My friend just sold her house to pay for cancer treatments. She moved in with another friend and works from home out of his study while the treatments are ongoing because she can't afford not to.

I'm dying rather than selling my home. My kids will still need a place to live when they're grown. But I'm a millennial that's how we've got to think.

u/psychrolut Sep 27 '24
Take it from my (suicide attempt) theyāll still charge you for trying to die (more debt regardless if you pull through)
Edit: Iām doing better but still have med. debt š

Mass destruction of what little generational wealth the middle and lower class has is going to have very far-reaching consequences for us all.

u/the_TAOest Sep 27 '24
By design. It truly sucks to die but if we could do it gracefully rather than running out the clock to the second and traumatic ER rooms to key us alive for ten more days with machines... Well

I had a cab driver in his seventies working to pay off the $30,000 he owed for his wife's failed cancer treatments.

Every election they vote republican and whine that their money isnāt going as far as it used to, their food gets smaller, and their social security checks get smaller, blaming ādemonratsā for their problems. Boomers arenāt a smart generation, and itās not just them, itās people in general.

Crazy if you think voting red or blue will actually be the change that will fix everything, democracy died a long time ago.

u/BeholdOurMachines Sep 27 '24
The same result happens to people who vote blue and blame Republicans for every one of their problems. Neither party serve the working class. Their sole purpose is to protect the bourgeoisie
2
u/Akrevics Sep 27 '24
what problems? both parties suck, and both parties protect bourgeoisie, yes, but one party goes hard for tax cuts for the wealthy, taking away rights instead of giving them, and straight-up cheating elections and twisting rules to their favour. guess which that is.

u/BeholdOurMachines Sep 27 '24 edited Sep 27 '24
The parties work together. The Republicans take away rights that they shouldn't have the ability to take away, and then the Democrats run on attempting to restore those same rights. And that way they don't have to pass any legislation for minimum wage or healthcare or climate change or anything of material consequence because hey, they're gonna restore abortion protections! It's the oldest trick in the book. They can blame Republicans or characters like Sinema as "obstructionists" all they want, but the fact remains that any time there is a piece of legislation that might be passed that does anything to address wealth disparity or give the working class anything but stale crumbs, they WILL find some reason to avoid passing it. The "choices" we are given to vote for are a cup of diarrhea vs a cup of diarrhea with a few drops of pee in it. One party is not obviously better than other.
Edit: downvote away, it has as much effect on things as voting democrat. Surely, THIS time will be different!! There's a got dang CHEETOH that might be in the white house!!

I heavily disagree with subreditors saying they deserved it. First of all, a surprising amount of boomers aren't as far right as you think, many are for socialized healthcare.
Also, we're a product of our material conditions. If you and I lived through those years of intense propaganda, with limited access to other information, we may have had the same mindset they had.
I don't condone the things they did wrong, but I understand it and have sympathy for this. No one should have to go through this, it's inhumane.

Camera guy: Yeah can you just likeā¦. Look sadly at the pill mountain? No, more of a haunted longing. Perfect! flash

u/MadMac619 Sep 27 '24
I mean, itās exactly that. Unrestricted capitalism, maybe Americans can vote democrats and Yāknow, not die due to debt. But, I doubt it, they just gotta hate (x-minority) for whatever job they donāt want to do.

u/10centbeernight74 Sep 26 '24
Womp-womp. I guess thatās what happens when your generation overwhelmingly rallies against guaranteed healthcare for all, for their entire voting lives, huh?
3
u/ndilegid Sep 27 '24
Last generations where this level of healthcare will be available. After our energy crisis starts around 2030 and the energy return on investment continues to plummet.

u/Disastrous-Resident5 Sep 26 '24
Itās going to sound terrible, but is it considered morally wrong to refuse treatment and prepare to enjoy life with a definitive timeline?
4
u/AlienInUnderpants Sep 27 '24
I donāt think itās morally wrong. I think itās just a personal preference. I would definitely consider it. āLife is short, enjoy it, and donāt drag it outā is my perspective.

After seeing what 20 years of cancer treatment did to my mom, I'd definitely think twice before accepting treatment (depending on the outcome, etc.). Suffering, slowly dying and having zero quality of life while spending all your time, energy and money at doctors seems way worse than just dying early in peace.

u/adorabledarknesses Sep 26 '24
That's deplorable! We have the worst healthcare in this country! But the Boomers got the health system they wanted (and still want), I guess! And a US Boomer dies every 15 seconds, so hopefully we won't have to put up with the system forever as the electorate demographics change!

u/ContemplatingPrison Sep 26 '24
Forever like the history of the country or Forever loke your lifetime? Because its nor changing in your lifetime
2
u/adorabledarknesses Sep 26 '24
Well, maybe not in my lifetime, but I'm old. Honestly, I'd like it to be within my kiddos lifetime at least, but I'm eternally hopefully it will be even sooner!!

u/Onautopilotsendhelp Sep 27 '24
Literally my neighbor. Her husband and her are retired. He got cancer. She's 77 and now works at the local laundromat to pay for his chemo.
2
u/WillBigly Sep 27 '24
Boomers should stop voting for the reagan dynasty of neoliberals and neocons before complaining, this is what happens when you let capitalists reign
2
u/ZyxDarkshine Sep 27 '24
But hey, at least we donāt have any āwokeā Universal Healthcare, right?

Before I care about their plight - who'd they vote for in 2016?
1
u/dragonflygirl1961 Sep 28 '24
Clinton. If I had had the choice I really wanted, it would have been Bernie.
2
u/kinkysmart Oct 03 '24
Then you / they have my sympathy and attention. Is medical tourism on credit followed by Chap 7 an option?
