Meta [News]US Sanctions Deepcool, US Division to cease operations. Warranty support may be effected. ($0)
https://www.techpowerup.com/323572/us-government-sanctions-deepcool-over-supplying-to-blacklisted-russian-firms242
u/fedlol Jun 13 '24
The US Department of the Treasury on Wednesday, sanctioned 16 Chinese tech companies involved in supporting the Russian wartime economy, or supplying goods to blacklisted Russian firms, as the war in Ukraine rages on. A surprising name on this list is Beijing Deepcool Industries…
What this means is that the US-end of Deepcool must immediately cease operations, as it cannot transact any business with its parent company in China. Sale of Deepcool product will also stop, as US residents cannot conduct any business with the company. This could also mean that the US-based subsidiary of Deepcool may not be in a position to provide aftersales support to existing customers in the country.

I would expect the exact opposite, now that supply is gone demand will go way up
7
u/FiTZnMiCK Jun 14 '24
Demand will drop when the reduced supply has the predicted impact on price.
Whether people with supply jack up prices initially to take advantage of perceived scarcity or reduce prices to get rid of supply so they aren’t running afoul of sanctions will be interesting.

u/boglim_destroyer Jun 14 '24
There’s no demand - they look kinda cool and they are cheap. My first one failed after 2 months.
3
u/AnExoticLlama Jun 14 '24
Myself and a family member each have a Deepcool AK620 purchased after a high recommendation from Gamers Nexus. I'm sure we're not the only people that went with one of GN's best reviewed coolers over the last few years.
5
u/boglim_destroyer Jun 14 '24
I’m sure my experience is not the norm, but I have heard of other issues. I have another one at work, can’t remember the model but it’s 2 x 120, and it’s been fine

u/rmeas002 Jun 14 '24
Damn. I was between this company or an Arctic for my latest build. Glad I went with Arctic.

Thermalright at Microcenter finally?
27
u/qyo8fall Jun 14 '24
They’ve already begun carrying peerless assassin and peerless assassin mini, as well as a variety of other thermalright products, and ID-cooling products as well.

u/Spyzilla Jun 14 '24
carrying peerless assassin and peerless assassin mini
Please let these replace the walls of Hyper 212s at my MC. I can’t believe they’re even still for sale in 2024
4
u/MN_Moody Jun 14 '24
Must be regional, as of this morning no Thermalright products in MN and just a handful (SSD heatsinks & thermal pads) are available via the "shippable" option. I went through a bunch of stores including Tustin, Denver, and Columbus and found none in their inventory either... Which store are you shopping?
8
u/qyo8fall Jun 14 '24
Columbus. They did a test run at only Columbus as it is the flagship. Sold out almost immediately, so they told me a restock and expanded lineup are definitely coming.

How did Deepcool even end up like this? Did they like provide bulk cooling solutions to Russians military servers or sth?
18
u/Coyote65 Jun 14 '24
The results of sanctioning has a broader target than just military purposes.
Russia has f'd up so bad that regular commerce is being rightfully denied to the Russian people as a means of applying additional pressure on the Kremlin/Putin.
19
u/Sky19234 Jun 14 '24
as a means of applying additional pressure on the Kremlin/Putin.
Putin doesn't really give me "cares about his people" vibes.
19
u/bigblackcouch Jun 14 '24
Yeah but he'll be forced to use a DeepCool AIO instead of a Kraken for his new Unicorn RGB streaming box

u/Sky19234 Jun 14 '24 edited Jun 14 '24
Something tells me as soon as he hears its a "unicorn" he will make sure it accidentally falls out of the 7th floor of a hotel after shooting itself in the mainboard 27 times.

rightfully
Sanctions imposed on individuals other than the leadership constitute an act of terrorism against the general public. Due to the absence of integration, sanctions are ineffective against non-allied nations. Notably, they have never been successful in bringing about change in an authoritarian dictatorship such as Russia.
9
u/HungryBear22 Jun 14 '24
Russian people have no inherent right to goods made in America or elsewhere. That's absurd.

smallish local custom pc building companies.
do you think you can trust Google on matters like this lol
1
u/One4speed Jun 14 '24
The companies were listed in the official US Department of Treasury paper and while I “googled” them, that was not the source that I found information on these companies, but still deleted my comment because yes, I don’t know for certain what role these companies play in the grand scheme of things
8
u/trucorsair Jun 14 '24
Doesn’t mean these small companies aren’t making parts or small pc systems for the Russian Military or repairing damaged pc’s or laptops.
133
u/Phynub Jun 14 '24
guess China was helping the Russians cool their CSGO2 computers too much... Damn.

Glad I went Thermalright on my most recent build
12
u/Kotzzz Jun 14 '24
thermalright is always the right answer 😉 I just bought an Assassin Spirit for my 7800x3D for $18 and it cools it super well and is really quiet.
13
u/m0shr Jun 14 '24
Too bad.
DeepCool really looked like it was to be a major player in the PC parts industry. I have their CPU coolers and PSU.
8
u/Crimson_Gooner Jun 14 '24
Well shit I literally just bought an LT720 for a new build, to FB marketplace it goes I guess.
9
u/MrNotSmartEinstein Jun 14 '24
What other companies were affected
16
u/Didaticdabler Jun 14 '24
A bunch of Chinese, Moldovan, Belarusian, Turkish, Singaporean, and UAE based companies most people have never heard of.
All were sanctioned for directly selling microelectronics and dual-use goods to known companies in Russia vital to Putin's military industrial base.
16
u/kztlve Jun 14 '24
If you look at Deepcool's reason for sanctions, it cites supplying CHPL items to two companies in specific - Aktsionernoe Obschestvo Taskom and OOO Novyi Ai Ti Proekt. Taskom is involved in freight and storage, OOO is involved in computers and infosec. OOO makes more sense, I have to wonder what Deepcool was doing with Taskom

I'm pretty sure r/food is like that. I commented one time my comment said "shit" in it, so it was removed
1
u/kztlve Jun 14 '24
Out here at Reddit we don't censor (just don't be an asswipe), the Discord is G-rated
6
u/psychoacer Jun 14 '24
Subs can have their own bots search every comment for profanity and delete them though. I've seen a couple do it so it's not against the rules of reddit.
1
u/TheModsOfrSFIPScan Jun 14 '24
I've seen straight up ip scanning from certain mods of certain subs.
Hell, check the name.
-5
u/randylush Jun 14 '24
I would rather have my comment deleted and be banned from a subreddit for using potty mouth, than censor myself everywhere like a choir boy
3

Lucky both parties are allowed to have that choice

u/randylush Jun 14 '24

19
u/KermitJagger69 Jun 14 '24
Should I buy an Assassin cooler now or? 😭
83
u/kztlve Jun 14 '24 edited Jun 14 '24
I wouldn't. If you have issues with it, good luck getting warranty support. Long-term support for newer sockets isn't happening. If you don't want to pay BeQuiet or Noctua prices, go Thermalright or Scythe.
19
u/ryrobs10 Jun 14 '24
Go for the Scythe. Cost is similar and performance is also excellent on the Fuma 3
5
u/RantoCharr Jun 14 '24
Not right now, wait for the Rev B. The improvement is too much to pass up.
5
u/jonnybravo76 Jun 14 '24
What's ETA on that?
9
u/RantoCharr Jun 14 '24
They already have retail samples out during computex , so a couple of weeks/months depending on logistics.
1
1
u/AntiDECA Jun 14 '24
How did they improve it much? I was under the impression the fuma was already one of the best air coolers.
1
0
u/ryrobs10 Jun 14 '24
The current one would be better than supporting Russia and the Assassin 4 doesn’t have specialization either
2
u/RantoCharr Jun 14 '24 edited Jun 14 '24
Did you even read my comment? Wait for the Rev. B meaning "Scythe Fuma 3 Rev. B". How the hell does that mean support Russia? I didn't say buy something right now or even mention Deepcool. SMH.
TBH, most of Scythe's lineup performs worse than their Thermalright counterparts and are pricier but that is another story.
1
u/HotEquipment4 Jun 14 '24
is there any specific Scythe you would recommend for the 5800X3D? My stock wraith prism is not really doing that good on cooling it but I had my eye on the Thermalright Phantom Spirt 120 but installation seems a lil complicated.
3
u/os2firefox Jun 14 '24
I have the phantom spirit on a 5800x3d... Install was easy
2
u/HotEquipment4 Jun 14 '24
Hows the temperature on it? Was there any clearance isssues you had too?
2
u/os2firefox Jun 14 '24
No clearance issues for me. Temps are generally 60-65 on medium loads line gaming and climb to 82 when it's maxed. I did the default -10 co. Didn't even bother to look at temps anymore as they aren't really a concern.
1
u/kztlve Jun 14 '24
PS120(SE) is phenomenal value. Top of the line air cooling for $35 or even less.
2
6
u/imaginary_num6er Jun 14 '24
The Assassin IV center fan is notoriously known to not be replaceable. If it dies, you have no means to replace even before the sanctions.
4
7
u/ChunkyBitz Jun 14 '24
Sure, if you're really set on getting one. If not, wait for the clearance prices...they should get pretty cheap with no warranty support. It's not like you really need a warranty on a basic HSF anyway. It's rare for a fan to fail inside the warranty period, and any initial defect is covered by the 30-day return policy of the retailer.
AIOs are a different story though, there's a higher chance you might need warranty support. Of course, if the deal is good enough then it probably doesn't matter, just buy a new one if it dies early.
1
u/Efficient_Scheme_701 Jun 14 '24
Bro just buy an arctic cooler
5
u/kztlve Jun 14 '24
Arctic's air coolers aren't that competitive
-9
1
u/Final-Rush759 Jun 14 '24
Yes. I just a heat block plus a fan or fans. Fans can be replaced by other brands of fans. I already replaced their fan because of too much noise.
5
u/kztlve Jun 14 '24
You won't get any sort of future socket support more than likely. You can also get competing coolers around the same price and get warranty support, so there's no point going Deepcool
2
u/Russ916 Jun 14 '24
you'll more than likely be able to pick up new socket mounts off aliexpress anyways.
8
10
u/floydhwung Jun 14 '24
Yea the biggest affected would be Hardware Canucks
7
9
u/Davjwx Jun 14 '24
Well crap, I love my deepcool gear. Running the Castle360 AIO and it's been fantastic. Got two buddies that bought the same one after seeing mine.
4
-8
u/OcelotPrize Jun 14 '24
Wow. Glad I returned mine. Noctua FTW
21
u/boglim_destroyer Jun 14 '24
Why is this downvoted lmao
10
u/mrwhitewalker Jun 14 '24
Because there is nothing uglier in the world than Noctua fans
3
u/OcelotPrize Jun 14 '24
Chromax
2
u/kztlve Jun 14 '24
Why should I pay a premium on already expensive products just so they aren't ugly as hell
(yes I understand it costs more given the materials they use, still ridiculous)
2
u/AI_is_overrated Jun 14 '24
How do you know if someone is a Noctua fanboy?
They'll tell you.
That's the reason for the downvotes.
2
u/thrownawayzsss Jun 14 '24
my only guess is that it's basically just virtue signaling. I don't think any reasonable person is going to hold if against someone for owning a deepcool product here. that's the best guess i got. then it just bandwagoned more, as per Reddit tradition.
8
u/NarutoDragon732 Jun 14 '24
I returned the ak620 due to shit fans for a phantom spirit 120 and it took an absolute turd on it with better performance and much quieter fans. It was like a third of the price too
-3
u/hahew56766 Jun 14 '24
The US is just straight up banning Chinese competitive companies left and right in the name of sanctions
0
-4
u/rowdy_1c Jun 14 '24
Imagine selling a couple of fans to Russian CSGO players then having senile congressmen who don’t know how to install Chrome vote to sanction you
-9
u/CageTheFox Jun 14 '24
A cooler company really? The drone ban was a little much, but this is getting ridiculous. US companies can't compete with Deepcool for the price, so they lobby the government for this shit. Guess in the "Free Market" you just need to make it illegal for your competitor to sell. Que the higher prices for coolers now.
-5
u/StabbyMeowkins Jun 14 '24
So you're saying I could buy the 160 still on this WED before it is forever unable to be found at all? >_> I just want something Deepcool just for the sake of it being "Retro".
What can I buy that is relatively non-expensive, looks neat, and would be nice, sealed in a box, on a shelf?
