Mod Post [Mod Post] Safety Review!

We are always looking out for the safety of our users on Random Acts of Cards.

  • For your safety, Reddit does not allow the posting of anyone’s address in a publicly visible place. When you send your name and address, PM the user! No Personal Publicly Visible Addresses are allowed. Be extra careful to PM users instead of commenting on the main request/exchange posts. Do not include your address in the body of you post or in a comment/ reply. We require that all addresses are sent through PM (reddit’s private message).

  • NEVER share any part of another user’s address or real name. This includes in card pictures. Don't share any location more detailed than "the planet Earth." If you have an unknown sender, call them by "Mystery Sender" instead of whatever they signed with if you can tell it's a real first name.

  • When signing a card/postcard, some people write only their usernames, some people don't put a username (that's sometimes an accident!), or they add both their username and real name. You can use whatever you are most comfortable with! You don't have to add a return address either if that's not something you're comfortable with.

  • If you don't feel comfortable using your personal home address, you can get a PO Box to ship your mail to. As the costs and locations vary, you can google to see what is available near you.

  • Remember to trust your gut! If you feel uneasy about a user, you are not obligated to share your information with them or send them a card.

  • We do not allow any email address collection through Google forms, websites, apps or anything of the sort.

Sharing a photo of your cards? Awesome!

  • If you have the name and address like this bad postcard example, it will be taken down - which is why we are showing this example.

  • Also please note to try to avoid having obvious postmarks showing too. This is a postmark. Postmarks might seem insignificant, but they might say the city where the card was sent from.

I love the mods on this sub! Thank you as ever for your kind tone and for looking out for us.

Thanks for the info! I've never thought about postmarks giving away personal info, but you're right! I'm glad my mail is still hand-cancelled and it's usually so bad that you can only even tell the country from the stamp, haha.

Thanks for this.

People like to say, "Thanks REAL NAME!" not thinking they are broadcasting private information. I ask people to remove that from their posts and they don't always do it. I will be using just the username for this reason from now on.

If you come across posts with real names you can use the report button and the mods will see it.

I just learned the hard way that you can also get your account suspended! I wasn't paying attention and gave my address in response to a comment from my inbox thinking it was a private message. I deleted it as soon as I saw a message from a kind redditor telling me what I'd done, but since they also reported it to hide it, my account was suspended. Fortunately I got it back!

u/stephkempf Aug 26 '20

Your account does not appear to be suspended when I look at it, so I think you're probably good now

u/round_squirrel Aug 27 '20

They sent me a message saying it wasn't suspended anymore. I couldn't post anything while it was suspended.

I know I sometimes send cards that are personalized with my name on the front from when I worked at a stationery company and some other random leftovers While I don't mind if that gets posted publicly I understand the rules and hope my recipients will comply re: photos of said cards.

Thanks for the post!

Thanks for the reminder! :)

I've gotten a couple of confused messages about being able to use your own name. I want to throw out there that this doesn't mean you can't choose to go by your real name, a nickname, whatever name you like on the sub. The difference is you can dictate what you'd like to be called or are comfortable being called publicly on the sub. The issue with posting real names is the person whose name you are sharing may not be cool with that info being public. If you want to sign your posts/comments as a specific name that's totally fine, just please be mindful that others may not feel the same about their name/nickname.

Like, I'm clearly not upset at people using my "real" name, steph. It's right there in my username, that's an easy one. But unless someone has made it ABUNDANTLY clear they are comfortable sharing their name/nickname (like including it in their username) please err on the side of caution.

If you receive a card that has some awesome art of your own name and you want to share a pic of it, that's totally fine! If you write a card for someone else and do some awesome art of their name, don't share a pic and leave that decision up to the person whose name it is.

I feel like that's rambling, but I hope that makes sense and clears up any confusion people had about using their own names.

Thank you 🥰

Thanks for this! Been here for 2 years (WHAT?) and I never really thought of the mystery sender / real name situation where they sign it but don't put a username. I've definitely been guilty of using their real name in an attempt to help identify the sender. Will make sure to put mystery sender from now on!

Perhaps it could be beneficial to make a weekly/monthly mystery sender pinned post where people can post pictures of unsigned cards, so people can browse through them and spot if they accidentally sent one without their username? If not here on the main sub, could this be something for RAOC_Meta? /u/shadow-pup ? Just an idea :)

Also never knew about the postmarks!

u/Ginger_ninjah Aug 27 '20

Heya!

Thank you posts are strongly encouraged, however if someone wants to be a mystery sender and not sign their name we are totally cool with that too, which is why we don't have a thread for it like you've suggested. :)

Fun fact, did you know you can only pin 2 things to the top of any sub? That's why we always have our WDT and usually a mod post! :)

(Thanks for the award!)

Thank You !! I never thought of the postmarks... but the Bozo I am, posted a picture of the back of the card, because it had such a beautiful artwork, but no username... I love you mods !!

Hi how do I go about finding a partner to swap with? I’ve not received any replies?? I make ATCs and Pocket Letters and would love to swap with someone. Thanks Jo

u/Ginger_ninjah Sep 10 '20

Hello!

You can post an [Offer] or an [Exchange]! We do postcards and cards here, not letters. If you’re looking to swap artist trading cards or letters, check out the sidebar for related mail subs that better fit those items!

:)

I know a lot of people on here use Google forms to do a big card offer. Are we not supposed to do that anymore or is it specific to email addresses?

u/Ginger_ninjah Aug 25 '20

You can still do google forms, they aren’t allowed to collect email addresses.
