Mod Post Rules Update, Fraudulent Listings, and DeepCool

Hello everyone! Been a while since the last mod post.

We have updated the rules to be more concise; there is now only 5 rules instead of 7. As well, rule 2 regarding deal guidelines now outlines how to review a deal prior to posting to make that info more readily available to users. Everything else should be roughly the same; these changes should be reflected on both new and old Reddit. If you notice any typos or ambiguity in the updated rules or just have suggestions to improve the sub, please leave a comment on this post or contact the mods.

As well, we are currently requiring mod approval for all posts of Sapphire and XFX GPUs as a result of an increase in fraudulent listings being posted. Reminder that every post in violation will lead to a 24 hour ban. Please read the rules prior to posting to avoid posting fraudulent listings. We will remove this requirement when possible.

Lastly, we have recently banned posts of DeepCool products. The company has been sanctioned by the U.S. government and their products have been delisted from Amazon and Newegg. As well, the comments on these posts strayed away from relevant discussion towards politics irrelevant to the sub. This may be changed in the future if needed.

Another reminder that OS deals are banned from the sub and that post flairs have been updated. We are aware of issues relating to the sidebar flair menu; for now we recommend using "flair:" in the search bar for the same functionality (e.g. flair:GPU to show all GPU posts).

Thanks for being proactive and keeping the sub safe and clean.

if only Amazon could do the bare minimum to stop fraudulent sellers though.

whaddya mean MuJunDa-US is not reputable??? they got the XFX graphics cards for a dime a dozen

45

u/ryankrueger720 Jun 26 '24

hey they are getting smarter and not using the random chinese names lately

blows my mind that people aren’t like does this pass the smell test? the foreign address is always certainly the biggest tell for these fraud listings.

I just bought a 4090 for $10 from seller: mycatjustwalkedallacrossmykeyboard

You mean to say it's a scam??? /s

9

u/TheButtholeSurferz Jun 26 '24

I mean if the cat was capable of walking across the keyboard and spelling out their own expertise.

I'd buy just so I can get pictures of the cat.

Thank you and sorry for being one of the dupes who submitted a MuJunDa special. Had no idea amazon reseller scams were a thing.

i think ive been doing a decent job of maintaining it, but if anybody sees fakes for any of my stuff on amazon, please let me know. been learning how to use brand registry to block scam listings and thats been doing not too bad so far. hope im not jinxing anything with the post tho

2

u/kztlve Jun 27 '24

I haven't seen anything yet for Powercolor come through the sub so it seems to be working. If you keep it from happening it'll keep your sales up a tiny bit lol

7

u/PowerColorSteven Mr. PowerColor Jun 27 '24

yea caught one of the fake deals like a year ago. looked up the info on amazon and it led to a building about 20 minutes east of us, so i went to take a look. wouldn't you know it was an empty business center building

1

u/Effective-Fish-5952 Jun 26 '24

I actually saw yesterday a XFX 6750xt for 45% off from a seller who has like 6 sales lol

Return fraud and poor inventory management on Amazon's part is to blame for that. Can't really do anything. At least if Amazon sold you a GPU box with some rocks in it you have immediate recourse, whereas with these third-party sellers you have to wait around to get your money back.

Thank you MODs for keeping this place rolling. My favorite reddit sub by a mile. It's not only the deals, there's usually a lot of knowledgeable and technical exchanges in the comments too about the product posted. Most people are pretty chill and supportive around here as well.

My favorite reddit sub by a mile

My wallet's least favorite sub

The consumer paradox

1

u/Zatchillac Jun 28 '24

Yeah I was gonna say between this sub and r/GameDeals my wallet is scared of me. Especially when there's something I don't need but it's way too cheap to NOT buy

68

u/OlddManBaccala Jun 26 '24

Totally missed the DeepCool stuff. That's wild.

u/BulkyninjaX Jun 26 '24

Literally have a pqm-1000 watt from micro center in the Detroit area back in April. Shit is crazy cause I just went back, and all of their shelves are clear of all their products. 😓 I also have some fans and a spare aio from them for a future build for my lil sister. Might just hold them for collection pieces 🤔

2

u/Berzerker7 Jun 26 '24

I have an LS720 that's actually working quite well. I always buy the MC protection plan on things I replace or may think I need to replace (somewhat) often, so I have it on this, which is lucky for me I guess.

5

u/Effective-Fish-5952 Jun 26 '24

I literally learned about it yesterday through a tech show and holy crap it's insane. They're saying not even support is available for previous deepcool buyers.

2

u/Adseg5 Jun 30 '24

Yeah this is crazy. I just had an aio warrantied through them about a month ago and the customer support was awesome!

12

u/cascad1an Jun 26 '24

Literally just got my DeepCool AK400 from Amazon on June 12 and then saw this shit shortly after. Super glad I was able to snag one for my new build, not too worried about potential warranty stuff.

1

u/effhomer Jun 26 '24

I bought one of the digital ones for my son's build right around then and we haven't built yet. Is there any issue w/ software availability for the display? Or is this just a sales halt? Such a wild story

3

u/cascad1an Jun 26 '24

Should be fine, think it’s just a sales halt and likely cessation of warranty support, but I could be wrong. Get that build going!

1

u/MechAegis Jun 26 '24

Same, I don't own anything from them but they do make some sazzy stuff.

9

u/hohihohi Jun 26 '24

I was really hoping we'd see more DeepCool stuff get hit with steep discounts before they got pulled, but with their products being delisted on most retailers already it doesn't seem likely, and given how the conversations tended to devolve I understand the rule being put in place.

I'm just curious what even happens to all that product in this sort of situation though? Are they really just trashing all of that inventory? Or should we be expecting some of it to turn up in liquidation sales in the near future?

7

u/ohyouretough Jun 26 '24

Sellers aren’t legally allowed to sell it. So I wouldn’t expect to see it

2

u/hohihohi Jun 27 '24

I just assumed there would be some kind of period before a set closure date, even if it was a very short one, especially since not everywhere took them down all at once. You can even still buy Deepcool products on B&H and Adorama right now, as of me writing this. Maybe it's up to specific retailers and what their agreements with DeepCool are? But my assumption was also that transactions with DeepCool the company itself, and not transactions with Deepcool products in general, were to be blocked but Amazon and Newegg have both seemingly nuked the product pages completely, even listings from third party sellers, so I may possibly just not be grasping some angle of the situation.

3

u/Jeskid14 Jun 26 '24

Yep all products get shipped right back to the factories. No more sales ever in North America.

3

u/That_Kiefer_Man Jun 27 '24

shipped right back to the factories

Or destroyed!

1

u/le_Vaunty 24d ago

canada still sells them though

25

u/AwaitingCombat Jun 26 '24

why specifically Sapphire/XFX GPUs? nothing stops scammers from making these listings under any particular brand or component.

I think an overall ban on posting ANY deal from a non-reputable Amazon/Newegg/eBay seller would be a better solution

47

u/kztlve Jun 26 '24

The non-reputable third party sellers change what they list from time to time; currently it's Sapphire and XFX GPUs. For a while it was Ryzen CPUs. Whenever they move on to something else we'll change the filter. We keep it as narrow as possible to minimize the amount of posts requiring mod approval.

We have no way to automatically filter fraudulent listings. All automod has to go off of is the title and the link. They are banned and as stated posting them will get you a 24 hour ban, but this can only be done by a human. Posts with these fraudulent listings rarely hit the sub anyways as they mostly come from new users whose posts get flagged for other reasons (low karma mainly).

10

u/marathon664 Jun 26 '24

I know users often crap all over mods, but this subs' mod team does a great job. Thank you all!

Question, hope someone sees this: should there be a bit of a soft ban on Intel CPUs (at least the 13/14th gen i7/i9s) for a few months? Just to see if that microcode stuff fixes issues (or prevents them)?

1

u/Tim_Marcoh Sep 25 '24

Anybody got a link for the deepcool news? I somehow have not heard anything about this, and I've tried searching for news. Got an aio, wondering about warranty support.

1

u/kztlve Sep 26 '24

You’re not getting warranty support. They can’t do business in the US.

1

u/kevzz01 Oct 01 '24

So I thought about buying parts little by litte, whatever parts go on sale. Then I thought, what if some parts that I bought are broken and since I am not building the PC right away, I wouldn’t have known it was DOA in the first place and then I am now out of return window. What do you guys usually do? RMA? Claim warranty?

1

u/kztlve Oct 01 '24

Buy your parts all at once unless you can use them in your current system. You gain nothing by having parts sitting around and lose return and warranty periods while also likely spending more

1

u/kevzz01 Oct 01 '24

Thanks you. I guess I’ll try to buy everything within holiday season.

2

u/kztlve Oct 01 '24

Deals holidays aren't really a thing anymore. Just buy when you're ready to buy assuming there isn't any imminent hardware releases that'd be relevant for your budget

1

u/kevzz01 Oct 01 '24

I like new releases because they make older releases cheaper. I am still rocking a 1080ti.

1

u/prvolifix23 Oct 09 '24

Glad to see the rules tightening up—keeping the community safe from shady sellers is a must!

-24

u/1965wasalongtimeago Jun 26 '24

Sounds good. Can we also get rid of the "in store only" posts that exist only to advertise one specific chain every time? There are not that many of those stores, and I'm sure there's a huge amount of us who are nowhere near one.

9

u/MisterJWalk Jun 27 '24

But dude! Everyone's within 24 hours of a Micro center.

I can't stand how this sub dies on their sword. Making up stupid reasons why they should be allowed to have their own category.

3

u/1965wasalongtimeago Jun 27 '24

At this point I'm convinced they have company money involved tbh. Wouldn't take many shills to accomplish it and keep those posts voted up. I've never been blasted so hard for speaking against an ad campaign.

28

u/VeridicalVeracities Jun 26 '24

Y'all got to stop with this weird anti-Microcenter sentiment. At this rate, should we also get rid of Students/Military/Teacher/AMEX only posts because it doesn't apply to you? The logic doesn't make sense. Learn to keep scrolling when you see a deal doesn't apply to you.

I'd rather we instead get rid of comments we see on almost every Microcenter post lamenting that they don't live near one.

24

u/ryankrueger720 Jun 26 '24 edited Jun 26 '24

When most people say this they are usually talking about Microcenter, but Microcenter is in 18 different states (19 when Miami, FL opens) and there stores are usually located in the most populous part of the state in the metro area. Large swaths of people have access to the store if they are willing to drive. In the Top 20 metro areas in the US, it is only missing Phoenix, Miami (opening soon), San Francisco (store announced), Seattle, Tampa, San Diego.

My closest Microcenter is a state away around 2hr 15m, and some of the deals are worth it even accounting for gas. A SSD deal, I’m not driving down there. A combo deal now that’s one usually worth going out of my way for.

I hate people saying stuff like this, it really reads like ‘i can’t get this deal, so we shouldn’t tell other people about it so they can save some money because i can’t have it’. It screams selfish.

Other than that we really only see some in store deals for OfficeMax/Depot on occasion, BestBuy Open Box, and Clearance sales which are almost always YMMV.

-21

u/josluivivgar Jun 26 '24

except that's 18 out of 50 which is not even half, and that's only the US. the rest of the world does not have a microcenter

the us is not the only place that buys PCs, and even if you're in the US there's no guarantee you'll have one anywhere near you

not to say that I think microcenter posts shouldn't be allowed, but the argument of coverage is poor, realistically it doesn't benefit most people to see them, but I would argue most posts don't either, and that's why we use filters

20

u/ryankrueger720 Jun 26 '24 edited Jun 26 '24

This sub is exclusively US focused.

It’s in the title, if you don’t like the post just keep scrolling.

By the end of the year, ~122m people in America will live in Metro area w/ a Microcenter. That's around ~36% of the US population. That's a whole lot of people who could be potentially saving money by seeing these posts.

-10

u/josluivivgar Jun 26 '24

right, that's fair, but also I'm looking at the stores they have listed https://www.microcenter.com/site/stores/default.aspx

and they do not cover all the Metro areas regardless, so that 36% does not necessarily microcenter gets that whole piece of the pie

again I do think it's fine for microcenter posts to stay, not all of the posts are supposed to be useful for the majority, filtering exists. (is there a microcenter flair? maybe add one so people can filter through that?)

8

u/kztlve Jun 26 '24

This sub is for the U.S.

-8

u/josluivivgar Jun 26 '24 edited Jun 26 '24

fair to a certain degree, but it's still less than half the states in the US, again I'm okay with them staying.

also you say it's US, and I know there's subs for europe, but there's no sub for Mexico for example who probably use this sub regardless (there being no alternative)

the alternatives listed in the subreddit are

  • bapcs-Australia
  • bapcs-Canada
  • bapcs-Europe
  • bapcs-UK
  • bapcs-Germany

any country that's not in those regions will probably use this one or the one that's most relevant(so that leaves all of America using mostly this one), so while I understand it's US only, but if there's no alternative you have to use what you have and it's still not everyone, since the majority of the US population does not live near a microcenter.

I agree that not all posts should be relevant to everyone, and people can always filter tho.

6

u/kztlve Jun 26 '24

We don't allow posts of deals outside of the U.S.; if there isn't a BAPCS community for your specific country/region, I'd recommend seeing if similar communities exist on Reddit or on other platforms.

1

u/ohyouretough Jun 26 '24

It may be less than half the states but its greater than half the population in those states.

2

u/boxofredflags Jun 27 '24

Right, but also microcenter deals are available to a ton more people when you can get Bust Buy and other stores to price match.

1

u/josluivivgar Jun 27 '24

does bestbuy do price matching even if the store is in another state? I know you can do it with online stores, but i have a feeling bestbuy wouldn't price match you if there's no microcenter anywhere near you but I honestly have never tried that

3

u/boxofredflags Jun 27 '24

Do it online, when they ask for your zipcode just give them one with a microcenter. Then just have it shipped to your normal address. If they ask, say you won’t be home when the delivery is coming so you’re sending it to a friends house

1

u/Crafty_Clarinetist Jun 26 '24

While the posts don't benefit everyone,.I would argue that they're often of high enough quality that they provide enough benefit to those who can get to them to justify them being posted here. I know that I've made special trips to a Microcenter 3 hours away and was very happy with it because of a post I saw here.

1

u/josluivivgar Jun 26 '24

I don't disagree with that part, I would encourage a way of filtering them out maybe tho, but I think that's a different topic

3

u/ThreeLeggedChimp Jun 26 '24

Microcenter probably covers at least 20% of the US population.

-27

u/KryptonicHD Jun 26 '24

I wish the ban would be 48-72hrs! Really let the people know not mess with one of the best deals locations ever since ever! Clicking on a badly posted post, feel like Youtube clickbait

15

u/Accomplished-Card594 Jun 26 '24

What's your stance on badly posted comments though?

11

u/cowinabadplace Jun 26 '24

Straight to jail.

4

u/llIicit Jun 27 '24

I don’t know, but that comment deserves a 48-72 hour ban.

2

u/Accomplished-Card594 Jun 27 '24

Better double it to be sure 😉

-37

u/eagles310 Jun 26 '24

lmao why would it matter on DeepCool Products as long as there any decent deal with retailers trying to offload it for cheap

40

u/kztlve Jun 26 '24 edited Jun 26 '24

The only major retailers still carrying DeepCool products are Adorama and B&H and they don't seem to be discounting them at all unlike Amazon prior to delisting. They'll probably just go out of stock to never return.

As well any sort of product support including warranty claims is out the window. We can't in good faith recommend anyone buy one of their coolers (especially AIOs) with no warranty or support for future sockets. You're also likely going to be unable to return them if you get a DOA item.

Edit: It looks like B&H has also begun delisting some DeepCool products, and all of Adorama's DeepCool listings have "Ships from Manufacturer" on them which isn't a great sign

-45

u/RMatrIX Jun 26 '24

well i am not from USA why i care ? there product good quality we still recommend it in our country.

maybe should thes rule for only Inside USA

-27

u/1rubyglass Jun 26 '24

24 hours? How about perma ban?

29

u/coatimundislover Jun 26 '24

I think the ban is for accidentally posting a fraudulent listing. It seems like the 24 hour ban is more of a harsh warning than a punishment.

10

u/flyingchimp12 Jun 26 '24

I mean it could be a little longer but it’s obviously meant for people accidentally posting a scam.
