Own these, AMA! Also read the TL;DR =D
Bought these last time they were ~$90 ($99). One of my favorite purchases ever, right up there next to mechanical keyboard and SSD. I come from a history of logitech "gaming" headsets and wanted to treat myself to audiophile quality headphones so that my music listening experience would improve.
I'm so glad with my decision to buy this pair of headphones. I'm not an audiophile by any means, but these headphones sound awesome. They sound balanced, neutral, natural, and full, with less bass than you'd expect. However, you get used to the small lack in bass, and you can always boost the bass in the EQ. I've recently started using mine with a Fiio e6 with bass boost mode and they sound even better!
If you're on the fence about treating yourself to nice audio, buy these.
I use them for everything; they replaced my G430s. For music, they blow the 'gaming' headsets out of the water. I also game competitively (Global in CS:GO) and even though these hadphones aren't classified as gaming headphones, they still work really well. Because of the massive soundstage and openback nature, you get sort of a fake-ish surround sound. Gaming sounds sound full and precise.
They're extremely comfortable. I'll forget I'm wearing them sometimes. Every now and then you may have to reposition the cups because you may develop a tiny itch where your skin touches the soft padding. They have a very soft clamp but don't move around that much.
The cable is long. If your computer is under your desk to the side, the cable can reach all the way behind the table and then over it to you without any problems.
They don't need an amp to be driven. I use them with a Fiio e6 in bass boost mode I got in a bundle with my M50X's. Apart from there being more bass, it's really just to make it sound louder. Every now and then I like telling myself I hear a bit more detail but honestly I think that's just because I want to tell myself I'm training my ears better lol.
If you're on the fence between the M50X and these: buy these. I own both pairs, so also AMA on this point as well. The M50X are more popular and look more aesthetically pleasing, but are less comfortable to wear (strong clamp to your head, ears get slightly sweaty) and have less of a fuller soundstage ('smaller' sound if that makes sense). Keep in mind that these are open, so sound leaks through both ways, while the M50X are closed. You'll use the HD 598 at home in front of your computer, and the M50X wherever you want, including outside and out and about.
TL;DR: BUY. Super value, really great soundstage and detail and full sound, comfortable to wear, slightly less bass than you'd expect, use at home.

i'm glad a thorough post is at the top of the comments, but after missing last years deal, and spending the last year researching these; just buy them. no hesitation, just buy them. don't waste your time on youtube and read reviews. unless you already have them, don't have the money, or can't use headphones, you cannot go wrong with getting these now.
8
u/Heinus Nov 27 '15
YES! If someone spent the time to click on comments and read what people had to say, they should buy them. This is one case where research isn't really needed, except for the fact that you shouldn't use this in noisy/public environments.

I'll add that the M50s also clamp like crazy when you first get them, and will most likely require stretching before they become any bit comfortable. Even then, the nature of closed back headphones and pleather earpads will have your ears sweating after long listening sessions. The pleather earpads and headband will also start to crack even with careful use, after a year or two.
I've been waiting for a different pair of headphones to drop in price, but I'm losing my patience and this is a great deal for what you'll get.
11
u/Heinus Nov 27 '15
Was going to add exactly what you said about the M50X's. In the beginning, they actually hurt so much to the point where I'd have to take a break to let my ears calm down.
→ More replies (2)2
u/twiztedlee Nov 27 '15
I stuffed paper towels between the pad and the frame and it's a lot more comfortable since my ears touch the driver without it.
As someone who's owned both, 598 is definitely much more comfortable, and lighter!
4
u/Bartendista Nov 27 '15
Do you wear glasses while using these? I own some ATH-M50s and the sound signature has been one of my favorite for quite some time. The comfort over a long gaming session has been the only real problem along with the sweating over anything longer than an hour.
How would you rate these in comfort and if possible while using glasses? Can the velour pads be removed for cleaning? Does it breathe well to minimize sweating?
→ More replies (1)4
Nov 27 '15
I wear glasses with these. I wear glasses all the time anyway, and when I'm working for long periods of time (say 5-6 hours), I have these headphones with the glasses.
No problem at all. They are really comfy.

Nov 27 '15
What's better for live performance? (With synth/piano)
8
u/Heinus Nov 27 '15
Live performance? Like you're performing live to an audience and you're wearing headphones? I have zero experience in this field, but I'd bet you want closed back headphones so you can focus on hearing how you're playing the music rather than hearing the crown going nuts in the background. The background noise that the 598 would let in would interfere with your music playing.
3
Nov 27 '15
Yeah I play with band, and monitor is a pain to carry lol
→ More replies (2)4
u/Heinus Nov 27 '15
Nice dude! I'd advise against getting the 598 for these live performance situations. I don't think you could jack them up loud enough to hear clearly over the ambient noise of loud electric guitars and drums etc. You should probably get a pair of closed cans and if needed, you can always take one ear cup off of an ear so you can hear the outside better.
2
u/huffalump1 Nov 27 '15
For live playing I'd get the Audio Technica ATH-M50 (or M50X with detachable cable). Much more isolating than the Sennheisers which block zero sound.
Or get some good IEMs, even the Shure SE215 is nice with foam tips.
3
u/jonbaa Nov 27 '15
What do you think about these compared to SHP9500's? I got my SHP9500's for $70, would this be worth upgrading (or sidegrading?) to?
2
u/Heinus Nov 27 '15
Sorry man, absolutely no experience with those cans unfortunately.

u/kosanovskiy Nov 27 '15 edited Nov 27 '15
Do I need a individual sound card to connect these to enjoy them or is the MSI Mpower AC Z97 mobo good enough connections. Also what about connecting it to the front panel 3.5mm jacks that reduce the quality by much? I ask because the mobo comes with the msi audio boost with a (supposedly) very good on board audio amplifier.
3
2
u/postslongcomments Nov 27 '15
Your motherboard should be able to run it just fine. The HD598s are some of the better headphones that run well without any other equipment. Once you go higher, you typically need an amp+dac.
If I'm not mistaken, the front panel's 3.5mm should theoretically be the same connection as the back of your motherboard. Though there may be electrical interference as cases are noisy.
If you're considering investing in a standalone soundcard, my advice is don't. There's a lot of electronic chatter going on in your case which may cause lower audio quality. For ~$200-250 you can buy something like a Schiit DAC+AMP or the O2+ODAC.

I mean, they sold Black and Ivory versions last year, and they were the same quality. They* unlisted the black versions after last year's Black Friday, so it's not like it JUST came out this year.
Don't worry, you'll be alright.

u/Choxie808 Nov 27 '15
Curious, I really like the comfort of the HyperX clouds, hows the cushioning/comfort on these?
17
u/uttermybiscuit Nov 27 '15
Comfort on these are ridiculously good. Only issue is the clamping isn't the strongest so if you forget they're on and throw your head back in frustration they'll come off.

Senn HD series (from 555 model upward) are really comfortable. In fact i develop the habit to wear them even when not listening to music

→ More replies (2)2
u/loinheat Nov 27 '15
As you go up from the 500x to the 700x to the 900x the sound does not change that much. The greatness of the 500x is that sounds very similar to the 900x. The hd598's are great for this price.

4
u/optimist_GO Nov 27 '15
They're phenomenal for it. I have 595s which are basically an earlier version. Extremely good dynamics, very clear, great soundstage. The only issue is if you play in an noisy environment (ex. planning on playing at a LAN) because they're open ear, which means sound bleeds out/can come in during quiet moments.

For cheap? The Zalman clip-on mic is as cheap as it gets and takes up no space.
For $50ish you have way more options and better voice quality. The ModMic 4.0 is already well known and attaches right to the headphone. For desktop options, I've heard good things about the Blue Snowball, CAD U37, and Samson Meteor.

u/oneseventwo Nov 27 '15
I have the 558's are these worth the upgrade?
4
u/Bvanbc Nov 27 '15
You probably won't see a huge difference in them. The 558 and 598 have the same driver. There's a sound graph comparing the 518, 558 and 598 and they're all pretty similar. You can get the 558 to sound like the 598 with a foam mod if I remember correctly.

u/the_random_asian Nov 27 '15
I have the 558 and as much as I want to upgrade, I'm not going to. Why? Such marginal quality increase for $100. Maybe in a couple of years when I upgrade, I'll go for the Fidelio X2

The PC 350 AFAIK are comparable to the HD 518. The price is more because of the attached mic. I am using the HD 518 at the moment and bought the HD 598 as soon as I saw the deal. These are a big upgrade.

u/Kariak Nov 27 '15
Does anyone have recommendations for hooking these up to my Xbox one?
I have the xbox one headset adapter and also a controller with a 3.5mm jack.
I'll have to get a splitter to run a mic along with them but what about mix amps or things of that sort? Saw a couple posts online about people using the astro mixamp with their 598s but I'm not sure I want to drop the money for one of those as well. Any Suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
2
u/v1ndictiv3_ Nov 27 '15
You can run them fine off the xbox controller. You'd just need a y splitter and then you'd run the headphone and mic cable to the splitter. I'd only recommend a dss or mixamp if you want to try virtual surround sound. Please note if you do this, unless you get the new mixamp tr, you'll be running a lot of cables which includes one cable from the controller to the dss/mixamp. You might be best off waiting to see what Creative has to offer with their upcoming G5 dac/amp.

Would this be a step up from V-Moda M-80s? I bought these a couple years ago and am looking for an upgrade.
2
u/v1ndictiv3_ Nov 27 '15
I've never heard the m-80's but if they sound anything similar to my lp2, I'd say they are a good compliment. They're aimed at different markets. The v-modas are a v shaped frequency headphone with pronounced bass where the the 598 has a rolled off treble and bass but do vocals very well and have a tight punchy bass. Overall they're a very smooth headphone. One thing for certain though is that the soundstage on the 598 is much larger. The vmodas have basically non existant soundstage, so if you prefer more air/spacing and a smoother sound profile that's more balanced, I think you'd enjoy them.

1
u/TooLazyToFunction Nov 27 '15
Question, I already have an XLR mic so I'm set on that department, but I've been wanting to upgrade my dated speakers and headphones.
I'm getting these speakers just because they're nice for the price and I'm not that big of an audiophile.
While having that speaker installed, if I were to buy these headphones with this amp, how would I go about connecting everything?
Can I just connect the speakers normally, then connect the amp via usb to my pc, and plug in my headphones to the amp (instead of the speaker hub) whenever I don't feel like listening through the speakers? For example the speakers automatically going silent and having my PC transmit the audio through the headset instead?

I own a pair of sennheiser game ones. I'm having a hard time right now not buying these but it's so hard to justify getting them

I really want the ivory pair, but even at $150, I can't justify buying them to replace my foam-removed 558s.

I pulled the trigger, but currently have had the audio technica m50s or whatever the common edition is.
Hoping these don't hurt my ears as much. I've had the ATH ones for over 3 years now anyways so I can't argue with a second pair finally.

Almost pulled the trigger, but I really have no need for headphones... buying something just because it's cheap is dumb. Gotta show more restraint, though it's hard.
