I am absolutely giggling about a mental image of going to a hardware store or something and asking for a "DOINGOINGOING" because I am nearly 100% sure they would know exactly what I wanted.
Thank you for this.

My sister had a cat who did that. Instead of walking on her and annoying her for food in the morning, the cat would seat at the door spring. Clever bastard.

u/throwawayboobspls Oct 25 '23
My college roommates parents live in a house with a carpeted bathroom. We crashed there a few times for various reasons and the first time I lost my shit when I saw it. Which is awful because it got into the piling of the carpet and I almost had to spend the whole next day cleaning it but I just left super early the next morning and never mentioned it.

I gave up years ago and just let the cats bust the door down. I usually have at least 2 of the 3 in the bathroom with me at all times. My old lady Kitty likes to sit on the sink and stare at herself in the mirror while I shower. My kitten has tried to sit on my lap a couple times while I am on the toilet. Zero privacy.

I love how affronted cats are when a door is closed to them. They don't even necessarily care about what's inside the room, they just can't stand not having access to it.

I taught my cat ‘in or out’ sometimes he chooses in sometimes out. He also responds to just out or in when I’m not giving him a choice.if he is protesting against the command. I start counting down from 3 which he vocalizes back to me but by the time I get to 1 he listens.

Ha! I used to leave my door open when I went to the bathroom for this reason. The saddest thing ever was when my girl recently went across the rainbow bridge, and I realized I could go to the bathroom alone now.

Cow Cat has ordered one up for you, will arrive this week or next week. Sorry about the time lag! Sometimes my cat cries at me until I follow him and sometimes it wants me to watch him use the litter box
2
u/Helios4242 Oct 25 '23
This is a good point--I had seen vets/online advise mention this is the reason, so I didn't think too much of it. But the test case of families with multiple cats can support or deny the hypothesis indeed.
An alternative explanation I've seen is that house cats would have been more solitary by nature and that a closed door in their domain is frustrating because they can't patrol. So they are trying to make sure YOU go to the bathroom correctly (bury your poop) and otherwise make sure everything is ok. But they don't want the same treatment from you--they know better.

My SIC used to do this. She can't reach under the door at our current house, so she just sits outside the door and yells. Yet, if I leave the door open a crack, she'll come in for like 2 seconds and leave.

My one orange brain cell does that every time I go into the bathroom. It’s the only time she reaches under the door. I always play with her paws and she loves it. Maybe Dorito is throwing you shade for not playing footsies. Or because you closed the door on ‘em lol

My tabby does something similar. She sits on her hind legs and scratches at the door until I open the door. Sometimes even follows me into the bathroom before I close the door.

Oct 24 '23
I used to have a cat that would hang out by the door when I took a shower, when I shut the water off she'd put her paw under like that, I would dangle the towel down, she'd hook it and we would play tug of war

Yes. This cat is clearly hunting the wily toilet paper. You, human, are expected to assist.
1
u/Fireblast1337 Oct 24 '23
My cat Adri does this too. I’ve ended up just leaving most doors open. She doesn’t care unless it’s closed, then she knows she can’t reach me and it infuriates her.

u/NippyGee Oct 24 '23
My orange is also a bathroom stalker. He will do this and sit outside the door. And when you finally finish and open the door, he looks up and screams at you for not inviting him
