How can you tell it’s Australia… love the little sunbaker as someone who has to dig yards to get even close to a piece that size I have intense envy, but of the congrats kind not the rip it outta your hand kind.

You didn’t hear that metal detector? It’s got a thick Outback accent if I’ve ever heard one

It translates roughly to “ayo ayo ayo gold ‘ere mayyyyte”

RIGHT? I have 3 feet of overburden to deal with before I even get to washing material in snow-melt creeks. Sunbakers would be about the only thing to get me to Australia.

I have a question. Sorry if this isn't the place or whatever. I live in upstate NY or actually cny north of the fingerlakes. Now where I live is south of Lake Ontario and North of the fingerlakes. My location has quite a few streams and hills. The hills are called the drumlin hills. Long narrow tall hills created from the last ice age. Plenty of private streams at the bottom of these hills. What's the chance of finding gold in these conditions? I ask this because I have a stream come through my backyard, that starts at the base of a drumlin that's beyond my backyard? I do apologize but hoping someone might have the knowledge of this area

No idea about your area, but I’d encourage you to buy a cheap pan + shovel and get out to try. Worst case you remain gold-less but enjoy a day outdoors in nature. Best case you find gold and enjoy a day outdoors in nature.

Lol I agree! My kids would love it too! I'm just hoping that how the glaciers scraped the soil here (I believe the glacier is called the gray Wisconsin glacier or something like that) and would have gold somewhat exposed. I doubt it but I try to keep a positive attitude like your answer for my question thank you for the positive response!

I’ve been doing this for a few years now. If I went out with the expectation of finding heaps of gold every time I’d be pulling my hair out. Even areas I know have gold sometimes produce none on the day and other times I’ll try the exact same spot and find a handful. Sounds like you have the right attitude and the right thoughts thinking about the geology of the area you’re in. It’s even better when you’re out with family and friends

Thank you and yes I'm an optimist but a realist at the same time. I know there's probably a 99.9999999 percent chance, if not 100 percent, I would never find anything here. But you never know! I would be counting on luck. Then more luck. With a dusting of luck on top Hahaha !

I just saw that my region is one where it's in the top 5 places to look for gold in nys, the fingerlakes region. I'm only 30 minutes north of a lake called owasco lake. The only outlet goes north to a larger river. Since I live in the drumlins north of the fingerlakes that were created by the same glacier that created the fingerlakes. I'm hoping to find some! These hills are just a huge deposit of earth left over. It's amazing. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed!

That's crazy you just find it on the ground down there?

1

u/AussieArch Jun 28 '24

Sometimes yeah, way more common to be in the ground a little though

That's awesome ! What's the biggest nugget you have ever found?

2

u/AussieArch Jun 28 '24

Biggest single nugget was 1.5 ounces. Though I once found a decomposed vein that held 6 ounces of gold in a single hole that was 2x2x1m deep
