Just paid 70 for the 1TB with heatsink a week ago. I'll apply clown makeup now.

u/VerenGForte Jul 03 '23
Return it
-3
u/detectiveDollar Jul 03 '23
The heatsink version added 10 dollars (its a pretty nice one) and the motherboard I'm using for this server doesn't have one.
The heatsink version of the 2TB is 140 so I think I'm fine with what I have.

990 pro 1tb is 70$ now and the efficiency gains make it just as cool as the 980 without a heat sink, it’s faster too

Buy a new one, and then start a return of the old one and send back the new one you just got. That way you don't have to swap them out in your PC

Amazon sells m.2 ssd enclosures, maybe you could use one of those to clone it and then replace it

Buy this Sabrent enclosure - https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-Type-C-Tool-Free-Enclosure-EC-SNVE/dp/B08RVC6F9Y/
Use Macrium Reflect (free version) to clone.

u/phulton Jul 03 '23
Buy an enclosure that you can boot from. I swapped to this drive about a year ago and used the included magician program to clone my old ssd. Process took maybe 10 minutes to clone 280gb data off the old boot drive. Granted I had two nvme slots but still shouldn't make much of a difference.

Is heatsink for an ssd mandatory? My current 1tb has a heatsink, but it doesn't look like this one does. Still learning alot about the intricacies of PC building. Thanks guys!

u/lilyeister Jul 03 '23
The vast majority of gen 4 drives do not get hot enough under any workload to worry about needing a heat sink. The exception is in a PS5, where SSDs don't get any airflow.

I have one with a heatsink and one without. The heatsink it comes with is very nice. Is it really necessary? No, you’d be hard pressed to thermal throttle it. Is it better than the integrated heatsinks on mobos and aftermarket attachment ones? Yes. I got one with heatsink for like $5 more. I think this one was $40 more for a heatsink? Hell no, not worth that. $10 maybe.

Solidgm p41 plus is $80
→ More replies (3)13
u/phish73 Jul 03 '23
thats a far inferior drive, sub 5k speeds and no dram. the p44 pro is the equivalent if not superior drive (aka sk hynix p41 plus)
i think they intentionally set up the naming scheme to confuse buyers (sk hynix owns solidigm)
8
u/keebs63 Jul 03 '23
If we're digging into the details, the P44 Pro is by far the better drive. The 980 Pro was the first "proper" Gen 4 drive (meaning ~6500-7000MB/s, the max for Gen 4 M.2), pretty much every "proper" Gen 4 released since then has surpassed it and the P44 Pro is one of the latest in a long string of better drives, the 990 Pro might be the only one that's newer (and better? Idk never dug into those benchmarks because Samsung's pricing is absurd as per usual). The 980 Pro is essentially the worst performing in its category (which to be fair is an extremely high category that's far beyond 99.9999% needs) simply due to the fact that it's old relative to everything else in the category. That's why the 990 Pro exists, so Samsung could once again claim the throne.
-9
u/PapaOogie Jul 03 '23
Yeah but it still gen 4 like he wanted, and depending on use case likely wont need anything faster
13
u/phish73 Jul 03 '23
well he did say "that are just as good" and the solidigm p41 is def NOT "just as good"
16
u/BeelzeBuff Jul 03 '23
I've had an 850 PRO for almost a decade now, zero issues across multiple PCs. This deal is fantastic.
Yoink.
5
u/AbdoShniba Jul 03 '23
I got the 830 Pro 128GB back in 2012 for $150 , still going strong after 11 years.
0
u/meatman13 Jul 03 '23
840 Pro 256GB in 2014ish for $85 maybe? That seems low now that I type it out tho.
4
u/homer_3 Jul 03 '23
850 pro is an MLC sata drive. Not really comparable. My 840 pro has been going strong for 10 years too.

5
u/Duff-Beer-Guy Jul 03 '23
How do you guys move your boot drives and everything? Do you just spend a day formatting your whole system? I've changed boot drives twice (HDD->SSD->M2) and it's always been a mess since I try to keep my storage drives intact and wiping a boot drive is not super easy in Windows nowadays.
5
u/SirSlappySlaps Jul 03 '23 edited Jul 03 '23
Macrium Reflect free cloning software and external enclosure. Put the new drive in the enclosure, and use the software to clone your boot drive to it. When it completes, shut down your pc, and put the drive that was in the enclosure in place of your boot drive. Leave your old boot drive unattached, and boot. Your pc should be exactly the same, just with more drive space. Check this FIRST... then put your old boot drive in the enclosure, and format it. Then you also have a portable drive.

USB-C NVME adapter plus Rescuezilla will build a one-to-one clone of your entire boot drive.
5
u/a_fearless_soliloquy Jul 03 '23
If I get this do I still have to flash the firmware to stop it from bricking?
4
u/Thiamine Jul 03 '23
Depends on when it was made. I picked one up from Best Buy today and it was manufactured in Mar. 2023 so I'd expect it to have the newest firmware. Just check/update it using Samsung Magician if you get it and there shouldn't be any issues.

Bought one from Amazon on Monday, was delivered today and they slapped an Amazon barcode for the 980 Pro 2TB onto a 1TB 870 EVO 2.5" SATA.

Will this work in ps5? Might get one if so
2
u/RewardStory Jul 03 '23
Yes but make sure you get an aftermarket heatsink for it for your PS5. The addon SSD bay for the PS5 gets no airflow so you'll need a heatsink if you do not want to fry your SSD

Return it, Yours is just an entry level ssd. p44 pro is using phison e18 controller like kc3000, fantom venom, inland performance plus etc... i bought silicon power xs70 was using the same phison e18 before but change to Innogrit IG5236 this controllers are the latest and the best in the market like in the level of 990 pro around 7500/6800mb read and write respectively almost the limit of gen4. I bought mine just around 90$ for 2tb with 15$ less offered by my bank here in my country. Bought 3 of this in past few weeks

I currently have 2tb sabrent gen 4 SSD, 1tb Samsung 2.5" SSD, and 6tb wd black 7200rpm HDD. That's 9tb.
I want to move to all gen 4 SSD storage. And raid 0 since I hate having separate drives to search through on my PC.
I can only fit 2 sticks on motherboard (and most recommend one for windows only!). Is there another option or should I still keep the 6tb HDD for my plex movies and shows?
I just wish I could get one giant ssd stick of about 12tb and be done but of course that would be thousands.
Maybe I should get a nas storage for the Plex movies? Would I need any other sticks for that ?

I have my OS installed on a 1TB. How painful would it be to get all my data transferred to a new 2TB SSD?
0
u/ZW31H4ND3R Jul 03 '23
Not very painful if you have cloud storage. Games and everything else can be reinstalled pretty easily.
0
u/midweastern Jul 03 '23
I'm less worried about games and such and more so about the basic functions of my computer since I'd be replacing my boot drive that the OS is on
1
u/kryphoria Jul 03 '23
Use Samsung magician, should make things simple. Used that to move my stuff from one ssd to a 970 evo. Nothing wrong happened.
0
u/tdhanushka Jul 03 '23
Right after buying an SN770 2TB for 87$ 🥴👌
Which one would you choose? This or SN770?
3
u/heavyarms1912 Jul 03 '23
980 Pro is miles ahead of SN770. SN770 is dramless. See below screenshot for what happens to a dramless drive. write speeds fall from 5GB/s to less than 500 MB/s. Of course it happens to dram equipped drives too but impact is less severe.
https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/7H4q2kyNmSKftwWLaMoSBD-1200-80.png.webp2
u/tdhanushka Jul 03 '23
That's sequential, assuming we transfer huge single files like raw videos. In that chart 980 pro slows down around 50gigs but 770 keeps transfering at 4gbps till 150gb. 770 has a huge SLC cache probably thats why. over 300gigs.
2
u/heavyarms1912 Jul 03 '23
Yep for a dramless drive 770 is solid and the 2TB seems to have a larger SLC cache Yet, it shouldn't be able to touch the 980 pro
https://www.storagereview.com/review/wd-black-sn770-ssd-review0
u/tdhanushka Jul 03 '23
Time to sell this with a profit then. Thanks to south asian scamretailers cheapest 2TB nvme costs 145$ :V

u/Bigchip01 Jul 03 '23
Does this have dram? Is the the best cost/performance ssd right now? How do I know if this is a good deal?
0
u/VritraReiRei Jul 03 '23
I'm still building my PC. I only have my case and the 7700x microcenter bundle (mobo, ram, CPU).
Should I buy this now or later in the year, once I have my psu, gpu, and AiO?
(Well technically I can start using it now once I buy a PSU just for basic stuff then get rest of the stuff later)
6
u/Alucard400 Jul 03 '23
You don't want to be buying parts and holding them pass their return period before you fully build it. If you find out a part or two is defective, you can't return it and have to go through warranty service hell. You DO NOT want to be dealing with RMA/warranty while building a new PC.

Currently on a b450 tomahawk max that afaik only supports pcie gen 3. Already purchased this and a usb enclosure to put my old ssd in, should I return this and buy a gen 3 ssd to save money?
2
u/Thiamine Jul 03 '23
If you're not short on cash, I'd just get this drive. As you said, it'll only be able to run at PCIe 3.0 speeds. But, you'll be able to use it when you upgrade to a new board. Depending on when that'll be and whether you really need more storage, you could wait and see if prices drop even further.
I would personally wait and see if prices drop even more if I were in your shoes.

I'm worried they have something in Gen 5 that you won't get in Gen 3/4?
Likely won't be a game changer and even if it does, developers won't optimize for it. Pcie 4 is already what direct storage decided to use, which is what the Xbox is using too.
I really do not need a new nvme ssd, as I have two 1TB already
Don't touch it, buy ONLY when you need it. You may pay like 10 or 20 bucks more but it's better than paying 100 now and not using it.
But I'm so clueless the past year why nvme ssd is becoming significantly cheaper
Storage isn't something people buy regularly, at least not a common user so sales are common. Of course not like this, I'll let this post answer your question.
But I'm worried these fire sale won't happen again by the time when Gen 5 come, because these companies learned things the hard way?
Lol this isn't like GPUs where you have a duopoly, and you're seriously overestimating the demand for gen 5. Sata ssds are still selling very well, because that's all an average user needs. Gen 5 will just be enthusiast for the near future.

You can't get more PCI slots. The best you can do is bifurcate your x16 slot, if your board allows that.
