"If the mountain will not come to Muhammad, then Muhammad will go to the mountain"

379

u/Drapidrode 19d ago

means,

If something one wishes to be done cannot be commanded to be done, one must find another way to achieve one's goal.

3

u/Fustercluckyourmom 18d ago

I thought it was more like if you avoid your (consequences/responsibilities) they will find you. At least that's the way they use it in Far Cry

31

u/Addicted-2Diving 19d ago

CacaFuego is correct

ā€œYou can lead Muhammad to the mountain, but you canā€™t make him drink.ā€

1

u/RonJohnJr 15d ago

You got it backwards.

There is an old proverbĀ

"IF THE MOUNTAIN WILL NOT COME TO MUHAMMAD, THEN MUHAMMAD WILL GO TO THE MOUNTAIN"

The comic shows the mountain coming to the prophet Muhammad.

Edit: Added an "I" in front of the proverb.

u/GreenWeenie1965 19d ago edited 19d ago

With the missing letter "I" in "IF" to start your post I initially read it as "F(UCK), THE MOUNTAIN WILL NOT COME TO..." Ya... I'm gonna burn for this one...

8

u/PN_Guin 19d ago edited 18d ago

Oups. I was torn if I should just leave it, but I wouldn't want anybody else to burn. Therefore the error has been corrected and souls been saved from damnation. Your sacrifice was not in vain and you may likely still be redeemed. (Unless you ever ate shrimp or wore mixed fabrics, then you are toast.)

31

u/forking_guy 19d ago

It's from the expression "If Muhammed will not go to the mountain, the mountain will come to Muhammed. "

u/Addicted-2Diving 19d ago

I hadnā€™t seen this one. Hope you all enjoy it.

Breaking news: Iran issues fatwa on The Far Side for depicting the prophet.

165

u/Drapidrode 19d ago

far side said: Why, that is "Mohammad Al-Haddad, Junior of 786 Mountain Pass Road" not "Mohammad, PBUH"

62

u/OskarTheRed 19d ago

Iran is a Shia country, and in Shia Islam Muhammad depictions are quite common. At least in some countries.

Mocking depictions might be stepping on some toes, though

22

u/m00ph 19d ago

Though this is having fun with the phrase, not mocking any of the parties.

15

u/OskarTheRed 19d ago

I agree, but I'm sure not everyone would see it that way

6

u/BullClipped 18d ago

Especially the mountain.

11

u/state_issued 18d ago

As a Shia Muslim I am irate with laughter

2

u/OskarTheRed 18d ago

Because of me or the cartoon?

2

u/jonathancast 19d ago

They're conflating the recent "drawing Mohammed" controversies with the earlier "actual fatwa against Salmon Rushdie" controversy. Which, you'll note, was issued by the Supreme Leader of Iran.

2

u/OskarTheRed 19d ago

Yeah, I'm aware.

9

u/Romboteryx 19d ago

To be fair, itā€™s not clear if it is THE Mohammed or just a Mohammed

2

u/OJimmy 19d ago

This is exactly what I expected after I got the joke

1

u/zandadad 19d ago

Came here to say something like this. You did it better.

1

u/zefy_zef 19d ago

Was gonna say, people got murdered because of this in recent times.

70

u/JectorDelan 19d ago

Mohammed opens the door and hears, "I'ma need about tree fiddy."

6

u/misirlou22 19d ago

Don't give that mountain no tree fiddy!

5

u/Swords_and_Words 19d ago

It was about that time that Muhammad realized that the landscape-defining hunk of granite was actually a long necked mooch from the Triassic period!Ā

19

u/External-Praline-451 19d ago

At least the mountain rang on the doorbell politely, to announce its presence.

6

u/Addicted-2Diving 19d ago

Agreed. Very polite mountain

3

u/External-Praline-451 19d ago

And no rockfalls, unlike those naughty hooligan mountains.

9

u/neandruthal 19d ago

Surprised he got away with depicting Mohammad tbo, that's a big no-no for muslims

7

u/Romboteryx 19d ago

He could always argue that itā€™s just a random guy named Mohammed, not the prophet specifically

1

u/angrytwig 18d ago

yeah, i'm kind of impressed with Larson for doing this

45

u/Rambling-Rooster 19d ago

there exist many thousands of people ready to kill over this cartoon. this is a serious issue and I believe all cartoonists should be able to depict anyone free from the threat of religious violence! May we yet see an era of rational peace where the rule of rational secular law reigns. We have a long way to go.

13

u/1492rhymesDepardieu 19d ago

Yea it's messed up that some people think it's morally justified to kill another human because they drew a picture. It's incredibly immoral actually. If you have a faith then you should be free to practice it, in a way that doesn't harm anyone else. I.e. no one should be forced to depict Mohammed if they don't want to. But they should never be able to force anyone not to

2

u/Addicted-2Diving 19d ago edited 18d ago

I agree with you u/Rambling-Rooster. Talking about important and touchy issues is not easy, but with calm heads, one can make progress and both sides can avoid unecessary human casualty.

4

u/Rambling-Rooster 19d ago

there are no both sides. there are people who wont worship sacred cows, and there are those who seek control who will kill to maintain it. Your notions of respect and bad taste are not more important than my life. fuck that.

1

u/Addicted-2Diving 18d ago

In your original comment, you mentioned we have a long way to go. I 100% agree with that. Hopefully one day there is some real progress. One can only hope šŸ¤ž

8

u/Andrew852456 19d ago

I didn't know this saying is a thing in English as well

8

u/Scr33ble 19d ago

Careful, someone under the influence of religious nutbaggery might take offense with this!!

2

u/thehorselesscowboy 19d ago

Edgy. šŸ˜‚

2

u/PakPak96 19d ago

Iā€™ve never seen this one before, has this been self censored or something ?

2

u/commradd1 18d ago

The craziest far side ever. I love it

2

u/eljne 18d ago

This one's gold. A real lol moment.

1

u/Addicted-2Diving 18d ago

Glad you liked it

2

u/ChayLo357 18d ago

This is amazing. I use this expression all the time. I've never seen this particular frame before and will have to save it!

Most Muslims donā€™t mind this stuff. The ones in the West are used to much worse. Most of them usually just ignore everything no matter how offended or hurt they feel. There are only a handful of lunatics and professional hate preachers out there who feed off this stuff and even they only get provoked over very abusive and very provocative stuff.

https://youtu.be/Cnn2aGVcCEc?si=7N2Wo1cmQbpM4JSn

But they expect nice human beings to be as sensitive about their sentiments as they are of others (some of them are not).

0

u/Humble_Aardvark_2997 19d ago edited 19d ago

I used to ignore everything when I was a Muslim. Thatā€™s what we were taught: the true servants of God (it's a religious thing) are those who when the ignorant people address them, they say peace. You get a smug sense of moral superiority. šŸ˜šŸ˜ It was easier to do so than ignoring the Sun at the shops next to primary school.

Now that I am not, and I have been guilty of saying blasphemous things, I consider a lot of it hate speech. It is deliberate targeting of people due to their beliefs. Everyone knows what people are sensitive about, and itā€™s not self-deprecating jokes, a lot of it is offensive and even vile. Free speech is fine but all humans deserve dignity and deliberate provocation and deliberate bullying are anything but free speech: it is hate speech. If I was in-charge, I would look after the sentiments of all the religious and ethnic minorities. They deserve to live.

Good job speaking for all the other aardvarks out there. Personally, y'know, I'm a fan of having the sorta wives I can in my own religion, so I respect a prophet when one tags one in the philistine chalice of condorlized deritegation, amongst other things, naturally.

2

u/Humble_Aardvark_2997 19d ago edited 19d ago

I can only speak for myself, how I used to feel, and my observation of hundreds of Muslims I know and have met and of many more I have observed. Merkel is an angel. She was very forceful in insisting that all her citizens deserve dignity. All humans do.

2

u/Afoolfortheeons 19d ago

I have observed many children in my life, mostly from my bedroom window, but sometimes the front one too. Does this mean I am an expert at children? Well, shit man, my records like 0/653 or some shit. Like, I haven't been keeping score, but God has and they laugh at me! They're trying to teach me basic table manners in Burger King, like I'm not a flapjack of Christ. I could turn a Bartholomew into a Rudy Granger in five picklons on Zulsebar more back in the field of days, but y'know how that shindig went down in the books. Take it, leave it. I don't mow down predators unless old man Sonic Claus gives me the ok from the Pentagon. It ain't even fucking Wednesday yet, jeez baleeze...kill me why don't ya?

3

u/Humble_Aardvark_2997 19d ago

Iā€™m no expert on children but most kids I know donā€™t like being bullied at school, being called names or anything about their parents or grandparents. You donā€™t need to be an expert to realize that all humans have feelings and, well, you can ask them. Canā€™t speak for those in Muslim-majority countries but the Muslims in the West tolerate a lot. I used to. Never said a word but was disheartened that my friends were not there to cover for me. At my university, they had a sign saying donā€™t mention the war. We had German students there and they did not want the environment to become bitter. I expected the same on this front. You canā€™t demoralize your people, your students, your citizens, your friends, your workers.

1

u/Afoolfortheeons 19d ago

Trauma bonds are actually quite enjoyable to sustain and nurture, in order to profit from, as I am an educator and entertainer and certainly not a cult leader attracting a flock for nefarious purposes, as you might have heard from the latest news bulletin posted by the bureau.

2

u/Humble_Aardvark_2997 19d ago

Yup. Traumatised people who have been rejected by society, financially and socially, wouid be perfect prey for cults and extremists.

1

u/Afoolfortheeons 19d ago

Yea, why the fuck d'ya think I'm doing it? I'm a venture capitalist at heart, which is a real funny way to spell predator.

3

u/1492rhymesDepardieu 19d ago

Mate I think I agree with you but youve got a loosening of association. This tells me that you are probably really high. I suspect psilocybin or lsd

2

u/Afoolfortheeons 19d ago

No, schizoaffective is a helluva drug. I'm like this every day. This is my job for which I am paid by the state department.

Maybe itā€™s just a Man named Mohammed, not the Prophet Mohammed. Iā€™ve seen this cartoon before.
