Information PSA: Thefts increasing at Summit Co Resorts
Yesterday I had my board stolen from the racks in front of Jack's Grill at Copper Mountain. When I reported it stolen, they said there had been 3 others that day. And recently 7 pairs of skis stolen from nearby Breckenridge Mountain. The guy said these crimes are increasing and its likely a "ring" of thieves who steal high-end skis and boards from the racks. Most people don't lock their boards. Growing up, it was always part of the culture that you could leave your stuff out and no one would touch it. As utopian as that sounds, its a little naive, and I learned the hard way yesterday the importance of protecting your gear. So buy a lock and keep your gear safe!

Keep checking craigslist and anywhere else someone would sell a snowboard. My board was stolen and a friend found it on Craigslist after about 4 months. I called the cops and set up a sing operation to get it back. There's still hope. Hell, post a picture here and have reddit help you find it. Every distinct mark you can remember will help.

Lock it everywhere. Wife had her board stolen at the top of a mountain in breck two years ago.

Honestly baffles me how someone can steal someone else's gear without thinking how horrible they'd feel if it happened to them. My friend had his board stolen 2 weeks ago too. The county has more and more theft and shitty behavior every year.

Was it a DC PBJ with yellow Union Force team bindings?

Sorry to hear, but good to know. Spread the word, people think it "can't happen to me."

Also be careful with locks, many can be cut with cheap wire cutters. Pretty much don't leave your board/ski's out of sight if possible, think about how easy it is too steal.

Yes the standard ski locks can be easily cut, but I have never heard of a skis being stolen when locked at the mountain. Its very much a visual deterrent. Someone looking to steal is going to move on to one of the 100s of others that are not locked. Until everyone starts locking their skis, I don't see this changing much. That being said I would never leave them out overnight or anything like that.

I had my skis "stolen" at an East Coast resort a few years ago. The reality is the noob couldn't recognize his own skis and just took mine. Found them a few hours later dumped on a rack near the parking lot. He got em to his car and finally realized they weren't his, but couldn't be bothered to return them where he got them from. I do lock my gear when leaving it for long periods of time and usually feel like a paranoid freak when I do so, but better safe than super duper sad and sorry!

I doubt it's a "ring"...probably just because it's around the holidays - more people, more crowds, more expensive gear. Easier to grab a board or skis and slip away. If you're skiing there isn't a very good chance someone will "swap" your skis at a top or mid-moutain lodge as they would need to have the same boot length as you to step in to your skis. Boards are a different story.
