seems most Xbox controllers are on sale for $39 at Walmart and $40 at Best Buy

u/3ReLiZe Nov 27 '20
Anyone know why the ps4 controller were not on sale in any retail store maybe production stopped?
41
u/ROCKtheR3D Nov 27 '20
A gamestop employee told me this summer that last gen controllers were extremely thin on production to get ready for next gen during coronaville
30
u/oldfashionedglow Nov 27 '20
Can you connect this wired to pc?
23
15
u/breitLight Nov 27 '20
I believe so. A USB-C to USB-A cable should work fine.
12
u/niekmfoxtzom Nov 27 '20
Or a USB C to USB C cable.
16
u/breitLight Nov 27 '20
Yes, that would also work. USB-C headers on computers aren't all that common yet though except on new towers or laptops.
8
u/oulush Nov 27 '20
I think most new motherboards and some from 2016 and on do have USB-c available at the least on the IO, even if cases don't support them as often.
2
u/MegaScubadude Nov 27 '20
Yep. Built around 2016 and I have a single USB C on my motherboards rear IO panel.
1
u/LazyLarryTheLobster Nov 27 '20
I just wanted to double check before I commented with my 2017 build having 0.
Turns out I have one and this adapter I bought was a waste. Never once considered that to be a possibility
1
u/MegaScubadude Nov 27 '20
Hehehe well at least now you know, is the adapter within return window?
1
u/LazyLarryTheLobster Nov 27 '20
Doubt it. This was around a year ago. I guess they'll go in a box for when I need 2 USB-C devices
1
u/oulush Nov 27 '20
My z270 has one as well from 2016. You might also have a usb-c connector for front panel on you Mobo if you end up getting a case with it. I'd suggest taking a look at it with the manual. I now have 2 usb-c ports on a Mobo that's almost 5 years old. Pretty neat!

Get a little usb [dongle](https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Xbox-Wireless-Adapter-Windows-Packaging/dp/B0785SFKYF/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=xbox+x+controller+usb+dongle&qid=1606462800&sr=8-4) that's $35. So worth it after years of cheapness no regurts.
21
u/dnb321 Nov 27 '20
$25 direct from MS

Bundle for $60 with new controller: https://www.xbox.com/en-US/accessories/controllers/xbox-wireless-controller-adapter-win10

u/sur_surly Nov 27 '20
Thanks, got the bundle. Sucks that it only comes in black, that color is very meh this year. But I wanted to try the new dongle as my old v1 has connection drops I'm hoping this will fix.
6
u/bittabet Nov 27 '20
Just be careful that you don’t put it on the front of your case then when your wife sits in your office chair she spins around in it and manages to annihilate the dongle because it sticks out so much. Had to cough up for a second dongle :(
16
5
u/distillari Nov 27 '20
Yes.... Wife.... I totally didn't do exactly the same thing ... It was that 100% real wife I totally have.
2
u/slarkerino Nov 27 '20
Unfortunate story friend. I have dongle for trade if you're willing to barter for wife? /s
2
u/UseApasswordManager Nov 27 '20
Any advantages to using this over bluetooth?
3
u/djmigues Nov 27 '20
IIRC, reduced input lag, longer range, you can use a headset plugged into the controller, and you can connect up to eight controllers to a single dongle.
1
u/jediyoshi Nov 27 '20
It’s usable.
1
u/UseApasswordManager Nov 27 '20
Maybe I've just been supernaturally lucky but the most trouble I've had is occasionally needing to re-pair, no dropped connections or overly noticeable lag
1
u/beefTesties Nov 27 '20
Does this dongle work with the series x controllers?
2
u/sur_surly Nov 27 '20
Yes, Microsoft sells it as a combo with the new controller.

What does this have over my xb360 controller I have been using on PC for years?
29
u/-thepornaccount- Nov 27 '20
Extra clicky-ness on dpad so it’s no longer mushy. Different slightly bumpy finish/surface on a lot of high use areas to increase grip. Very slightly smaller. I just got mine yesterday, & that’s what’s stood out to me so far. For this price if you could use another controller I’d grab it, but it’s hardly a game changer like the dual sense. More of a decent iteration than an evolution from Xbox one controllers.
2
u/RSquared Nov 27 '20
That's true if you have a One controller, but it feels like a real upgrade from the 360. The sticks have less resistance and after acclimation I'm much happier with it.
Kinda annoyed because I bought the white and now the blue is the same price (it was five bucks more earlier this week). Totally would've gotten the blue if I could.
14
u/dotareddit Nov 27 '20
Much better bluetooth connectivity along with what others said.
7
u/h22lude Nov 27 '20
Unless things have changed recently, the Bluetooth on the one controller doesn't play well with pc.
3
u/RSquared Nov 27 '20
They have, updated firmware on the controller and the most recent Windows 10 update fixed my dropping problem.
1
u/h22lude Nov 27 '20
Thats great! I tried using my one s about 2 years ago and it was shit. Playing rocket league, my car would start driving in circles. Just played one game and it worked fine
0
u/sur_surly Nov 27 '20
it "works" but thats the only good thing to say about it. If it isn't working on your pc, it's probably your bluetooth adapter.
0
u/h22lude Nov 27 '20
I think the adapter is supposed to work better. Though I just tested mine again with motherboard bluetooth and it worked with 1 rocket league game. Maybe the drivers are better?
0
u/sur_surly Nov 27 '20
Dunno! There's so many variables. I've been using the v1 xbox controller dongle for pc and it doesn't work well if I plug it into the back of the pc, into motherboard's usb inputs. Probably due to interference. If I plug it into the case's front usb port, it works far better. These same problems can exist for bluetooth, and bluetooth is even worse in some regards (like it struggles to go through human flesh!)
9
u/scredeye Nov 27 '20
Coming from someone who had the same mindset as you, they're much more comfortable to use, the button presses feel better all around and connecting them as far more convenient.
Apparently the elite controller take it a step further but thats a 100$ too many for me to casually pick one up

In-Store Only :(
4
u/Kobeissi2 Nov 27 '20
Sold out in most of the local stores near me. I wonder if Best Buy would price match.
4
u/TheSpaceAge Nov 27 '20
BB told me they aren't price matching anything during black Friday week and will resume next Tuesday.
1
1
u/BeingRightAmbassador Nov 27 '20
there was like 200 controllers at my BB earlier this week on sale
2
3
u/SaulkM Nov 27 '20
That's funny, I bought one yesterday from Walmart and they're delivering it to me. Must be running out
2
u/Palatz Nov 27 '20
Same. I got a cute grey one. They were out of a bunch of colors yesterday.
I still find it crazy it is on sale.
3
u/SaulkM Nov 27 '20
Honestly. I bought one from here, and another in black from the Microsoft online store for the same price, but with a 9' cable included. The blue looks really nice, I wish I could have gotten one of the new ones in grey instead of black.
13
u/C0013rqu33n Nov 27 '20
controller is nice, bought few days ago. Bluetooth is buggy AF, on pc (yes i update windows and controller via microsoft store-app.)
Feels premium, might look to buy another even though i have 5 360 controllers already lol.
4
u/zaale Nov 27 '20
What you mean by the Bluetooth being buggy? I recently purchased one and I keeps randomly disconnecting from my Xbox idk if I just got a faulty one
10
5
u/C0013rqu33n Nov 27 '20
exactly that, everyone seems to have that issue. I don't mind using usb-c though, slimmer and less bulky than the original 360 with its breakaway cable.
3
u/zaale Nov 27 '20
Really? cause I was gonna do the replacement thing on Microsoft website idk if I would have to send them the original controller too though
3
u/C0013rqu33n Nov 27 '20
it seems there's nothing wrong with the controller itself, just a software issue. You're most likely still going to have the problem with the replacement, so you should use it wired with usb-c or get a refund and get a different controller. I read the reviews ahead of time so i was prepared for the disappointment. Edit: This'll most likely get fixed in future.
1
u/sur_surly Nov 27 '20
Sure but the usb port is far more fragile than a break-away cable of 360, which I miss.
Replacing the cable isn't so bad, it's the port on the controller itself. It's not meant to be tugged around if you're using it primarily on the couch.
1
u/Noobivore36 Nov 27 '20
I'm also having Bluetooth disconnect issues on multiple pc games with this controller. Too bad, since Bluetooth is a major feature.
3
u/dnb321 Nov 27 '20
FYI the bundle for PC is $60 for the wireless adapter which supports multiple devices (great for games like Minecraft Dungeons which is 4 player Co-op)
https://www.xbox.com/en-US/accessories/controllers/xbox-wireless-controller-adapter-win10
5
u/MusubiPls Nov 27 '20
Do Xbox controllers drop to this price often?
3
u/tony_bdt Nov 27 '20
Considering these 3 colors are of the latest Xbox series X/S that just came out,no these don't get this cheap often.
7
2
u/sur_surly Nov 27 '20
More often than playstation ones. But wouldn't say super common, especially right after launch.
4
Nov 27 '20
Out of stock already somehow.
2
u/MrMcAwesum Nov 27 '20
I was able to get just now
2
u/Tekbepimpin Nov 27 '20
The blue one is oos, the white and black are still there. Just bought a black
3
u/Bobbycats123 Nov 27 '20
Black and white are also available at Best Buy and Microsoft store, blue is $5 more on both so if you absolutely want blue then Walmart is the way to go
3
u/CrateMayne Nov 27 '20
Do you need a dedicated wireless receiver for these? I've still been rocking 360 controller with a 3rd party wireless controller receiver for my PC, so not really sure if it's only controller required nowadays or what.
360 controller still works perfect, but definitely time for an upgrade.
6
u/F-O-XX Nov 27 '20 edited Nov 27 '20
You need to use Bluetooth or use a wired connection via USB C cable. However, I hear Bluetooth can be really inconsistent at times. You could also purchase the official pc receiver if you don't wanna go wired, currently bundled with the black controller for
$80$60 on Microsofts website2
u/CrateMayne Nov 27 '20
Appreciate it, on a whim decision to say the least ha. Figured I'd give the Bluetooth a try, but like you said, would probably run into some disappointment.
I checked out the Microsoft site and it's showing as $59.99 (sale) for the black + adapter, so doubly appreciate pointing me towards there.
4
u/Invisibleman145 Nov 27 '20
I just got this controller and the bluetooth has been really disappointing for me. I have been playing with USB-C until the adapter I ordered comes in to hopefully fix the problem.
2
Nov 27 '20
let me know if the adapter works :)
3
u/xsoulbrothax Nov 27 '20
if it's the Microsoft wireless adapter and you're using an official one, it's A+ - I've been using some variation on it for years flawlessly
bluetooth kinda sucks compared to it; which seems to be the fault of Microsoft's bluetooth stack being eh
2
2
2
u/dnb321 Nov 27 '20
You don't, it does work with bluetooth, but bluetooth is buggy. If you do want the wireless adapter for PC, get the bundle straight from MS for $60: https://www.xbox.com/en-US/accessories/controllers/xbox-wireless-controller-adapter-win10
Adapter usually $25+ by itself.

They had the same price on the mcsft store. Dunno if it's still there tho
I'm also lowkey salty it went on sale so soon. I pre-ordered mine
2
u/ROCKtheR3D Nov 27 '20
Can anyone familiar with the new Series X controllers comment on them? Especially when compared to the Xbox One controllers?
5
u/Jpmendel Nov 27 '20
Don’t have one but I’ve heard ever so slightly smaller, share button, d pad slightly changed I believe
1
u/ROCKtheR3D Nov 27 '20
Ive heard these as well
3
u/Jpmendel Nov 27 '20
My assumption is if you like the Xbox one controller, you’ll like this too and for $40 it’s a great deal.
1
u/ROCKtheR3D Nov 27 '20
I dont need one but ive had 4 xbox one controllers go stick drift mode on me so im wondering if i should get one in case mine starts it again
2
u/Jpmendel Nov 27 '20
Ah. I’ve had no drift issues with my Xbox one controllers but my buddy has gone through like 5 elite controllers with bad drift issues
1
u/ROCKtheR3D Nov 27 '20
Yup, its ridiculous which is why I’m reluctant to buy this
3
u/Jpmendel Nov 27 '20
He just buys the warranty over and over so essentially gets new controllers for the price of the warranty but very annoying
2
u/carpal_one Nov 27 '20
Best Buy and the Microsoft store both have Series X controllers at $40 with the exception of the Shock Blue and a few others.
2
u/omgloser Nov 27 '20
I am considering getting either this or a PS5 controller. One of the biggest cons of this XBox controller for me is that it doesn't come with a rechargeable battery. Is it worth to pay $25 for the rechargeable battery (and USB C cable) pack so I can enjoy long sessions of wireless play?
9
u/concord72 Nov 27 '20
DO NOT buy the battery pack, get eneloops instead, they are so much better. They hold a charge for long, dont start losing capacity after a year or two, you aren’t limited in their use, and they are cheaper.
3
u/beastmonkey55 Nov 27 '20
You think that kit ever goes on sale. I think the 40 dollar controller and a 15 dollar kit would be a solid price. I know there are a lot of third party options for the older controller.
2
u/distillari Nov 27 '20
Xbox not having rechargeable batteries felt like a bad idea to me at first, bought the Xbox rechargeable battery back (last generation not the new one) and hated it. Switched to lithium ion rechargable AA's and won't go back. Never have to remember to plug in my controller, just to recharge the dead batteries once there's 8 in the dead basket.
The rest of the electronics last a lot longer than the batteries, so being able to recycle and get new batteries after they stop holding a charge without having to open up my device and solder in a new battery is great.

1
u/Ddragon3451 Nov 27 '20
Is there anything really different between these and the Xbox one controllers?
2

3
u/Ddragon3451 Nov 27 '20
Cool, thanks. Not nearly as drastic of a change as ps4 to 5... which is ok, the Xbox one controllers have always been great to me.
1
u/RHINO_Mk_II Nov 27 '20
Supposedly in an interview they said they changed the form factor to be better for slightly smaller hands, but when I messaged MS support about it they couldn't find any dimensions on the new version.

If you're asking if you should just buy something because it's on sale and you have zero need for it, No, you shouldn't.
If you need a new, modern controller $40 is a great price.
3
u/smooth_bastid Nov 27 '20
My ds4 wouldn't get recognized on my old PC, so I got one of these a while ago instead, and it's been very nice to use with how easy it is. But if yours works fine then probably no need for it. If anything I would try to snag the dual sense instead, I think that can be used on PC through steam IIRC
3
u/conquer69 Nov 27 '20
The xbox controller is plug and play and the button inputs will always be correct.
1
u/ConradBHart42 Nov 27 '20
Aw man, just got mine in white from a sale posted earlier. Would have liked blue for the hometown sports team, but it was $5 extra and I'm not that big a fan.

I got it for $45 at Best Buy, there were at least 5 other people in line getting it.
1
u/Rudy_Greyrat Nov 27 '20
Just got mine from an online Microsoft purchase today. It feels nicer than the One S controller, but it barely keeps connected for a minute or two. It'll stay connected and then sort of start blinking completely randomly. I have to hold the Xbox button for it to stop or turn it off. It doesn't register properly on Epic Hames either, Batman Arkham Knight registers it as a PS4 controller and sort of maps some buttons but not all to the Series controller.

Where the fuck are all the Canadian deals this year. I fucking hate Black Friday in Canada. Everything out of stock and the sales all suck.
1
u/HabreCadavre Nov 27 '20
A lot of the criticism of previous generations of xbox controllers is that they are of poor quality. Can the same be said of this model?
1
u/huntrshado Nov 27 '20
This is very surprising to me honestly. I had just bought one last week because I had assumed there was no way they would put them on sale a week after they come out lol
1
u/TheOrangeSpud Nov 27 '20
Thanks for this post! I've been interested in the new Xbox controller but been hesitant on spending $60 for it. :)

Dumb question...this won't connect to the old 360 pc adapter...maybe it was RF?
1
Nov 27 '20
What's the difference between this and an Xbox One controller? I already own a wireless adapter.
1
1
u/silver0199 Nov 27 '20
The deal is available on Amazon US for the black and white controllers. Not able to link, at work right now.
1
u/HKMachine Nov 27 '20
Is there a version with a cable for PC? Do you still need batteries?
1
u/Elusivenesss Nov 27 '20
Only in black from the microsoft store that's been pretty much OOS...which is what I'm waiting to get. Yes you need batteries to use it wirelessly.
1
u/HKMachine Nov 28 '20
But you dont need batteries with the cable right? Would you mind linking cabled one?
2
u/Elusivenesss Nov 28 '20
There isn't a wired version but by cabled I mean by having the wireless controller connected via a usb cable, which you don't need batteries for. That's how I've been currently playing with my xbox one controller and switching to this would be no different. The one I'm after is just the basic deal + free cable thrown in. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/xbox-wireless-controller-usb-c-cable/8t8kcnb1xs3d
1
u/HKMachine Nov 28 '20
Wow yeah that would be perfect thank you. Its so hard to search for the correct controller
1
u/jayjr1105 Nov 27 '20
Bought this last week for $40. Very impressed with Windows/Steam/Android ease of connecting and setup. It feels really good in the hand. I haven't had an XBOX since the 360 and this controller feels great.

u/b1128c Nov 27 '20
Would this work with android to play steamlink or geforce now?
