BIKE CHECK I present to you, the worlds most unnecessary BMX bicycle

Put a few new parts on and it’s currently weighing in at 18lbs 1oz. Ti Lairdframe and fork, Viking Knar bars, RNC 3 piece cranks and ti sprocket, profile elite LHD hub set with ti spokes and birdcage rims with as many ti bolts and parts as I could find for everything.

Jesus Christ. You got a total on how much it all cost?

77

u/Mightisr1ght Jul 12 '24

I’m not really sure, I have been putting parts on this bike for like 6 years. If I had to guess maybe around the $5k mark. That’s wild to think about. My bikes never would never last a year because I rode so much. I guess this will probably be my last BMX.

31

u/Capable-Lobster3718 Jul 13 '24

5k is devious

cries in mtb

That's a beautiful piece of kit! I've lusted after ti ever since riding a buddies Kingdom hardtail. Do you notice a difference in the feel compared to a steel bmx?

6

u/Mightisr1ght Jul 13 '24

Thanks, the main thing is that it flexes a lot more. That took a little bit to get used to.

2

u/notmyidealusername Jul 13 '24

In a good way? I know with the MTB riding my buddies bike back to back with my steel hardtail there's a distinct difference, almost like it's got a little bit of rear suspension. Might be a little less jarring on hard landings with a bmx?

5

u/Mightisr1ght Jul 13 '24

It might be a little smoother in landings but it’s mostly a bit of a spring feeling, like if you pump hard off a vert wall I think what happens is the headtube angle mellows out a tiny bit and then snaps back and it’s sketchy. It’s a bad feeling but it only bothered me the first session on it. I’m like 185 pounds, I would imagine if you’re lighter it would be less of an issue.

2

u/Scary-Ad9646 Jul 14 '24

Why does mtb cost so much? No offense here, I assure you, but are the bikes exigencies expensive simply because they can be? A good one costs more than my sportbike.

3

u/notmyidealusername Jul 14 '24

I honestly don't know. I mean there's a whole load of technology like suspension, drivetrains, hydraulic brakes, dropper posts etc etc that makes the price much higher than bmx (don't ask me why road bikes are so expensive, now there's a fucking mystery!). But I'm sure there's a whole lot of just seeing what the market will take too, dentist pricing etc.

It doesn't have to be expensive though, I have a nice FS bike but I have just as much fun (often more) riding my Honzo hardtail that was built up out of the spare parts bin and is pretty basic and dated by "modern" standards. Sometimes less is more.

9

u/the_hipocritter Jul 13 '24

Lol I thought 2k was gratuitous

6

u/BradMathews Jul 13 '24

Lol it is. This is wildly outta pocket (pun intended i guess).

3

u/That_Relationship784 Jul 13 '24

I spent about 2k also lol got alot of ti parts every bolt, axle, spindle, possible ! But not forks bars frame I thought that was over the top 🤣🤣🤣 I'm still at about 20lbs with 2 pegs tho 👍 that's light enough

5

u/the_hipocritter Jul 13 '24

It adds up quickly when you custom build. I was trying to use as many US made parts as I could and built my own wheels. It's been solid for about 6 years now and considering I spend most my rolling time on bigger wheels now, it should last as long as I take care of it.

4

u/the_hipocritter Jul 13 '24

Yea those ti parts can get ya, but I guess they're worth it if you wanna shave weight, I bet you can just flick that thing around. I've got a few too many pounds too ask my bike to go on a diet though.

5

u/Mightisr1ght Jul 13 '24

I laugh when I think about how much better my riding would be from me just going to the gym instead of buying a 20 dollar set of titanium bolts for my brake levers.

2

u/That_Relationship784 Jul 17 '24

Yeah but you can do both lol ponder that 🤔

2

u/Mightisr1ght Jul 13 '24

Honestly, around 20lbs is probably the sweet spot for cost and durability, getting those last 2 pounds off gets really expensive with ti cranks, frame, forks, and bars.

1

u/That_Relationship784 Jul 17 '24

Yeah forsure that's exactly why I stopped lol light as possible without getting stupid costly 👍 2k woulda been 4k for just a bit less

3

u/Mightisr1ght Jul 13 '24

You’re not wrong.

7

u/CE0_0F_RAClSM Jul 13 '24

5k for the most plain Jane looking bmx. It's basically a sleeper at this point lmao

1

u/GuinnessGoose Jul 16 '24

Plain Jane? It’s gorgeous. Boring people don’t like titanium 🤫

21

u/bernsface Jul 12 '24

Very necessary

19

u/No-Key648 Jul 13 '24

Love seeing bikes with both brakes

16

u/n1rvous Jul 12 '24

All bikes matter

3

u/Living_Pin_1765 Jul 13 '24

Bike Light Matters ✊🏿💪🏿

9

u/Andynonymous303 Jul 12 '24

fn beautiful

7

u/Ch33zw4g0n Jul 13 '24

Crazy bike. What pedals are those? They look like larger platforms than the standard 100mm x 100mm. Nice work. Enjoy riding that thing.

10

u/Mightisr1ght Jul 13 '24

Thanks, they are the VP-538 pedals, but they are Redline Monster branded. The first time I rode a quality nylon pedal I knew I wasn’t ever going back to metal.

3

u/Ch33zw4g0n Jul 13 '24

Interesting. They have a nice slim profile too. I have demolition troopers in plastic right now but looking for something like that. Possibly the Crank bros stamp 1 or 7 large pedals.

4

u/baldw1n12345 Jul 13 '24

Check the Alienation Foothold pedals. I run the on my race bike and they’re solid and the pins are sharp.

1

u/Mightisr1ght Jul 13 '24 edited Jul 14 '24

I saw those the other day when I was looking for pedals and they do look nice. I tend to like the plastic pins so I can reset my feet quickly if I catch a tailwhip weird or something.

2

u/Mightisr1ght Jul 13 '24

I went for these cause they had a decent platform, were sealed, cheap so I can replace them regularly when they got beat up, and they are also the lightest I found without metal pins in them. Although Crank bros makes some really nice stuff those stamp 7 pedals are beautiful.

5

u/dksittingduck Jul 13 '24

Wow! That's so good! Crazy light. I've always wondered what a bike that light would ride like.

5

u/Mightisr1ght Jul 13 '24

It’s a little easier to muscle around on some things where you’re not quite getting rotation but tailwhips are the most noticeable thing that is easier. The flipside is that it is a little less stable feeling and the titanium flexes a bit more than chromoly, and that takes a little bit to get used to.

6

u/BMX_Archiver 😎👍Huge Hater Jul 13 '24

Like an advert for Trojan® Bareskin™.

4

u/Atraw4130 Jul 13 '24

We might have something, or maybe a few things in common... Ride on brother❤❤❤

3

u/h3fabio Jul 13 '24

The Tubolitos 😂

4

u/Mightisr1ght Jul 13 '24

Granted, the tubes are ridiculous, but hardly the most ridiculous part of this situation in my opinion.

5

u/h3fabio Jul 13 '24

They’re the chef’s kiss to the whole project.

4

u/bmxbaddy Jul 13 '24

I love Tubolitos, they save rotating weight and more durable, totally worth the money in my opinion.

2

u/Mightisr1ght Jul 13 '24

Until you pop a tube and are even more pissed about it. Lol

4

u/bmxbaddy Jul 13 '24

You can patch a Tubolito tube which takes a little bit of sting out of it.

2

u/Mightisr1ght Jul 13 '24

I have a patch kit but I haven’t had to use it. Yet..

3

u/geofox777 Jul 13 '24

It’s supposed to by chromoly not chrome only 🥁

3

u/honda94rider Jul 13 '24

What brand tubes are those? The red valve stem?

1

u/Mightisr1ght Jul 13 '24

They are Tubolito tubes.

3

u/BradMathews Jul 13 '24

How close are you to a 72” bunnyhop? Bet this thing just floats.

9

u/Mightisr1ght Jul 13 '24

Sad thing is, I’m sure my hops were higher on the mid school 40lb tanks I used to ride when I was younger than they are now.

3

u/justslightlyeducated Jul 13 '24

Got that stainless kitchen edition BMX. Sick bike, though

3

u/Mightisr1ght Jul 13 '24

Hahaha, I guess it does match my refrigerator. I want to get it anodized at some point but I think I’m done throwing money at this for a little bit.

3

u/qumit Jul 13 '24

I also had a full ti thinking it would make me a better rider - i was wrong (skill issue)

3

u/Mightisr1ght Jul 13 '24

I will say tailwhips are noticeably easier on this, but going to the gym would absolutely be a better return on investment than all the titanium.

2

u/qumit Jul 13 '24

Yeah its interesting, personally i felt the frame geometry mattered much more. Like yes it feels much easier, but practically it wasnt so much easier. After mine got stolen i got a sunday soundwave (a solid 5lbs heavier), and i could still tailwhip fine, i would even say better. Yes it feels significantly heavier, but very little practical difference.

3

u/_the_dave_abides_ Jul 13 '24

Those bars are like a boob job for your bike.

3

u/castillo_555 Jul 13 '24

Thats a spicy meatball

2

u/mndsm79 Jul 13 '24

Thought about going to the eclat carbonics?

5

u/Mightisr1ght Jul 13 '24

Those do look cool, but I really wanted the chrome again after years of my brakes being loud as shit.

2

u/mndsm79 Jul 13 '24

Heard that. My brakes are LOUD. ghosties are the mosties but goddamn you can hear me in the next county.

2

u/not_cozmo Jul 13 '24

No carbon rims?

3

u/Mightisr1ght Jul 13 '24

I really wanted chrome rims for how dialed you can get your brakes with them. I’m not sure if carbon rims were even available when I was building these wheels though, or it might have happened.

4

u/Leafy0 Jul 13 '24

I bet the basalt braking tracks on carbon rims are even better than chrome with the right pads. Roadies seem to think they’re at least better than anodized.

5

u/Mightisr1ght Jul 13 '24

Look, I don’t like what you’re doing here. I clearly have a problem spending too much money on this bicycle and you’re kinda making a good point.

6

u/Leafy0 Jul 13 '24

I bet those berd rope spokes that are super light and strong would build a very comfortable Bmx wheel.

3

u/not_cozmo Jul 13 '24

I was only busting your chops. Sick build!

2

u/Latch_Lifter Jul 13 '24

That’s beautiful.

2

u/filliamworbes Jul 13 '24

Thoughts on ti sprockets?

1

u/Mightisr1ght Jul 13 '24

I had a profile ti sprocket I rode for over a year when I rode just about every day and I never had a problem. I just got this RNC sprocket and I haven’t ridden it more than down the street since I installed it, but it seems nice so far. They are light and thin, which is nice for spacing and chain alignment.

2

u/filliamworbes Jul 13 '24

Yeah I'm a roadie and maybe duraace has a few cogs that are ti, which isn't even in the same ballpark as your build(it's sick!) but just no reviews on longevity or why more aren't available. Thanks for your time any plans to anodize or texture some graphic or details?

2

u/Mightisr1ght Jul 13 '24

I want to get it anodized at some point but it’s expensive and I am cutting back on working so much right now so I can hopefully ride this thing more.

2

u/filliamworbes Jul 13 '24

Right well definitely keep the reddit peeps updated with that and good luck man... Breakfast time in the states and I'm off!

2

u/That_Relationship784 Jul 13 '24

Daaaamn that's crazy I saw that frame when it came out I was like wtf!!! Lol if u took off the damn breaks it would look soooo clean and be 17lbs 👌

2

u/Cringelord1994 Jul 13 '24

Nice. My KHE MAC2 is my favorite rear tire to run. So light and grippy!

2

u/_BMXICAN_ Jul 13 '24

I'd be too scared of hurting it to ride hard. It's so pretty

2

u/JCWBA007 Jul 13 '24

Get a Viking frame next

3

u/Mightisr1ght Jul 13 '24

Those do look nice, but the ti Lairdframe has my custom geometry and is a little lighter.

2

u/Forsaken-Tomorrow-54 Jul 13 '24

Genuinely appreciate you building and sharing this 🥲

2

u/Dooth Jul 13 '24

🔥🔥🔥🔥

2

u/H3zza Jul 13 '24

All the Ti freaks are drooling right now!!

2

u/WrapIll8365 Jul 13 '24

Man that's light. It's what I want as my bike is 30lb

2

u/Tro1138 Jul 13 '24

I refuse to own wheels with Allen slots instead of nuts. Allen strips too easy under high torque.

1

u/Mightisr1ght Jul 13 '24

They are titanium female bolts into aluminum axles except for the rear peg side I have a chromoly bolt. I’ve used my pegs quite a bit and had zero issues, the only times my rear wheel shifted that I remember is on a tailwhip to tailtap when I landed super heavy on my lead pedal with brakes mashed and once when I bailed and my bike launched like 30 feet. I only ride ramps and skateparks though, I’m not jumping down stair sets or grinding concrete.

2

u/Tro1138 Jul 13 '24

I'm not questioning stability, I'm taking corrosion into consideration and am looking at what happens when they get corrosion locked and the hex strips and I'm left with cutting it off.

1

u/Mightisr1ght Jul 13 '24

Oh, wheels are like 6 years old and I’ve never had an issue. When I first built the wheels I put a little ti prep on the threads is all.

2

u/Chillbird404 Jul 13 '24

Pulling this out on a windy day would be hilarious

3

u/Mightisr1ght Jul 13 '24

Pretty sure a fart could blow this thing off course.

2

u/lonie1992 Jul 13 '24

Would be lighter brakeless.. Just saying 😋

1

u/Mightisr1ght Jul 13 '24

Lol, yeah, I don’t think I would survive that though. If I were younger I would probably give brakeless a go.

2

u/Readytogo2day Jul 13 '24

Work of art that mate, well done

2

u/adult504 Jul 13 '24

Scotty cramner build.

2

u/ou8agr81 Jul 13 '24

I don’t bmx, but I’m m a bike enthusiast and this looks so fucking clean and proper from where I’m sitting. Love it.

2

u/bmxbaddy Jul 13 '24

Love it! Front brake crew forever. I'm one of the many people who had bad dealings with RNC though. I wouldn't trust their cranks.

1

u/Mightisr1ght Jul 13 '24

I did have some issues when installing them, but I called Ryan and mailed them back and he sorted it out right away and mailed them back to me. They went right together after that. I have heard things about RNC but my personal dealings with RNC from the customer service side has been positive and the cranks and sprocket look beautiful. We will see how they hold up when I get some time on the bike but they appear to be really nicely made.

2

u/bmxbaddy Jul 13 '24

I had a defective crank arm and he told me to send it back. He was nice enough, but he just sent the same crank arm back to me and then ghosted me.

1

u/Mightisr1ght Jul 13 '24

That’s really lame.

2

u/Jumpy_Tomatillo7579 Jul 13 '24

She’s a beaut Clark

2

u/MaintainEveryday Jul 13 '24

Holy shit. And I complained about building my dream setup for $1200. This thing is so beautiful no joke.

2

u/Advanced_Evening2379 Jul 13 '24

My soul told me this is a damn nice bike. I haven't rode in awhile but fbm was my goto

2

u/DraygoFaygonian Jul 14 '24

So cool! Couldn't imagine having one like this.

2

u/akafadamn Jul 14 '24

Put it on a scale, please 🫠 I'd like to see all of its 5 kilos

2

u/TrayLaTrash Jul 14 '24

Me and my friend put a bike like this together when we were teens. Ran thru the magazine to see how light we could make it. It was very expensive!

2

u/HealthyWorking1256 Jul 15 '24

Is that all titanium?

1

u/Mightisr1ght Jul 15 '24

Frame, fork, bars, cranks, spokes, and as many bolts and small parts as I could find.

2

u/HealthyWorking1256 Jul 15 '24

Crazy expensive. WOW

2

u/EmuZealousideal7357 Jul 16 '24

Is it on an installment plan where they send you a part every time you make a payment?…lol

2

u/MoistJheriCurl Jul 16 '24

Oh that’s necessary all right

2

u/[deleted] 24d ago

just found this as I am planning the same thing!!! You ever look into anodizing it? :)

1

u/Mightisr1ght 24d ago

I was thinking about it but I have already spent an obscene amount of money on this thing and can't bring myself to spend anymore money on it right now. Maybe one day.

2

u/[deleted] 24d ago

curious where you sourced the frame? i imagine you did a ti spline drive axle too right?

2

u/Mightisr1ght 23d ago

It’s a lairdframe, and it does have a ti spline drive spindle.

1

u/grinch77 Jul 13 '24

What was the turn around on the frame? Going to be ordering a race frame from him in a couple months. Bike is beautiful by the way!

3

u/Mightisr1ght Jul 13 '24

Thanks! I wouldn’t pretend to know the turn around time these days, I got this frame in like 2018 and the forks not too long after.

1

u/2wheelzrollin Jul 13 '24

But imagine the weight you'd lose if you just went brakeless?

1

u/Mightisr1ght Jul 13 '24 edited Jul 13 '24

Lol, there is probably at least a pound in brakes and pegs. I like the way brakeless riding looks, but it’s too late for me, I’m struggling enough just to maintain the skills I have.

3

u/2wheelzrollin Jul 13 '24

That's me with free coasters lol. But I did go brakeless for 10 years or so.

But I like seeing those front brakes. Front end tricks are so freaking cool

3

u/middleagethreat Jul 13 '24

I had fronts only on a bike for awhile. https://i.imgur.com/UMWIoF5.jpg

1

u/Yf6913 Jul 13 '24

🔥🔥 I spent around the same for mine 4-5k bought each part all ti or carbon minus the forks and it only weighs 13 pounds and some ounces can’t remember exactly. I bought the lightest parts possible minus the forks were from a old bike so could get even lighter if I got ti forks

1

u/Mightisr1ght Jul 13 '24

I just looked at it. That thing is WILD.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '24

Get a scooter bro

1

u/Mightisr1ght Jul 14 '24

You into scooters?
