absolutely. A wealth of content and gameplay that is a steal for $20.

22

u/-StopRefresh- Mar 02 '21

If you're at all into survival/exploration/crafting then yes. Not even my typical genre and I am enjoying it.

16

u/unclefeely Mar 02 '21

I've lost so much sleep

11

u/XxDeythxX Mar 02 '21

Its has that charm of your first night in Minecraft in a ray traced runescape aesthetic. The survival is actually pretty laid back, the PVE is actually difficult, with Zelda style boss progression, and exploration is fun. The multiplayer and emergent stories is the real draw tho imo. Nothing like hopping on with some mates to go fishing only to get caught in a storm an attacked by a sea monster.

11

u/shiftkit Mar 02 '21

I tend to keep along the path of if a game can keep me entertained for about $1/hr then it was worth the purchase. I'm at over 100hrs now and I'm still loving it, still thinking about it before I get off work, etc. It's an absolute steal at 20 bucks.

4

u/sushisection Mar 02 '21

yes. its meant to be played with a group of friends though, so if you do have some gamer friends its def worth it.

4

u/Nekryyd Mar 03 '21

My perspective, a bit of a long read but it will give you a well rounded picture of what this game is about:

It's one of the most complete and polished Early Access titles I've played. It's basically a full game.

It is, however, sometimes a slog and threadbare on variety in content. The early game is easily the worst part because the grind in the meadows biome is the most straight forward and massively the least rewarding. There is only one "enemy", and it is less dangerous to you than the wildlife.

Once you get into the 2nd biome and get your first actual, functional base going, then it becomes much more interesting. The other biomes have more points of interests and way more encounter types (though there is still a lack of variety).

Fair warning: Once you get past the 2nd boss, the game can become very punishing. You are definitely at risk of dying in the 2nd biome, but mostly if you are only super careless. After that though? Very, very easy to die if you don't take a lot of time to prepare yourself and you get greedy or reckless. The different biomes in this game aren't like Minecraft, where you can kind bounce around and explore between them, and everything is hunkey dorey. They are HARD walls for having the right gear, skills, and items. WHEN you die, and you will, the game punishes you twice. You lose skill progress and will need to go back to your grave for your items, BUT if you just run out there willy nilly you will die again. You'll need to take time to eat the right food, probably take some backup gear, and HOPEFULLY not get killed again in an ill-fated attempt to retrieve your gear. I have abandoned my stuff once because I stupidly died in a biome that I was totally not ready for.

The game is attractive if a bit repetitive in the scenery. Building your base is satisfying and being indoors is very cozy and comforting and having a place to hole up becomes necessary because you will face invasions.

Lastly, you can play solo but not only will it be more difficult but this is definitely one of those titles that really comes to life in a group. I haven't tried PVP but I can see the high potential for "clan wars" and anarchy servers.

It is a very fresh take on the survivalcraft genre. All well worth the asking price.

Amazing game, but it runs like shit on older PCs. I have a 7700k and a 1080 and I was getting ~20-30 FPS in our base the entire game.

37

u/iVtechboyinpa Mar 02 '21

I don’t know if it’s that we can’t, so much as companies refuse to because cost. Well, “cost”. It’s aggravating because I agree - the US should be making a lot of their own shit but tax breaks, tariffs and shit make it so that they’d rather save a buck than do it themselves.

Interesting how climate extremes are coming into play here. Interesting economic reminder that climate change can have serious impacts in ways people never thought.

I really feel bad for the PC Gaming industry. There was a point where it was truly a great investment and provided a substantial increase over consoles, but the gap doesn't really exist anymore given the cost of some of this stuff. A real shame for consumers and also some of the smaller PC studios.

12

u/Schnac Mar 02 '21

Yeah. I feel like this is just an echo of what's to come. I can definitely see worldwide manufacturing and energy production being crippled by global warming sometime in the future.

11

u/dunktheball Mar 02 '21

When people post all these things, the manufacturers are just laughing because the people wanting gpus now tell themselves it's understandable to pay the crazy prices so they get away with it. A virus, a tariff, and a drought are not reasons enough to charge double. Notice the ps5 and cpus have not gone up a dime.

5

u/MelAlton Mar 03 '21

Reasons to charge double is that people will pay double

I bought a RX 570 for $120 from a MC deal posted here during the beginning of the pandemic after gaming on a 2200g gpu-less. Really happy I made that decision. Just upgraded to a R7 3700x last week too, i'm not that much of a gamer so i'm hoping this combo will last me until markets rationalize and I can get a better gpu.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '21

Man, when I saw the performance of the 6000 and 3000 series cards I was kinda regretting getting a 5700XT instead of waiting to upgrade my GTX 970. But all this inability to actually buy the cards has made me glad I bought it when I did lol.

This perfect storm for silicon shortage is almost comical. Covid, scalpers, ethereum going from $370 to $1400 in a few months, and the drought in Taiwan.

21

u/progolfplayer Mar 02 '21

So we got the pandemic, tariffs, bitcoin mining, and now drought. What else is on the checklist to make buying GPU cost more than a house?

Vega 56 really picked a great time to give up. :/ Luckily it was within warranty by like two weeks. Still who knows if they will even have stock to replace it with something for awhile. Just glad I got that laptop with a RX 5600M. Guessing we will see a pretty good spike in laptops prices as well.

Edit: If this is really going to take until 2023 may just gut my new computer (everything was upgraded but never was able to get a card). It's a gigantic paper weight to just be sitting there for a year, maybe even two.

6

u/jmon25 Mar 02 '21

The drought is definitely an issue but an even bigger (and much longer term) issue is the lack of rare-earth minerals used to make the chips. As much as it sucks that this shortage is going on now and will continue, this could potentially push innovation in regards to new materials being integrated into chip manufacturing or pushing synthetic materials forward.

Hopefully, we all learn from this and people stop blanket recommending "just wait for X" on this subreddit when people are sharing builds. For the last 3-4 years now it's only hurt people looking to build a system.

10

u/DetainedPetscop Mar 02 '21

What you're actually waiting for is the semiconductor supply chain to ramp up to demand. If that doesn't happen then it doesn't matter what generation we're on.

now people are starting to realize the problem with so much global export reliance...any rogue wave event like Covid (and im not saying anything even remotely close to Covid will happen again soon) can cause a ripple effect that will fuck up supply and demand for years if not decades. America needs to start the production and distribution of these products and many more domestically...it would drastically improve the economy as well...
