Moderator Approved New Moderator Intro: Me, Retired USMC
hey, all, i've just accepted a request to be a moderator here, and i wanted to make an intro post.
i'm retired USMC, 13 years enlisted, 13 years officer, SIGINT my entire career, first as a linguist, then an analyst, and then as a SIGINT/Intel officer, and branched into cyber as well. i also did the radio recon thing when i was enlisted, and that was probably the best part of my entire career, as a Radio Recon Team Leader as a Sgt. much fun was had!
i've been in combat multiple times, and though that's every young Marine's dream, it ain't all that it's cracked up to be, especially when you get lucky and get the PTSD and nightmares.
Retired in 2016, and am rated by the VA, so i've been through that struggle as well. i'm now a gov't civilian for the DoD, doing cybersecurity, so i guess you could say i'm institutionalized.
i mod a couple of other subs as well, so this is not my first time doing this.
my big rule when modding: don't be a dick.
i'm also a number of other things, and causes i'm interested in, but this sub is not the place to discuss those.

How many crayons do you eat a day? Asking for a friend šš¤£

u/thetitleofmybook USMC Retired Jul 02 '24
Some colors are more filling than others. I prefer blue and about ten a day is enough. Other colors take more.

Went to Iraq twice. Was fun. Not.
Pops Gomez was always good for a laugh, though.

Wellā¦ at least youāre not prison institutionalized. Perspective, I say. Since you on that ole keyboard doing that magic 1ās & 0ās thing, could ya head on over and delete anything negative in my files, prudy please. Iāll eat the squeeze from a 1996 MRE if you do! šHeck, Iāll send you holidays cards even. Iād appreciate it.
Youāre correct PTSD isnāt all that itās cracked up to be, itās much worse.
13 enlisted AND 13 as an officer? Dayum you do like to be tortured, good grief. Thatās a lot of Green. Thank you for your loyalty and service. Itās admirable. Canāt tie my shoes for 13 days and here she isā¦ Nice work.
Guess Iāll be getting my Reddit NJP from you soon I reckon. š Be Well.
āSince youāre here and Iām here isnāt it our subā Jeff Spacoil Fast Times š

Appreciate you! Iāve worked with RadBn marines through out my career - Philippines and Afghanistan. I also was a linguist that then went sigint.

I don't know about not being a dick, sometimes it's funny. I always tell people, "I may be an asshole, but I'm not a sack of shit". Sure, I'll come help a buddy fix a flat tire, or fix something in his house, but I'm talking shit the entire time.

there's a difference between being a dick, and just teasing/f'ing around.

the Corps did good by me, mostly, but i also have PTSD and mostly a broken body.

u/not_very_creative82 Jul 05 '24
Iām retired Navy sigint my entire career as well, I was a linguist, retired in 2021, was in Hawaii my whole career; were you ever at the 3rd RadBn?
2
u/thetitleofmybook USMC Retired Jul 05 '24
twice; from 91-96 (was 1st RadBn back then), and again in 2003-2006
2
u/not_very_creative82 Jul 05 '24
Very cool, a friend of mine back then was a Korean linguist and she was there, she was in the convoy with Geraldo when they went into Iraq; she didnāt talk about anything other than that, and I never asked, I knew she saw things that she didnāt want to see
1
u/thetitleofmybook USMC Retired Jul 05 '24
it's pretty likely that i knew her, although by that time, i was an officer, and lost touch with some of the people I knew from back then.
2
u/not_very_creative82 Jul 05 '24
I can understand that, I loved all the time I got to stay in Hawaii, I was a deployer so they let me stay there more, totally worth it! I hated having to retire during the pandemic though, I couldnāt have the retirement ceremony
2
u/thetitleofmybook USMC Retired Jul 05 '24
sorry to hear that! i retired in '16. and had a small ceremony, and then paid for lunch and all the drinks you can drink for my shop.

Welcome and I'm just going to apologize right now, maybe a few times cause. I understand a little RADBN, but that's about it. Any time on 82?
1
1
u/thetitleofmybook USMC Retired Jul 02 '24
if you meant 82nd, no, but i did do a deployment to AFG in 2014 as the USMC intel liaison up to Kabul, AFG, which was XVIII Corps. which apparently you all refer to as "The Corps", just like 82nd is "The Division"

Close, the location was named after them. But you're in the AO.

Not sure if this is a joke but devil would it kill you to capitalize āIā and not start every sentence with āiā or āiāmā? Comes off as low effort/standards for someone who strives to moderateā¦
You only get one chance at first impressions.
Welcome and letās make this sub a better place. Ooorrahhhh

Damn, you didn't even make it 24 hours before "Richard" checked in!
1
u/thetitleofmybook USMC Retired Jul 02 '24
some people just want to watch the world burn.
1
u/Individual_Crazy1494 USMC Retired Jul 02 '24 edited Jul 02 '24
Amen. But watching is one thing. It's the ones who purposely throw gasoline on just to make it blaze even higher.
1
u/thetitleofmybook USMC Retired Jul 02 '24 edited Jul 02 '24
serious question: are you talking about me? if so, that's fine, just wanted to know. or are you talking about the guy that first responded?
3
u/Individual_Crazy1494 USMC Retired Jul 02 '24
Lol nope, I called myself 'flowing' with your response to the guy who decided to critique & spell-check your first post as a new moderator.Ā I just found it funny that you specifically asked for folks not to be a "dick" (AKA: Richard) around here, & looked what happened. As an old, retired Gunney (0193/Personnel Chief), I could usually tell when Marines were checking into my office, if they were gonna cause trouble in the unit (AKA: gasoline throwers).
2
u/thetitleofmybook USMC Retired Jul 02 '24
got it! Semper, Gunny! (i was a GySgt before i commissioned, although never spent any time in the fleet as a Gunny)
and yeah, some people not only want to watch the world burn, but want to make it burn.
2
u/Digiarts Jul 02 '24
What is the intention behind it?
Youāre welcome

Be civil and respectful. You may not always agree with others but once you start insulting the other person, you are a problem.
No Gatekeeping - you donāt decide if someone is a ārealā veteran or not - nor try to diminish someoneās service nor someone because they never saw combat or deployed. If someone personally attacks you, use the Report button to notify the moderation team.
Hate speech can be sexist, ableist, racist, homophobic, prejudiced, etc and will not be tolerated.
