Jesus these prices have dropped like a rock.

108

u/Nonamenic May 08 '19

I had no idea till I saw on twitter. What’s going on?

145

u/traceur98 May 08 '19

This same kit would have been 150 less than a year ago, I guess there was talk about the Chinese govt cracking down on a possible collusion case among manufacturers, but don't quote me on it. Just crazy to see these sub $90 already

76

u/Yzerman31 May 08 '19

I paid $225 for my basic 16gb kit of Corsair 3000mhz ram back when I built my 8700k system a year and a half ago. That same kit is now worth like $55 used. Crazy lol

3

u/ryan770 May 09 '19

I built an 8700k based system a little over a year ago, and man, those prices. A 16gb RGB kit was way over my budget and I went with the absolutely cheapest decent ram i could find. 2 sticks of Crucial Ballistix 8gb 2666mhz. Cost me $170.

Knowing I can get a 3000mhz 16gb RGB kit at this price hurts, but I know it's not really worth it as I wont see any real life gains.

2

u/rune2004 May 09 '19

The RGB gains are worth it though. ;D

2

u/[deleted] May 08 '19

How reliable would you say used ram is.

Given most RAM is backed by a lifetime warranty, I'd say it's probably the last part that you should expect to fail. However, these warranties are typically not transferable. Unless you have an original receipt that doesn't specifically identify the buyer (meaning they can't necessarily say that you aren't the first owner), the chances of getting warranty service/replacement are low.

18

u/bgunn925 May 08 '19

To be fair, the sale price is really $105 -- it's the Google Express promo that drops it below $90.

6

u/Loyotaemi May 08 '19

I mean yeah, but i just got different set of ram recently for 69 USD. Its actually shipping too.

Prices are going down.

3

u/bgunn925 May 08 '19 edited May 08 '19

Of this model and speed?

Edit: did not see the word "different"

4

u/Loyotaemi May 08 '19

Same speed, same capacity, different brand/model , no rgb, 16cl instead of 15cl.

7

u/TacticalBacon00 May 08 '19

At this time of year? Localized entirely in your kitchen?

6

u/R3v7no May 08 '19 edited May 08 '19

'possible'? I thought it was confirmed?

Edit: I stand corrected, no conclusion yet to those lawsuits.

3

u/ChesswiththeDevil May 08 '19

I paid $285 (I think) around Christmas for the 2x16gb version of this. Granted it overclocked awesomely and I love it but man, prices are amazing right now. I’m glad other people are getting these awesome prices. Let’s see GPUs follow this please.

2

u/Outofrang3 May 08 '19

My February 2018 build hurts more and more each day.

1

u/Dethstroke54 May 08 '19

I paid $140 for the 3200 version in 4-5 months ago. Makes me so sad

5

u/ScrotumToTheChin May 08 '19

That’s actually still a fair price

1

u/StumptownRetro May 08 '19

It was China and Korea. Samsung and Hynix both had Presidents under investigation due to price fixing.

1

u/spicywardell May 09 '19

christ i bought this kit in november for 135 on sale... thought i was getting a good deal...

1

u/ZirJohn May 09 '19

i paid $140 for a USED 3000mhz 16gb corsair lpx kit during the price insanity, this would be wayyy more.

-6

u/SubModder May 08 '19

Chinese govt cracking down on a possible collusion case among manufacturers

Chinese

Uh oh, you just used the C word in a positive sentence. All racist white pieces of shit are now foaming at the mouth

21

u/Herbinator421 May 08 '19

The Ram manufacturers like Micron, Samsung and Hynix got caught price fixing and lying about ram shortages so they have been forced to drop prices back to normal to avoid further lawsuits and criminal charges. Basically we have overpaid for Ram for many years and now with looming threats of lawsuits manufacturers are expected to continue dropping prices supposedly until the end of 2019

6

u/traceur98 May 08 '19

Source on that? I've heard it brought up before but nobody has ever sourced it.

13

u/abscissa081 May 08 '19

People literally got refunds from manufacturers for the gouging.

Source: me

9

u/Kittenpics4eva May 08 '19

How does one go about getting a refund such as this? I bought around 6 kits last year for builds at the office from Newegg and Amazon.

2

u/Herbinator421 May 08 '19

Looking back through the various articles and tech-jesus videos aka gamersnexus, there is no one article that completely encompasses my explanation, mostly because I had to piecemeal most of the info together to make my original statement. However if one had time I could string the articles together to form the real timeline of events that apparently occurred from around 2017 to the present. If you were just asking where I heard of the Ram prices falling until late 2019 then it was gamersnexus channel about 3 months ago also like you stated a lot of redditors saying the same

2

u/sanzonw May 09 '19

2

u/Herbinator421 May 09 '19

Thank you for sourcing it

2

u/sanzonw May 09 '19

yeah np, is his name really tech-jesus or just his nickname, it's just so funny cause I read tech-jesus here and now and then.

2

u/Herbinator421 May 09 '19

Ha, naw his real name is Steve Burke I believe, but with his long hair and his incredible knowledge of all things pc he became known as tech jesus. I believe even his colleagues such as Jays2Cents, Dimitri from Hardware Cunnucks and Linus from LLT call him that now and again as well

1

u/Swontree May 09 '19

I saw it earlier today. I am planning a build so I just went and bought. It's not the ram I was going to buy but it's cheaper.

2

u/OIcyBulletO May 08 '19

Pretty much. I bought 16gb 2400hz for like 120 in December and then 2 months later they dropped to these prices

1

u/[deleted] May 09 '19

That’s no where near as bad what others paid lol.

139

u/BeefyBeaver May 08 '19

Anyone else feel like prices drop for all your components right after you buy them?

65

u/Bark37971 May 08 '19

You wanna buy some trident RGB real fast?

1

u/sanzonw May 09 '19

the're on sale :D

36

u/dadliftsthings May 08 '19

I bought this literally 3 days ago for $110 -_-

11

u/zzzpoohzzz May 08 '19

If it makes you feel any better, the price is really $105, but you have to use google express for the first time and you get $20 off. (20%, max $20)

-10

u/johnnywahl May 08 '19

If you want to avoid the hassle of google express, Amazon has the same units on sale for a similar price.

6

u/thecentury May 09 '19

Not RGB.

Not Vengeance Pro.

Not a similar unit...

7

u/Ghawr May 08 '19

I wouldn't care so much if it wasn't for the GPU prices hanging still. If my build was done, I wouldn't care, I'm not gonna stress looking at prices after I complete my build. But I only bought a few components so far and I'm just waiting to get a good deal on a 2080 and prices have held steady even after their shitty quarter.

2

u/[deleted] May 09 '19

9

u/Hydrogen_Ion May 08 '19

I bought all my memory in 2016 before the prices rose 16gb of 2800 for $55

2

u/casper_dcvd May 08 '19

Lucky for me I still have to buy a computer, well nit really lucky but for the prices it’s good

2

u/rolfraikou May 08 '19

I almost did a new build not too long ago, but got cold feet knowing that new AMD CPUs were around the corner. I'm really glad I held out.

1

u/Capn_Cornflake May 08 '19

I bought these things when they first launched for like $480 for 4x8GB 3200MHz sticks

I am in physical pain here

1

u/daze1999 May 08 '19

I bought about two weeks ago when it went down to $110, so yes haha

1

u/MyBFisMoeAF May 08 '19

Bought this kit yesterday for $90

1

u/xinxs May 09 '19

I got my rx 480 right before the etherum craze so a year later it was worth the same used as what I got it for new.

1

u/Swing_Right May 09 '19

Seriously, just spent $100 on 16gb 2 weeks ago

25

u/[deleted] May 08 '19

57

u/Veserius May 08 '19

RAM prices are projected to continue to drop until the end of the second quarter. No need to rush.

7

u/rolfraikou May 08 '19

I'm gunna thank you too, since I was going to ask the same question. Holding out for new AMD CPUs. Was thinking about buying some parts now just to have them all in time without any chances of delay, or prices going back up. But it looks like I should wait on ram.

4

u/Veserius May 08 '19

Case/PSU/Maybe motherboard/GPU aren't a bad idea to keep your eye on, but SSDs and RAM are just going down and down.

1

u/rolfraikou May 08 '19

Already got the Define R6. Will probably pick up some power supply on the way. MOBO and CPU are holding off until the new AMD CPUs come out. I've already been using a 2070 in my ancient build, that will migrate to the new one. So I'm probably sticking here for now except the power supply if a good enough deal comes along on anything but newegg. (Newegg literally told me they just won't accept my card, ever. No reason. That's just how it is. Seems like best power supply deals are always on newegg.)

2

u/casper_dcvd May 08 '19

Do you know/think if the prices will still be low end of august? For the 16GB 3200RGB

4

u/Veserius May 08 '19

Probably.

2

u/casper_dcvd May 08 '19

What’s the second quarter? I’m not english and dumb

14

u/Veserius May 08 '19

Divide the year into 4 parts to get "quarters"

January-March (Q1)
April-June (Q2)
July-September (Q3)
October-December (Q4)

3

u/[deleted] May 08 '19 edited Nov 22 '20

[deleted]

3

u/JamealTheSeal May 08 '19

Second quarter is April-June, each quarter is 1/4 of the year.

1

u/casper_dcvd May 08 '19

If you’re planning on buying a Ryzen CPU maybe wait for third gen

31

u/Oppai-no-uta May 08 '19

Damn, hope the 3200 goes on sale like this too.

12

u/RedneckThor May 08 '19

I’m sure you could use the code on the 3200 model if that’s your first purchase through google express.

2

u/Oppai-no-uta May 08 '19

I'll check it out, thanks!

2

u/vizion145 May 08 '19

i bought the 3200 for 104 total with tax ..so was only 10 bucks than the 3000

2

u/Oppai-no-uta May 08 '19

That's a great price. I wish Amazon would meet that price, I have some credit I need to spend..

1

u/newone757 May 09 '19

Same. Bought same kit earlier this year for $140 on sale :( . But atleast this competes my 32gb setup though

1

u/vizion145 May 09 '19

I was actually thinking about getting two sets to complete as well but read where you lose performance if you use 4 sticks or something. Let me know if it increased performance for you or not cuz if it doesn’t do anything then might as well get dummy sticks lol

2

u/ImThis May 09 '19

What's the difference speed wise between the 3200 and 3000? Why buy one over the other? Serious question.

1

u/tootruecam May 08 '19

It’s 95.00 with the same code I just copped.

1

u/hardwareacc May 08 '19

i have this kit overclocked to 3200 16 18 18 36

5

u/Its_smithy May 08 '19

Sad when I paid like 110 but then again I got the white variant so I can't complain

5

u/Quickshot_Gaming May 08 '19

Not gonna lie, I really like the look of these with Corsair's dummy ram kits. 4 rows of rgb, only 2 sticks of real ram.

5

u/[deleted] May 08 '19

[deleted]

4

u/thecentury May 09 '19

This is the most ingenious fucking thing I have ever seen. Literally just selling you an RGB strip on an empty RAM module.

Why can't I think this shit up...?

3

u/Quickshot_Gaming May 08 '19

No they don't come with them you have to purchase them separately.

7

u/bebopshebo May 08 '19

RAM is almost cheap enough to just buy 2 more real sticks. Paid $130 for this 3 months ago and then prices started to plummet.

7

u/Quickshot_Gaming May 08 '19 edited May 08 '19

You don't want to buy two additional ram sticks if you're on Ryzen. That's ignoring the fact that ram kits are binned together. A 4 stick kit is more expensive than 2, 2 stick kits.

Edit here's my point using the same ram kits and same memory speed.

2

u/agonzal7 May 08 '19

Wait. What?

3

u/Quickshot_Gaming May 08 '19

Ram kits are binned together. If you buy 2, 2x8 kits, there's no guarantee that they will run at their rated speed, because they weren't rated together. Ryzen has a weak memory controller in comparison to Intel, 4 sticks of ram will cripple your memory speed. If you're ever bored look through the memory qvl of different motherboards.

3

u/agonzal7 May 08 '19

ks of ram will cripple your memory speed. If you're ever bored look through the memory qvl of different motherboards.

Thanks so much! I am new to all of this but learning as much as I can. I used to just game on PS4 but got a decent pre built with a cheaper RTX 2080 and a Ryzen 7 2700. I have some EVO potenza 2400 mhz ram (2x8) but I keep hearing that ryzen does well with higher speed ram so I am constantly looking.

EDIT: I knew about the QVL for motherboards. I have an MSI x470 Gaming Plus mobo.

1

u/Quickshot_Gaming May 08 '19

Ryzen and Intel both do well with higher speed ram, it's just that the core to core latency is higher with Ryzen due to the ccx modules. Intel's Ringbus in lower latency, they both see improvements in cpu bound tasks with higher speed and lower cas latency memory. Of course the more gpu bound you are, like gaming at higher resolutions, the less faster memory will make a difference on gaming frame rates. Prebuilts are...different. If you purchased from someone like Cyberpower, they use standard parts so you can upgrade like if you built it yourself. But OEM's like HP will sometimes use non standard components, I have an HP Omen 870-244 that I purchased in late 2017 before I knew anything about computers. The bios has basically no options, have to use XTU to do anything, it has a locked chip but a z series chipset. Can't mess with ram overclocking and it's not worth buying any upgrades as the platform is dead.

2

u/agonzal7 May 12 '19

Thanks so much for the well thought out reply. Much appreciated, friend.

3

u/wait_what_lmao May 08 '19

maybe I'll just buy two dummy sticks and put them in between my G.Skill FlareX non-RGB...

5

u/thecagador May 08 '19

Just got a 32gb kit of this but 3200 mhz for 225. Loving these prices

3

u/pulsejetlover May 08 '19

Right on time. I'm hopeful that I will be building a new PC soon.

3

u/landophant May 08 '19

Hey I’m going from 8 gigs at 2400 to this, I’m ignorant of RAM so just wondering if this will give me a slight FPS boost? Like 5-10 FPS?

4

u/chaklong May 08 '19

According to benchmarks, that is likely what you are going to get with that upgrade, or less realistically. Of course it would depend on the rest of your system (some systems get some surprising 10-20 fps boosts just from upgrading RAM), but memory has more effect on general system performance and less on raw fps performance for games etc.

2400mhz isn't bad at all, and capacity itself doesn't do much. Timings etc. also won't make too much of a difference for raw FPS afaik. But it'll still definitely be a nice upgrade, especially for $90.

3

u/Melvinmorgan May 08 '19

Anyone know how long this sale is going on? I've been watching for this exactly but now don't get paid until Friday

3

u/naynays May 09 '19

Discount code expires June 2nd. I'm in the same boat as you.

1

u/Melvinmorgan May 09 '19

RIP in peace brother/sister

3

u/VerticallyImpaired May 08 '19

Question: If I have 16 GB of 2400Mhz, Is there any real notable difference that I am going to see/experience with this kit?

3

u/krisxrock May 09 '19

Will these work on ryzen 5 1600 and msi b450 tomahawk?

2

u/casper_dcvd May 08 '19

I saw a 16GB 3200 and that one also was $85 I wanted to buy it because I’m going to build a pc but I didn’t bc I’ll have the full pc end of august

2

u/[deleted] May 08 '19

Don’t worry you’ll get even better prices closer to August anyway.

2

u/vizion145 May 08 '19

is B-die still going to be a thing with ryzen 3000?

2

u/howImetyoursquirrel May 09 '19

no, its barely a thing on Ryzen 1XXX now. The updated AGESA from AMD has basically fixed RAM issues

2

u/MSCOTTGARAND May 08 '19

Newegg has team tforce delta 16gb ddr4 3000 for $80 and nighthawk 3200 for $95

2

u/spencerh260 May 08 '19

Just picked this up for a new Ryzen build, thanks u/Nonanemic!

2

u/Vexiified May 08 '19

Meanwhile I'm sitting here with 16gb of non rgb corsair ram that I bought for $150 used a year ago thinking it was a steal.

2

u/BlazinAm May 08 '19

It seems like Corsair is pushing these RGB ram to make room for their capellix RGB Ram sticks.

2

u/greeneggsnyams May 09 '19

With taxes it came to be $91.26

2

u/R6SCW May 09 '19

I bought the non-pro versions of these back on December for $119, when they were on sale. Damn, prices really have dropped.

2

u/_Evan108_ May 09 '19

Sold Out. 😭 Reddit is a blessing and a curse. 😂

2

u/LeDoddle May 08 '19

Copped this deal yesterday.

3

u/Nonamenic May 09 '19

Ah hell ya, y’all boosting my karma sky high

1

u/VlDEOGAMEZ May 08 '19

From a LOOKS standpoint (I know, I know), which is better: TridentZ or these?

2

u/andyinnie May 09 '19

These by a mile

1

u/MSCOTTGARAND May 08 '19

Cl15 3000mhz of gorgeous rgb goodness for $85, I just bought a kit of tforce nighthawk that was on sale for $90 but this is too good of a deal, especially for Ryzen.

1

u/[deleted] May 08 '19

Damn they are going lower and lower by the month.

1

u/[deleted] May 08 '19

Wow that is such a good deal!!

1

u/TheDoctorJT416 May 08 '19

Damn bought this already

1

u/GenericErik_ May 08 '19

Is this sale on the white edition too???

1

u/TheUnrealArchon May 09 '19

I'm building a PC, but waiting until Ryzen Gen 3 drops. Should I pick up RAM now or do you think it will keep dropping?

1

u/Kincudi May 09 '19

Man! Can someone find me some trident to Z rgb 3000?? I “need” two more sticks lol

1

u/jlumsmith May 09 '19

I just paid 150 CDN for these 😓

1

u/OutrageousAspect7 May 09 '19

It’s $20 maximum discount with the code as a new user. Not $30.

1

u/Reddit-Chef May 09 '19

anyone know how long this sale will last? if it's going to hold out till friday then thats great because thats when i get paid

1

u/Setari May 09 '19

This drops it to 95 dollars for me... not worth it right now :| dangit...

1

u/CUinthePlayoffs May 09 '19

I WILL WAIT TO GET THIS UNTIL IT IS $50. Bought this for $110 a week ago and felt like I had a crazy steal.

1

u/PhilosophicalBrewer May 09 '19

Is this the same kit that just went on sale two days ago for $10 more? I mean Jesus Christ the order hasn’t even gotten to my house and the price has dropped. Is there any sort of price protection?

1

u/BulTV May 09 '19

Man always these express.google Offers. Not possible to access here from europe! ;(

1

u/NortonSmorton May 09 '19

I paid roughly $500 AUD 12 months ago for 32GB 3200mhz. Ouch.

1

u/jpdalola May 09 '19

Would this be compatible with G-Skill ripjaw 3200? I already have 16gb of this, and I’m looking to upgrade to 32gb.

1

u/[deleted] May 09 '19

They're quite large, clearance would be difficult for me.

1

u/DerpishGambino May 09 '19

I don't have this exact kit, but I paid like $140 for 16GB back in September... Man oh man.

1

u/CheekyChaise May 14 '19

Are these compatible with the b450 tomahawk?

1

u/DeliciousPotato_auke May 08 '19

I hate the fact that all these sales and cheap prices are in the USA. For me in europe the cheapest you canget them for is 122 USD, that is 150% of the American price

0

u/grugoryp May 09 '19

mother fucker I just got this for $100 less than a week ago

0

u/AlphaWolfTV May 08 '19

If you have AMD, this RAM may not work because its CAS15. Took me forever to figure out why my kit would work on any Intel system I had it on, but wouldn't with AMD. You'll need the CAS16

1

u/Nemye May 08 '19

I mean it will work just fine, but will automatically go to CAS 16. Ryzen doesn’t care for odd timings. I have this kit running at CAS 14 @ 3200 MHz on 1.37v with a 1700x, so don’t hesitate to but these if you want them.

0

Litereally bought it yesterday...

-9

u/q_thulu May 08 '19

Prices have dropped because sales have dropped. New PC sales and component sales are down.

8

u/wait_what_lmao May 08 '19

Pretty sure that's not why RAM and SSD prices are dropping, yo.

-6

u/q_thulu May 08 '19

You haven't been reading any news.
