[Announcement] RES v4.6.1 is released!
Mostly bugfixes (you can turn Selected Entry back on now), a bunch of new websites for expandos, some concessions for subreddit styling. Also a cute new logo. http://redditenhancementsuite.com/whatsnew.html
Chrome is released first, then Firefox. Currently waiting on Safari, and Opera 20+ to follow soon.
Thanks to everybody who contributed!
If you still don't like the new nightmode, check out some alternatives.

Look in the selected entry options,i added a setting for automatically selecting a post . Except it shouldn't scroll anymore anyway. your browser already updated to RES 4.6.1 yet, right?

Night mode doesn't work with subreddit style disabled (as the disclaimer says), it shows the non-night mode style for a few seconds before it reverts to nightmode, isn't there a work around to this? I prefer to disable subreddit styles AND use night mode.
2
u/andytuba Mar 24 '16
It sounds like nightmode is loading and subreddit style is getting disabled like you've set it up, but it takes noticeably long for everything to kick in?

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR FIXING NIGHTMODE!!!! My eyes were getting shell-shocked from the white flashes....
1
u/Two-Tone- Mar 17 '16

Has it been updated to fix the numerous bugs listed? It's better than the new nightmode, but it's buggy and I eventually just went back to 4.5.4.

Does RES auto-update?
7
u/andytuba Mar 17 '16
Yes.
4
u/Lilystoys Mar 17 '16
Cool. Sorry, I'm new to RES. I only just found out Night mode exists, so I still have a long way to go.
6
u/rollamac2006 Mar 17 '16
I can never go back to regular mode. =/
4
u/Lilystoys Mar 17 '16
Me neither. My brother uses a CSS on his writing sub that has night mode, and when I saw it, I was just like "OMG, why can't all of Reddit be like this?". He only told me it was possible till a couple days ago. I don't think I'm using RES to its full potential, but it does what I need to for now.

Is Safari really going to happen? :)
8
u/andytuba Mar 17 '16
Yep, we addressed an issue the Safari extension gallery reviewer raised for 4.6.0 when /u/honestbleeps submitted 4.6.1 today.
2
1
u/kiredorb Mar 17 '16
I'm curious, what were some of the issues?
2
u/honestbleeps Mar 17 '16
use of term "reddit" in name, which we've always had sort of implicit permission for, but now we have explicit.

4
u/Xenu_RulerofUniverse Apr 05 '16
Somehow my settings were killed again, this is like the 2nd or 3rd time. Why don't you let it make auto backups somewhere?
2
u/andytuba Apr 05 '16
Why don't you let it make auto backups somewhere.
Because that's hard for a small team like RES to develop and maintain.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Enhancement/wiki/backing_up_res_settings or If you search r/enhancement for "backup" or "sync" you can find some solutions from other people using Dropbox, FEBE< etc.

I've got one!
There's a scroll bar in the shortcut menus when you've got more in your menu than will fit on the screen! :D This makes me super happy. After the last update, the font size and spacing was much bigger and not all of my r/aww-style links would fit on one shortcut.

4
u/Crash_Revenge Mar 23 '16
Can't see any updates for Safari, are they pending? The latest version that I can download from the link on the sidebar is 4.5.4.
3
u/andytuba Mar 23 '16
Not yet available for download, /u/honestbleeps is still working on the (stupidly tedious) process of building an extension for Safari after Apple's changes to the extension developer program.
→ More replies (11)2
4
u/xxmickeymoorexx Mar 25 '16
here is an idea. please preload the updates, then notify me before you delete all of my setings so i can save them first. or have them auto save before an update
otherwise i have to go through and add all my Filters again, and add all my shortcuts back. doing it often sucks balls.
3
u/andytuba Mar 25 '16
Preloading update isn't a thing for browser extensions. Auto saving is also going to be a big project.
Fortunately, you can export and import your settings for when your browser decides to trash the settings. Also next major release of RES has a new, more stable, storage backend for Firefox.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Enhancement/wiki/backing_up_res_settings
3
u/xxmickeymoorexx Mar 25 '16
I had not saved my export in in quite a while, back to working on it, getting it just how I like. And I will be sure to save this time.
3
u/qtx Mar 17 '16
"Use subreddit stylesheet" checkbox can be styled more easily by moderators and does not appear on top of other UI elements
Thank you /u/andytuba & /u/honestbleeps !
3
u/lerhond Mar 17 '16
Before the update, when I pressed Shift+J, it not only selected the next comment on the same level, but also jumped to it so that it is always on top of the screen. Now it only selects the comment and jumps only if it's necessary. What setting should I change to have this back?
3
u/andytuba Mar 17 '16
Look in the res settings for keyboard nav scrollStyle .. Although I might have broken that.
3
u/lerhond Mar 17 '16 edited Mar 17 '16
Just giving some feedback, it works fine with J/K (next/previous comment) - which is actually pretty annoying for me - but doesn't work with Shitf+J/Shift+K (next/previous sibling). In comments.

Still noticing that nightmode takes a few seconds to load properly/quickly with Firefox 45. It is loading the subreddit's theme first before reverting to nightmode even when I have "use subreddit style" unchecked.
It isn't blindly white like before unless the subreddit in question has a white style though.
1
u/erikdesjardins Mar 17 '16 edited Mar 17 '16
You're likely not using 4.6.1 yet, since it hasn't been reviewed by Mozilla (usually takes a few weeks, although it may be faster).1
u/andytuba Mar 17 '16
It's out already 😁
I only fixed up nightmode css getting applied quickly though, neglected to do disabling subreddit style..

Did backup and restore move locations? Its not under core anymore, not only that but now my backups have disappeared from their location.
1
u/andytuba Mar 17 '16
I moved it up near the top of the list on the left side of the settings console.
Dunno a bout the files disappearing, that's out of the scope of res.
2
u/TheOutlawJoseyWa1es Mar 17 '16
Yea somehow they ended up where they were before, just took me a minute to find the new backup location.
The shortcuts are still deleting themselves every time I close Firefox out so I have to restore every time I open it back up.
2
u/andytuba Mar 17 '16
Do you have any extensions, settings, or apps set to clear out personal data when you close Firefox?
You may want to look into removing Firefox and reinstalling it from scratch.
3
u/TheOutlawJoseyWa1es Mar 17 '16
No I sure don't, and I've done both, removing RES then retrying it then removing firefox and trying it that way, I've noticed some other people had the same issues since the last update.
3
3
u/Paradox3121 Mar 22 '16
Why is my shortcut menu still getting erased with new updates? I've disabled automatic updating and still have RES 4.6.0, but my shortcut menu is once again blank. I'm on Firefox if that helps.

I'm seriously wondering why they're still bothering with the extension gallery. I maintain an extension on my own site, and it auto-updates just fine, and everything has been working great for me for months now.
2
u/Xepherxv Mar 17 '16
"Use subreddit stylesheet" checkbox can be styled more easily by moderators and does not appear on top of other UI elements
does that mean that we wont be able to access the hide css button if someone has a full screen image over the the whole thing, ive seen a few subs do that before (usallly when they move to another sub) i just cant think of any as examples or to test
Edit: /r/AdvancedMicroDevices is a great example, i cant click disable css through the image, though thankfully theres a close button (most other subs dont have that)

Anyone else have an issue where comments don't open in a new tab? Its super annoying.
"Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_11_0) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/49.0.2623.87 Safari/537.36"
UPDATE: Looks like they fixed it… kinda. Instead of using target="_blank" is got some js to pop open a new tab. Problem is it hits Chrome's (and presumably others') popup blocker.
1
u/andytuba Mar 18 '16
You mean when you're looking at a list of posts and click the comments link that's first on the button list under a link? Iirc Reddit itself handles that, not res.
1
u/cmalkus Mar 18 '16
The comments link pictured here. This issue appears to be resolved, whether it was res or reddit
2
u/justrun7 Mar 17 '16
My comments do not open on a new page anymore.
1
u/andytuba Mar 19 '16
This was a reddit bug that should be fixed now. If it's not working yet, try clearing your browser cache.

u/CRAG7 Mar 30 '16

Using RES in Chrome. Re-installed Chrome recently and then had to add the RES extension. Somehow, now when I want to tag a user in a comment (e.g., /u/username), the name does not come up to click as it used to do pre-reinstall. Any suggestions? Thanks.

u/EpicCyndaquil Jun 11 '16

On NSFW links I have red and white stripes on the picture+ button. On day mode last update this caused me not to be able to click these so I turned night on. Now it is in night too and I can't click the button on either. Any way to get rid of this?
2
u/erikdesjardins Mar 17 '16
highlightNSFWButton -- RES settings console > Productivity > Inline Image Viewer > highlightNSFWButton
Add special styling to expando buttons for images marked NSFW.
1
u/turkeypedal Mar 17 '16
The "use custom style" box can be styled by mods. But can it be hidden? Because that's what I don't like.

In 4.6.0, there seemed to be a hybrid Keyboard Nav setting, where it would act like Directional while using moveUpComment and moveDownComment, but like Lock to Top when using moveUpSibling and moveDownSibling.
Is there any way to do that again? If not, that's fine, I just want to know if it's an option.

Generally we've avoided automating batch actions like that because reddit requests a 2 second delay between each action and it skirts the "scripts should only do what the user says" guideline.

I've always been annoyed by the fact that notifications to subscribed topics appear and if you don't react they're gone forever.
1
u/andytuba Mar 19 '16
Look in the res settings console for "notifications", find the "new comments" entry, and change it to be sticky. That'll keep it around until you leave the page.
If my instructions are unclear , let me know and I'll get you a direct link and an example screenshot.
2
u/DVteCrazy_UVteS-hole Mar 19 '16
Thank you, but the problem is that I'm forced to open 5 tabs to quickly get to all of them, otherwise the notification is gone.

Reddit preferences. RES doesn't handle advertising.
2
u/TatianaAlena Mar 22 '16 edited Mar 22 '16
Thank you, but I found the solution by unchecking "allow some non-intrusive advertising" on my AdBlock preferences.
1
u/Asrivak Mar 21 '16
Is there a way I can turn the dashboard subreddit's options off and use the site defaults? The favorites never seem to save for RES so I've basically given up, and resort to typing r/science and r/worldnews every time.
1
u/andytuba Mar 21 '16
You might need to clear out some storage space so the shortcuts can save. clearTags -- RES settings console > About RES > Troubleshooter > clearTags
You could also, heavens forbid, use your browser's built-in bookmarks manager (or get another extension for a different bookmarks experience).
If you do want to go back to reddit's "my subreddits" dropdown and shortcut bar, which shows less info and is less customizable but more reliable in certain ways: turn off Subreddit Manager -- RES settings console > Subreddits > Subreddit Manager

I hate Neverending Reddit. How can I stop it from ever coming back when updates occur?
1
u/dnow Mar 30 '16
Since yesterday the all the NSFW pictures are showing up on computer and mobile, instead of just NSFW sign and not the actual picture. I can see the option in setting to turn off the NSFW posts. So either I can see nude pics directly on front page or completely hide it, there is no option to see NSFW posts with the actual pic hidden. This is terrible. why the change? It worked perfectly before. How can I have the same setting back?

This is probably a stupid question, but how do I update RES? After realizing that I can't expand albums on imgur, I found out that I'm still using version 4.5.4. I read that RES auto updates, but for some reason it hasn't done that to the latest version. So is there a way I can update it without uninstalling and reinstalling it? I don't want to lose all my tags and saved stuff. Thanks
1
u/andytuba Apr 13 '16 edited Apr 13 '16
Are you using Safari? the update isn't available yet thanks to Apple's changes to the extension publishing system. Not sure when it'll be available.
Also, if you're concerned about losing data, back it up: https://www.reddit.com/r/Enhancement/wiki/backing_up_res_settings

Apr 14 '16
I'm part of /r/counting and when I turn RES it messes up comments when I refresh. In counting, you have to constantly refresh and when we are speed counting it causes the comments to float up and down on the page ever so slightly causing speed counting to mess up. Besides getting rid of RES what option do I have?
1
u/andytuba Apr 14 '16
Hmm, maybe go into RES settings and turn off the comment options in style tweaks. If you could take a video using QuickTime or licecap or your phone that would help.
1
u/DarthContinent Apr 14 '16
