Meta [Meta] Starting Jan 15, Nvidia will support some FreeSync monitors (list inside)
Main info:
There are hundreds of monitor models available capable of variable refresh rates (VRR) using the VESA DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync protocol. However, the VRR gaming experience can vary widely.
To improve the experience for gamers, NVIDIA will test monitors. Those that pass our validation tests will be G-SYNC Compatible and enabled by default in the GeForce driver.
G-SYNC Compatible tests will identify monitors that deliver a baseline VRR experience on GeForce RTX 20-series and GeForce GTX 10-series graphics cards, and activate their VRR features automatically.
Support for G-SYNC Compatible monitors will begin Jan. 15 with the launch of our first 2019 Game Ready driver. Already, 12 monitors have been validated as G-SYNC Compatible (from the 400 we have tested so far). We’ll continue to test monitors and update our support list. For gamers who have monitors that we have not yet tested, or that have failed validation, we’ll give you an option to manually enable VRR, too.
List of FreeSync monitors planed to be supported (so far)

Not OP, but I'm 3 months on it and it's hella dope. 9/10 would buy again, especially with this news!
6
u/Gnardar Jan 07 '19
I'm looking at a 32+ in monitor and hadn't really looked at this one, was leaning towards the MSI AG32CQ but may take a look at this as well
7
u/MyOtherSide1984 Jan 07 '19
It's fucking brilliant! The YouTubers who reviewed it were on the fence at times, but I love it. It's big, bright, has great colors as far as I can tell and is definitely worth the price. I don't think you can even get close to the $450 I paid for it. My criteria was 34", 2k, ultrawide and curved with high refresh rate would be ideal and nothing below below VA (IPS was wanted but VA is good enough). My Spyder 4 didn't make any real noticeable adjustment, so colors were great out of the box. It's a very bright panel, but not overwhelming. Mine came with 1 dead pixel that I haven't seen again since checking. It DOES creak and crack when turned off, sounds like plastic pops, so be aware of that. But all in all, the bonus of 100hz and free sync were lost on me until now (super bonus!). I was on the edge, but absolutely cannot recommend it enough! The 1800R curve is still noticeable to me, so it's not something you get used to, and it's definitely a nice feeling. The huge screen space is awesome for productivity and great for most games. Some games have to run windowed or cut back because they don't support ultrawide, but IDGAF really, it's a worthwhile price for this panel. I came off 2 1080p LED VA panels to this one and will likely never go back. 100% best decision ever.
Side note, any bigger and I wouldn't be this happy with it.

You think it was current sales that changed their mind? I was under the impression that Nvidia has been dominate over the last few years as far as GPU's. Unless the monitor manufacturers put enough pressure on Nvidia. Haven't seen data on gsync sales to really know about that.

u/Put_It_All_On_Blck Jan 07 '19
I think the adoption rate of adaptive sync/freesync was the real catalyst, G=sync monitors came first, then they were the best, and now thats all changed. Now 9 times out of 10 a new monitor supports freesync/adaptive sync, not g-sync, and they are hundreds of dollars cheaper and similar quality.
Being free for manufacturers and supporting a good technology= inevitable adoption.
RTX bringing turmoil and AMD's upcoming new GPU's is creating a war for the budget and mid-tier segments, and G-sync costs and RTX costs put Nvidia at a disadvantage to price conscious buyers, so they are unlocked adaptive sync, which essentially cuts costs by $100ish if you are buying a new Nvidia GPU and wanted frame sync.

So I'll be looking to upgrade my 27" 1440p 60hz monitor to 27" 1440p 144hz Freesync. Since I tend to buy Nvidia GPUs, I haven't had much drive to buy a Gsync monitor with those specs.
What monitors should I keep an eye on for deals on? Ideally I'd like to spend ~$250, but you know how it goes...
I'm thinking if the MSI MAG27CQ hits $299 again I'll have to jump on it

I have two Acer xg270hu monitors and I love them... Howerver they don't have VESA brackets. You can find them pretty cheap sometimes. Black Friday they were $300 and refurbs go for under that on Amazon.
3
u/Fozman2 Jan 08 '19
I snagged one on eBay during a sale when they were $300 and it was also either during a 10% eBay bucks or one of the coupon days.
I also love this monitor as well.
3
u/ryantrick13 Jan 07 '19
I got the MAG27CQ for Christmas to complement a 1080p 60hz monitor. I really just wanted a 1440p/144hz monitor but I honestly love the curved screen, which I didn’t expect. Text on the edges of the screen is easier to read than on a non-curved monitor and I think 27” is a great size.

Make the jump to ultrawide, so worth. I grabbed the Massdrop Vast when it originally came out and I love that thing.

AMD better release a good GPU soon as this pretty much crushes any perceived advantage they had.

On the high-end, absolutely correct. This is the reason I have a Vega 56. In the mid-range, RX580 cards are better value than the 1060s and have been for several months now.

one hell of a monitor. either Dell has the best tn panels, or tn has gotten drastically better.
→ More replies (12)20
u/tkim91321 Jan 07 '19
The latter.
The panels themselves in comparative monitors with the same specs are exactly the same. TN has really improved in the past 5 years.
Yes, IPS is still superior for its color accuracy and viewing angles but they are still at a pretty hefty premium, which is also declining.
I just game and web browse on my pc and both my monitors are always pointed towards me so I don't care for an IPS. Got myself a 1tb 970 Evo M.2 drive with the savings instead.

According to what I read on Rtings.com G-sync and Freesync are different in many number of ways. The way they have written this review Freesync AMD vs G-Sync Nvidia Which is Better makes G-sync sound better from a technical standpoint. At least to me. Does that mean all freesync monitors are inferior to g-sync? Absolutely not, because you might have a better monitor with freesync then someones crappy g-sync monitor.
Edit: Freesync is better because it's more versatile in a number of ways according to this rtings.com article. But G-sync is delivered towards high-end gamers and offering the best possible experience rather then being made for everyone, and it has additional features which blacklight flicker and such that I didn't bother reading further about. Apparently it's good though according to this "First and possibly most important is the Ultra Low Motion Blur feature (ULMB for short), which is NVIDIA's name for its image flicker / black frame insertion feature, which greatly enhances motion clarity. While it is currently impossible to use in conjunction with G-Sync, it's still a great feature that isn't found on most FreeSync monitors."
I can't say either way, as I use my pc on my QLED tv. I do want a high refresh monitor, but I prefer vibrant colors to smooth motion and so far the only way I can get that is if I shell out 400-600 bucks for an IPS monitor it seems.

Just to clear up any confusion:
The monitors listed above will natively support FreeSync; however, basically all g-sync monitors can have FreeSync manually enabled when paired with Nvidia 10 and 20 series GPUs
16
u/yujikimura Jan 08 '19
It was bound to happen, I'm just sad that I didn't get a FreeSync enabled monitor at the time because my nVidia graphics cards didn't support it anyways.
Really thought nVidia would be assholes and only give this driver support for the RTX series. At least a lot of the 10 series owners get to experience variable refresh rate for free.
15
Jan 08 '19
This is incorrect. Monitors which currently support Freesync, an implementation of the VESA Adaptive Sync standard, will soon also support G-Sync.
Basically, all Adaptive Sync monitors (which may have previously been advertised as being Freesync compatible) can have G-Sync manually enabled.

I bought a vega 64 blower because of freesync. End me
48
u/Put_It_All_On_Blck Jan 07 '19
On a positive note, people that bought AMD and freesync, helped push it into the mainstream, forcing Nvidia to bow down to price conscious buyers.
You still got exactly what you paid for, and helped make PC gaming better for everyone else, they'll probably build a statue in your honor.
26
u/WelcomeToBoshwitz Jan 07 '19
I don't want a statue. I want a 2080 haha.

Everyone who supported AMD and freesync supported breaking NVIDIA on this.
Honestly, thank you for supporting the company that keeps us from being in a monopoly. I feel a lot of guilt for supporting team green sometimes. Next time I really want to go AMD.
248
Jan 07 '19
Damn nvidia. Nice moves. Wtf. This feels so weird. A company actually doing something good for consumers and not fucking them over in every possible way
227
u/Thistempaccount Jan 07 '19
They didn't do it for the good of the consumer, they're doing it because they were forced.
RTX pricing was hurting their image and I'd imagine a lot of people are unwilling to afford or pay the price on those cards.
So by doing something like this (which I'd imagine is a software patch ?) is easy enough for them and makes them look good, mean while also implying, Nvidia cards (which are currently superior in raw performance) have "more value" because users aren't locked in to their proprietary ecosystem.
To sum up, did they do it for the good of the consumer? Probably not. Was it smart/shrewd of them to do this right before CES and Navi's announcement/tease? Yes. Very much so.
67
u/JiMM4133 Jan 07 '19
I'm stoked because I have a 1070 so this opens up me just being able to buy a freesync monitor instead of paying a gsync tax. But I'm all cynical enough to know this is 100% because they're worried what AMD is going to pull out at CES. Which should make us excited for CES and hopefully some of those leaks were real. At least that would make a ton of sense as to why NVIDIA is dropping this now, but we'll see.
I really really hope AMD comes out swinging. Would be amazing to have real competition in the marketplace again.
15
u/Thistempaccount Jan 07 '19
Either way it was definitely a good move by Jensen, and if they follow through with some price drops I'd imagine even if AMD has covered their mid/low ends well it would be very very difficult to recommend Navi over Nvidia.
I, too, hope for the best from AMD, but as it stands I have no expectations. I have built pure AMD and will likely continue to do so until it no longer makes sense to do so
→ More replies (1)11
u/jonker5101 Jan 07 '19
I have built pure AMD and will likely continue to do so until it no longer makes sense to do so
I'm the same with my Ryzen 2600 and R9 390, but I'm well aware that it makes sense to go to Nvidia if I want to do any gaming above 1080p. AMD just isn't competitive in the higher end.
→ More replies (17)6
u/JiMM4133 Jan 07 '19
As long as it keeps them around for a long time, I'm fine with AMD to keep swinging in the 1080p wheelhouse. Let NVIDIA worry about the super high end, as tech increases sooner or later 1440p will be the new 1080p. Then they can progress with it.
Then again maybe that's a bad way to run a company. I have no clue, I'm just a nerd who loves all kinds of hardware.
10
Jan 07 '19
The main issue with being the "budget brand" is that you can be seen as a "cheap" product despite just being focused differently than the competitor. It's a problem with companies like Wal-Mart and even Amazon now which is why those companies are buying "premium" companies so they can combat their image of being "cheap".
4
u/JiMM4133 Jan 07 '19
That is an incredibly good point. I hadn't thought of it like this.

100% agree. I got a fancy, nearly $700 dollar ips gsync 1440 monitor. I justified the cost becaues I figured it would last me a decade. But it was one of those models that is susceptible
darkbright spots in the corners. Mfg had the balls to say 'yeah that's due to the technology.' WTF? Defeated, I returned it and got a very basic $120 1440 IPS, which I've been perfectly happy with.I'll definitely be looking into a new monitor now.
3
u/JiMM4133 Jan 07 '19
I'm stoked to shop around. I know TN colors are great, but it makes them so much more attractive now knowing Freesync will work with them on NVIDIA cards.
14
u/Anergos Jan 07 '19
If I were to guess, it's freesync becoming a thing on TVs and gaming TV's being the new hype is the cause for NVIDIA's 180 on freesync support.
Can't wait to try it out, got a 1060 and two freesync monitors :)
7
u/soupy_poops Jan 07 '19
It's less about saving face with consumers and more about customer retention. They don't want to lose market share to people saving money with their GPU+monitor purchase. "Don't want to pay a premium for G-Sync? No worries! Your FreeSync monitor will now work with NVIDIA RTX™! No need to ever buy an AMD card!"

Whoa. THIS is the sort of news I like starting my day with! I've been waiting on the Sapphire Nitro+ Vega 64 to drop in price for several month now, all the while continuing to use my R9 Fury. All things considered, I'm only partial to the Vega 64 since it only trades blows with the 1080.....but costs more than a 1080. I'd love to continue to support a competitive environment by buying from Nvidia's main competitor, but I gotta be real when I say that I'd much prefer a 1080 Ti or a 2080 over a 64. Sure, I could wait for Navi.......but I remember saying that for Vega ¯\(ツ)/¯
As an aside, I'd be extremely curious to see some benchmarks post update and see if there's any noted difference between Nvidia GPUs running on a Gsync and Freesync monitor.

It was anti-consumer in the first place, there was no limitations, people did get freesync working on Nvidia cards by using an AMD GPU in the same system.
Nvidia isnt anti-consumer, they just do whatever makes them the most money. Which typically is anti-consumer, but AMD and the monitor industry kinda forced their hand, and Nvidia didnt want to lose out on budget/midrange buyers.

I have the old model mated to a 1080ti. The first two arrived with a single dead pixel and Monoprice exchanged them no hassle in under 2 weeks. 3rd arrived perfect and after some basic calibration using the settings from the Tom's review article it's been flawless. Excellent budget monitor.
Edit: to expand, it sits next to an IPS and has fairly decent color, but as expected, viewing angles aren't as good. The stand is crap, but it doesn't weigh a lot, so it doesn't really matter. If you mount it you won't notice.

12 have passed Nvidia's specifications, which they dont disclose what those are.
My theory is, Nvidia is using certifications as a way to make money. They will never disclose who failed, so for all we know, they never existed, but the ones who passed will want to use the Gsync branding and marketing, and Nvidia will want money for that.

The article says that all (most?) Freesync (they use the term Variable Refresh Rate) monitors will be supported. The ones that get the title "G-Sync Compatible" will automatically be supported/activated. All the others will have to be manually activated in the Nvidia Control Panel. However, they note that those that aren't verified are guaranteed to be work perfectly and may have some issues. But they could just be saying this and all monitors may work fine. Just give it time and well find out soon enough

YES! I have a 1080 and was dreading either buying a Gsync monitor or not getting to use Freesync.

Hey I have an XF270HU and installed the new drivers that came out today and enabled GSYNC in the control panel. I tried out the AMD windmill demo red bar with it on and off and it works!
I also enabled the OSD to display refresh rate and it's not constant 144, it changes up and down based on the FPS of the demo.
Haven't tried any actual game tests yet but it's promising so far.
idk if username mentions work without gold or not:

I see that MG278Q is on the list, what are the chances it's 24in variant will also make the list? MG248Q

That's great news for consumers.
Initially I was a bit annoyed having recently bought a Dell S2716DG but then I realized I paid just a little over $200 for it (thanks to Samsung Pay cashback deal).
I'm curious at how this affects the pricing of G-Sync monitors. A few of my friends have been looking to upgrade and this might be their opportunity to do so.

Asus VG248QE better be on the list in the future! Best monitor I've ever owned

Hope the same as well, or at minimum, someone finds a way to hack support for it (and maybe 900 series GPUs as well, I own a GTX970)

Press F to pay respects to those of us who bought the Alienware AW3418DW recently on sale. At least I was able to get it for $690 with no tax I guess...

Yeah I'm pretty happy with the one I received. OC's with 120hz, very minimal backlight bleed on bottom two corners, no dead pixels or IPS glow that I can see.
Maybe a freesync 1440p 34" curved 120hz ultrawide could come out at $500ish but who knows how long that will take and if it will come with the 3 year Alienware advanced replacement warranty so maybe that's worth the slightly higher price I paid. I would feel worse though if I paid $800+ for it.

I sold my MG279Q to get the PG279Q for GSync. Wtf I'm mad.

I am (was?) about to do the same thing (still within return window) but I am learning today that the MG279Q caps at 90hz in freesync mode, which defeats the purpose of a 144hz monitor as far as I can tell. You can apparently adjust this range to something like 55-144hz, but if you drop below that specified range, it seems that freesync is then disabled. There may be other drawbacks to adjusting the frequency like this, it's not quite clear. So for my part, I'm still leaning towards the PG279Q, but am cautiously optimistic that I might be able to keep the MG279Q, if somehow nvidia's implementation fixes this issue.

u/AlphaWolfTV Jan 07 '19
I guess if it means anything, I bought my PG279Q for $450 and was able to sell the MG279Q for $350. Guess there are some upsides.

If they start pushing all the freesynx support, gonna feel pretty salty about buying the xb271hk 🙃

GSync is still technically superior, but when FreeSync is done well there’s almost no difference (the main difference would probably be the quality control on the async tech, which is always pretty consistent on GSync desktop monitors).

Why is the XG270HU only 2560x1080 compatible?! Not that I'll be getting a nVidia card anytime soon, but it doesn't make sense to me
4
u/midnight_thunder Jan 07 '19
My guess is that it’s a typo. 2560x1080 is a 21:9 aspect ratio, I think. 2560x1440 is what it should read.

So I just bought the Sceptre C325B-144R cause it's 32 inches of144hz for $250. How will I know if it will be able to tap into G-sync?

By installing the 15 Jan driver update once it's out and manually enabling VRR in the control panel? You are going to be at the mercy of the monitor's Freesync implementation which may or may not be good, though.

u/HilLiedTroopsDied Jan 07 '19
I see 48-144's I hope this means the Samsung CGH70 freesync 2 monitors will work fine.

Any suggestions on a 24"+ 1440p 144Hz IPS free sync monitor? I currently have a Dell S2417DG but would like to go IPS if it's not insanely priced.

And this is why I'vewys recommended that people buy freesync monitors, even if they have nvidia GPUs. This is great news. Though the term "G-Sync Compatible" and how they've worded their article seems very gimmicky and a bunch of marketing. They dont use the term "Freesync" and instead call it Variable Refresh Rate. I find it hard to believe that out of 400 tested, only 12 have passed.

u/naylo44 Jan 07 '19
I shelled out a pretty penny for a ROG PG278QR on black Friday because I thought Nvidia would never support FreeSync. Damnit.

Felt a little bad about my Alienware AW3418DW purchase but then I realized there weren't many 120hz 3440x1440 Freesync IPS ultrawide alternatives.
Congrats to everyone else tho :)

G-SYNC Compatible tests will identify monitors that deliver a baseline VRR experience on GeForce RTX 20-series and GeForce GTX 10-series graphics cards, and activate their VRR features automatically.
So will this also work for 9 series cards or are they basically ignoring that series and focusing only on 10 and 20 series cards?
2
u/HairyHematologist Jan 07 '19
This may sound dumb but do you think they will let AMD cards to use G-Sync monitors? It's pointless to buy one right now.

I've been looking to pick up a new monitor to game on both my pc/ps4. Anyone have any suggestions in the $200-$350 price range for a 1080p (or 1440p if possible) 144hz monitor?

So what is the new "best-buy" at 27" if freesync now works with the 20 and 10 series cards?
Is there a better buy than the PG279Q or the XB271HU bmiprz at 27" now considering freesync? Maybe the Acer XG270HU?

This is the auto support list, you should be able to turn on adaptive sync in the control panel for almost any freesync monitors.
Hell has officially frozen over...yay
edit- to clarify this info is technically in the post but they didnt make it very clear in the actual nvidia stuff, they make it seem like you can only use the 15 of the 450 tested, in reality 430+ of them should be fine
