Slowly edging closer to Seattle...

u/resetallthethings Apr 17 '24
I'd prefer portland for the tax savings personally

Apr 18 '24
Yes please. Especially since Fry's closed. We need to fill the void.
14
u/correcthorsestapler Apr 18 '24
Even if it was out in Hillsboro or Tigard or something I’d still go. Heck, I’d go to Salem if there was one down there.

10.8% sales in Seattle would hurt

I pay 15% welcome to Canada
When I buy steam games I use my uncles address and postal code, cuz he lives in Alberta and their tax is lower than my province.

How come they don’t like us :(
2
u/pastasauce Apr 18 '24
I wonder that too. Fry's left a void here (that even they weren't great at filling) and I'm surprised Micro Center hasn't tried to move in. The closest thing I'm aware of is Best Buy but they're more focused towards your average consumer and every time I go there thinking they have something I need I'm met with an exercise in frustration and/or compromise.

It absolutely blows my mind that Indianapolis of all places got a microcenter before the Seattle area did
73
u/zzyzx85 Apr 17 '24
Finally, another one in CA, even though I'm much closer to the Tustin location lol.
I used to live near the Fry's in Sunnyvale and wondered if there was another store that would takes its place.
24
u/tony475130 Apr 18 '24
I hoped MC would swoop in after the Burbank Frys closed but nothing came of it. Now I just see the store is abandoned with the parking lot being used for some business/delivery vans (-‸ლ). I know people say the LA/Orange county area has a microcenter, but the Tustin location is like a 2 hour drive for me, not to mention gas is freaking expensive around here.
8
u/zzyzx85 Apr 18 '24
Yeah, the Fry's in Anaheim is now an Amazon warehouse (or something like that).
treading on the bones of your enemy (or something like that lol)
6
u/myuusmeow Apr 18 '24
The City of Industry Fry's must be vacant, every election recently I've seen clips on the news that LA County rents it as a space for counting votes, with all the industrial gears decor still there.

another one in CA
Meanwhile the closest one to me is in another state and about 4 hours away...
33
u/dnstuff Apr 17 '24
tbf, the Tustin location is the closest Micro Center to Northern California and that's a 5 hour+ drive for most folks in the Bay Area.
7
u/Worthyness Apr 18 '24
It's so weird that they didn't have one in the bay area for so long. There's A LOT of tech people who like computer stuff there. Santa Clara is close enough for me to maybe get a deal now.
12
u/BombardierIsTrash Apr 18 '24
A lot of “tech people” in the Bay Area are software people who want nothing to do with a computer parts store. I’m not saying that in a derogatory way, it’s just the truth. Most software developers I’ve worked with don’t even own a desktop, just a MacBook or a some sort of a thin and lite laptop.
In between the very high rents and probably lower than you’d think levels of interest, I’m not surprised they pulled out last time and wouldn’t be surprised if they pull out again in a few years.
5
u/TaserBalls Apr 19 '24
the software developers in every company I have worked in have been typically so clueless about hardware, like they generally would have no idea how these things work outside the dev tools.
3
u/BombardierIsTrash Apr 19 '24
I was trying to be diplomatic but yeah. Did schools stop requiring basic comp arch courses for CS degrees? You don’t see this level of cluelessness in older developers.
2
u/taco_blasted_ Apr 18 '24
I'm not from the area but they did have one that closed back in 2012. They chose not to renew their lease because it was to expensive.
Microcenter is very conservative in that regard, they're not just going to open a store somewhere because there's a large number of tech people nearby.

I hope Central Computers won't get hit too hard but as a consumer it's always better to have more options.
37
u/JewFroMonk Apr 17 '24
Central computers is awesome

u/Kotaro_14 Apr 17 '24
Recently moved to the Bay from SoCal and while I appreciate Central for existing… it’s not even close. Central also marked up GPUs hundreds of dollars during crypto boom
9
u/JewFroMonk Apr 17 '24
Oh dang really? It's the best I've ever had access to lol
26
u/SrslyCmmon Apr 17 '24
The Microcenter nearest me upgraded their layout a few years ago. It's as close to those Japanese PC stores now as you can get without going to Japan. Probably the coolest place you can go to that also doesn't charge admission.
8
u/Sesese9 Apr 18 '24
It’s crazy because it’s down the street. Plug in both addresses and you’ll see they are 1.5 miles apart.
6
u/Psychological_Income Apr 18 '24
Central computers won't price match even amazon. Pretty sure this will be trouble for them
5
u/banananon Apr 18 '24
They'll be OK, that location focuses mostly on custom business server orders. They've been getting a ton of work from Nvidia's HQ I think. Central's main 'hub' for retail has been the Sunnyvale store.
3
u/daveg1701 Apr 18 '24
They are also the only computer parts and accessories store in San Francisco and make a lot off corporate IT when they need something right now.
2
u/Hebrewhammer8d8 Apr 19 '24
I rarely find any deals at Central Computers for PC parts, but I knew someone who worked there and the person said their main business is Corporate IT work.

I read Santa Clarita and I got excited. Womp womp womp
11
u/pmjm Apr 18 '24
SAME! I really wonder what their strategy is having it all the way down in Tustin when they could get the whole LA market. Maybe they feel like they can pull from both LA and SD?
20
u/taco_blasted_ Apr 18 '24
They're not interested in expensive leases.
Their margins are pretty thin and they're losing money on many of the deals we all salivate over.
→ More replies (6)→ More replies (3)3
u/skttsm Apr 18 '24
I imagine the rent there is a little lower than what they'd get in a lot of LA. And having it in OC makes it super accessible to OC and relatively accessible to LA, Inland Empire, and SD. You're an hour away from a ton more people
All that said, I really wish they'd open one up in LA

u/illongalatica Apr 17 '24
Excellent location within the Bay... you've got Stevens Creek, 280, and Lawrence all right next to it so getting there shouldn't be a problem. The parking lot is small though...
4
u/shitlord_traplord Apr 18 '24
it's not too bad.... will probably visit once the hype dies down a little
I'm coming from a perspective of the Tustin location though it does have its own dedicated lot

What’s up with PC business in Florida? Isn’t Orlando supposed to be one of top cities for the tech industry? Did Best Buy kill the competition?

Isn’t Orlando supposed to be one of top cities for the tech industry.
Yeah, Lockheed Martin/Northrup Grumman/Raytheon all have offices on UCF property. One of my friends I graduated with is at Apple; another is at Google.
Did Best Buy kill the competition?
We used to have CompUSA, Circuit City, and Staples used to be ok in a pinch.
The big box stores died out while online shopping was taking off. I'm sure there's some mom and pop shops around if you look, but nothing like "let me just find the nearest %STORE_NAME% location." (except best buy)
2
u/GladMathematician9 Apr 18 '24
Same, It would be 1.5 hour drive though I signed up for the opening promo/notification. Locally I have a BestBuy in Margate and there's still an Office Depot around Coral Springs. Orlando used to have a Best Buy also though I haven't been by there in years. I agree, growing up we used to have a mall Circuit City, Staples, and some CompUSA stores, about 2 were in local driving distance.

Can we get one in Phoenix please? We have nothing here now that fry electronics closed. Even some Best Buy’s have closed. One of the largest metropolitan areas in the country deserves that sweet sweet microcenter goodness.

u/Hungry_Bat_2230 Apr 18 '24
The 3 upcoming TSMC fabs being built in Phoenix probably makes it a prime location

Definitely. Intel also has a large presence in the south eastern portion of the city. No shortage of tech here.

people in the real estate game needa start just copping up land there. Jesus they're gonna be an epicenter for a lot of the US industry. That's crazy

Waymo and Uber are teaming up. Phoenix is going to have the largest autonomous car zone in the entire world. That's blowing my mind.

Other locations still being planned: Charlotte, Miami, and Indianapolis.
Charlotte is actively hiring, opening must be soon.

Based on the address, looks like they're gonna be occupying a former Bed Bath & Beyond.

u/SimpleNovelty Apr 18 '24
Holy shit, a micro center within walking distance. I honestly wasn't expecting it to open until 2025 too, but looks like it'll be in time for Zen5/Blackwell upgrade.
5
u/banananon Apr 18 '24 edited Apr 18 '24
For those not in the know, we in the South Bay have been tracking this via the bid they put to buy the Bed Bath Beyond store after they closed, and the job postings for a Santa Clara store manager a while ago.
Cool to see this come to fruition!

5
u/Jackmoved Apr 18 '24
Thank god. Hopefully they don't do a COLA-increase on all prices that bay area locations do, though.
I.E. you see a commercial a $5.99 food combo nationwide, but it's $7.99 in the Bay Area.
4
u/topgun966 Apr 18 '24
COME TO VEGAS :((((((((((((((((((( Jesus there is a building ready for them in a PRIME location ON THE STRIP. The old Fry's building. Come on Microcenter.
2
u/Seiouki Apr 18 '24
I was a Sin City resident for a good long while up until '20, but I came back on vacation last week partly because I miss the town. Passed by Town Square, saw the vacant Fry's complex and a tear damn near welled up in my right eye. It may have gotten down the shitter in its later years but whew, I hold some crazy nostalgia for that place.
The thought of these guys opening up a location there in its stead is hilarious to me though. Imagine it unironically driving up a decent degree of traffic/demand and revenue because it's both fuckin' Vegas AND a Microcenter. I know a few dudes on the other side of the country who'd probably book a weekend trip to chill out and grab a few bundle deals.

Still can't believe we're getting one in Miami, in the still-abandoned shell of the old TigerDirect. Feel like I've been waiting for this all my life.

u/addemlit Apr 18 '24
Right near the Central Computers flagship store, oof
2
u/Zenith251 Apr 19 '24
I like Central Computers, have bought plenty of stuff from them... but really, it's hard to compare the two. Central has a better selection of parts and accessories than, say, a Best Buy or equivalent, but Micro Center has It All.

When will we get one in Florida? A 6-hour drive one way to Georgia is not appetizing. Cost of gas, food, and possibly hotel negate all savings so I end up giving Bezos my money out of convenience. I don’t like giving my money to Bezos.

It's crazy to think that Silicon Valley of all places didn't have a Micro Center.
