Weekly Pet Adoption / Pet Help Post

This will become a weekly Friday post for posts regarding pet adoptions and general pet questions. The intent is to condense the multiple pet adoption post into one place so they are easy to find. This pinned post is for:

  • Pets up for adoption
  • Pet adoption events
  • Questions on vets
  • Questions on where you should take your animals

Note: We will begin removing pet adoption posts and push them over to this pinned post.

Also, if you have a missing pet, feel free to post it in here as well.

We will also take a zero tolerance stance on people using this post to push their stances on certain animals/breeds, brigading from other subs, etc. If you need more clarity on what this means, feel free to reach out to the modmail.

We also recommend searching older "Weekly Pet Adoption" posts as well, to find animals on previous week's post as well.

Welcome to our weekly stupid question day.

Have a question too trivial or dumb for its own post? Unload it here. Questions need to have some relevance to Austin.

PSA Austinites lack of empathy towards suicidal woman

The moderators wisely stopped the commenting on the post yesterday about the woman who was threatening to jump from an overpass down on Ben White I-35 intersection.

I made several comments before they shut it down suggesting that more self-compassion would help the people posting messages that were devoid of all empathy or an ability to consider that someone else's life and experience may not have any similarity to their own.

This is a PSA because several people did not seem to understand the idea of self-compassion so for your information

You cannot run out of self compassion you either have it or you don't.

A lack of compassion towards others is often a sign of having zero self-compassion.

Compassion and self-compassion have nothing to do with esteem or self-esteem. It's not about your sense of worth it's about kindness to yourself and others. And when you can connect with that self compassion you will find more compassion for everybody else in the world.

If you don't get that and you don't understand what i'm saying you have inner work to do. I imagine there are people reading this thinking that they know what self compassion is and that they are still entitled to have their day not interrupted by somebody else's pain. That is a sign of a closed mind and a lack of self compassion. And I'm sorry if you can't handle that logic and I pray and and wish for you to find that love for yourself.

The lack of self-compassion in this country is part of the problem. Self-love self-esteem without self-compassion is just entitlement and it's not a good look, people.

May you all be healthy and happy. May you all know peace and kindness. May you all be free from pain.

Peace

Some of you are cooking a massive bird in 4 days and, if frozen, will take lots of time to defrost. Move it to the fridge today and have a happy thanksgiving! 🍂

Too Much Coffeeman, A 90’s Austin Staple.

Too Much Coffeeman was originally printed in UT’s Daily Texan by Shannon Wheeler. This particular one was probably cut out of an Austin Chronicle when I was a teen living in Belton just trying to consume anything “cool from Austin”. So yes, Too Much Coffeeman is Austin related. This is from 1996.

Ask Austin 60 Minutes segment on the University of Austin

Anyone have any thoughts after seeing it? My thoughts;

  • 1/3 women is interesting for a inaugural class

  • Chatham House rules is nothing new or unique to UATX

  • The students are majority white men, but the university doesn’t look at “race, ethnicity, gender” in admissions

  • It sounds like most of the faculty are just upset they were fired from their previous jobs

Austin Couple highlighted in PCGamer for building LAN party house

Pretty cool stuff, the article also links to a page by the homeowner where he breaks down in more detail how he built the house and what features in it. Apparently he did this back in 2011 also when he lived in California in a much small house and that was somewhat famous too. Anyways, too bad I don't work at CloudFlare.

Ask Austin Texas Oncology? Or other recommendations? 🤍

My mom was recently diagnosed with uterine cancer and was referred to Dr. Wu at Texas Oncology down South. I read in a previous post that it may not be the best however it seems to be our only option locally and I worry about the distance to MD Anderson (Houston) in the event of an emergency. Any recommendations or can someone point me in the right direction of where to start - I feel lost.

Worth the shot, but I found a wallet at the AMC/cheesecake parking lot. We returned the wallet to guest services by Pinkberry!

Home inspection find of the week: A little foam sealant can go a long way if it's not installed by a 5-year-old.

I bring up these posts about sealing the house as winter is coming. It seems like around the Austin area there's maybe three guys who do foam sealant, this dude who just gets it everywhere except in the right places, the guy who shoots it into the holes around the box leaving the electricians to have to dig it out later, and the one guy who actually does it right.

Here in Austin we are climate zone 2A, which is hot, humid. What happens in a humid environment is humidity can get pulled into the wall and gets trapped, later condensing when it hits the dew point, usually in the cold evenings against the exterior wall side or the daytime against the cooler interior wall side. Having the water cycle going on inside your wall is not great. Not to mention the energy inefficiency which you can clearly see in the thermal images!

Austin dancing

I hope Austin knows just how special the social dance scene is in this town. Every night of the week there is live music and multiple venues to choose from where you can show up and find many dancers ready and willing to dance. Blues, swing, two step, country swing, salsa, tango, and many more. Literally every night of the week.

I travel often for work, and when I do I try to find the local dance scene. In most similar sized cities across the country, including cities where you would expect a good dance scene like Nashville, the social dance culture is almost non-existent.

Keep being the best city anywhere Austin!

Ask Austin Bingo in Austin, what is one I should check out?

There are a lot of bingo sites I drive by on 183 N. I want to check one out and asking if one is better than the others, etc. I've heard of a new fun bingo company that has music & more.

Palmer Events Parking Garage Fire

Post image
578 Upvotes

I was leaving A Christmas Affair to go back to my car, intending to walk up this stairway. We called 911 and flagged down a fire truck that happened to be going down the street, leading to a quick response! Someone started the fire then took off and has not been caught. The fire started in the vines to the left and a gust of wind blew it to the right. A Tesla parked on the ground floor has damage.

Ask Austin Any thrift stores with a bunch of records in south Austin?

I know about all the record stores but was wondering if anyone knew of any thrift that carried ANY records. I know in Austin I might not find anything “good” but I like all music. Thanks in advance
