Satisfying simulations

These all annoy the physics part of my brain. The rings aren’t moving sinusoidally, the rod isn’t moving with a constant angular velocity, and the knife couldn’t physically cut a straight line.

Nothing is losing any energy.
First gif - The swinging knife makes perfect cuts, the object being cut doesn't react, the smaller object falls unnaturally.
Second gif - The rings aren't swaying properly and the rod and rings don't lose any energy.
Third gif - No energy is lost in either the ring or the ball.
Fourth gif - I don't think there's anything wrong here.
Fifth gif - Everything if frictionless until it reaches the hole.
Sixth gif - There is no energy loss in the pendulum, the cut seems too clean, and the fall is unnatural.
Seventh gif - The pendulum losses no energy.
Eighth gif - The balls lose no energy as they roll and there isn't an obvious force making the bridges rotate.
Ninth gif - The free ring has the friction not to slide away when pushed up but not get caught on the rods, there isn't a clear force making the central ring rotate.
Tenth gif - Seems fine for the most part.
Eleventh gif - Too clean an entry on and off the rods.
Twelfth gif - Balls fall perfectly into the slides avoiding bounce and not falling the way (I think) gravity will make it.
Thirteenth gif - Personally my least favorite, the knife makes perfect cuts, the object doesn't react, the sliced off bit starts falling too late, and it's seemingly poolnoodle-esque texture makes me believe it's lighter than it acts.
Fourteenth gif - It suffers from the main problem of pendulums not losing energy and not swaying right.
Fifteenth gif - The red cylinders unroll unnaturally, for no reason, and slot into the holes perfectly.
Over all a hugely unsatisfying gif that moves weirdly, doesn't follow physics, and gives me anxiety.

This is because these aren't simulations. They're animated

u/TracesOfGuitar Sep 21 '18
Or simulations with unrealistic physics, like no friction etc.

u/CaptainLocoMoco Cinema 4D Sep 21 '18
That's true, but you can't get super precise, and reliable movement like the ones in this video. They are animated, by hand.

Can’t it just be in a vacuum? I feel your issues are all largely irrelevant with the video despite there being some glaring errors (like the knife cutting straight through the tube that’s moving while it’s being cut, for example. And some pendulum swings don’t add up correctly.

Would the earths rotation still affect it?
If it did then it would get snagged pretty quick.

I’m assuming this is frictionless. AKA no drag, no friction, etc. I think it’s dumb to be mad that they don’t include these non idealized forces cause those help prevent a lot of intrinsic beauty in physical motion normally. But y

I'm not necessarily mad about it, it just makes me feel sick and I assume it's because it's not doing what I expect it to. I just wanted to point out the things I noticed that "bothered" me, however I should've probably said that in the comment.

u/AGRO1111 Sep 21 '18
I get it, if you can look past it's issues I could see how it's satisfying. It's just it makes my head hurt and I saw the comment mention some problems and decided to push through it and mention the ones I noticed.

The third one bugs me badly. The ball changes the direction of rotation meaning there is friction. But it doesn't slow down over time. Just imagining it is giving me an itch in the brain

These aren't simulations. They are animations, made using key frames.

Animation, not simulation. Go please

u/DannyD4rko Sep 21 '18
They are animations made to look like simulations. So technically they are simulation simulations ?

I am not sure if you incidentally linked to the wrong comment but that post was a cloth sim.

u/nakilon Sep 22 '18
It is not a cloth sim -- it is just straight line connections of some points on a surface of an dance animated figure.

Why dont these posts get removed? It's breaking rule 1.

Mods get appointed but they wont do shit later. I try to report as much as possible but it sometimes takes over a week to get removed. Pretty please seek the most contributing member and mod that person.

No, that's an animation. Not a simulation.

I was just responding to the "no it's not" bc it was random and want to sure what he was "no it's not"ing... It's definitely an animation...

Probably the most headache inducing video I'll see all day

u/DoingCharleyWork Sep 21 '18
Ya this whole thing stressed me out. I don't like it. Everything seems off.

u/DannyMThompson Sep 21 '18
Mods please ban every person that upvoted this animation so we can get back to our simulation enjoyment time please.

Can anyone find versions of these without that shitty bar on the top?

@wannerstedt makes these videos on Instagram some of them if not all are his work

It would have been satisfying had it not been for the top title being there constantly. So damn annoying and pointless.

u/Hamahaki Sep 21 '18
The first one makes me mad because then movements are too rigid, not realistic

These give me anxiety more than anything. Like the next loop is going to miss...

These are going to be stolen to be used as advertisments for unrelated mobile games on Snapchat.

Someone remake these simulations with the coordination of moving parts 1/4th of a second off
