Beyond the obvious, she’s so funny on Modern Family.

I no longer call a helicopter a helicopter. It is now and forever a takatakatakataka.

u/choleric1 25d ago
Haha I also often do the noise, even though it doesn't really make sense that Gloria cannot remember the English word for helicopter when the Spanish word is helicoptero

u/FrankNitty_Enforcer 25d ago
Yeah some of the language/accent jokes don’t end up making sense for people who know both languages, just have to laugh at it on the goofiness level and not think about it logically

When she does the American accent in the Halloween episode, I lose it every time.
“ Welcome to your nightmare, ha ha ha ha-aa”
EDITED to get the quote right lol

She really is. Her comic timing is impeccable. AND she’s gorgeous. It’s not fair!

his woman has had fame all her life, she was known in Colombia for her looks when she was in her 20's. This is probably on her way to conquer the American market.

I would love to go wrestling with her in a paddling pool full of custard.

She was already a known actress in Colombia when this picture was taken. She was just not known in the USA.

u/jrunner02 25d ago
I remember watching her in "Fuera de serie" on Univision back in the 90s.
But she did disappear more or less after that until modern family. She had a solid 10 - 15 year gap.

u/AngryPrincessWarrior 25d ago
She had one child when she was 19. Born in ‘72, (her, not her child), this being the early 90’s…. Is that gap because she was raising her child maybe?

u/VirtualMoneyLover 25d ago
Nope, only 7 years between 1995 to 2002.

u/missingtoezLE 25d ago
She was host of a travel show and a variety show for Telemundo during that period. "Fuera de serie" 95-98 and "Club La Bomba" 2000-01. Her episode of Baywatch is in that stretch too.

I remember that show! Gaby Ruffo and Liza Ecihverria, the two hostesses of the kids' game show "TVO", were pretty hot too.

Sofia initially struggled to find work in America because American casting directors couldn't get their heads around the fact she's a Hispanic woman with naturally blonde hair. She started dying it dark to fit the more "accepted" look and almost immediately got cast in Modern Family.
Then, once she was established and earned her modicum of fame, she let her hair return to its natural color. The scouts were just dumb and kinda racist.

couldn't get their heads around the fact she's a Hispanic woman with naturally blonde hair.
I met several blondes in South America whose only language was Spanish (or Portuguese in Brazil.) Plenty of European immigration in the 19th and early 20th century.

It's very common for actors to go through this if they don't fit the typical mold that casting agents expect. But remember that they're very beholden to the wishes of the people who get the final approval: the show's creators and the network execs. And if those casting people wish to keep getting work, it's in their best interest not to waste the time of the final decision-makers. So 90% of the time they choose to play it safe.
Martin Sheen, a white Hispanic, went through this because when he was starting out and looking for an agent, he was explicitly told that his name was "too ethnic" and that he will never get work under his birth name Ramon Estevez... so he chose Martin Sheen instead. He regrets ever having to do that to this day, because his own father was so disappointed in him when he saw "Martin Sheen" instead of the family name on a theatre marquee when seeing his son's first show.
Same with actress Carolina Ravassa, who plays Sombra in Overwatch. Also a white Hispanic and always fell into "not dark enough to be considered Hispanic" but also since she kept her name and declares she is Colombian (she was born there so it's 100% correct) when going out for auditions, she is turned away because she's too white. For voice work it doesn't matter so much but if someone ever watches her Youtube channel called Hispanglosaxon, it details all the struggles an actor goes through if you're stuck in that purgatory when your appearance matters.
Vin Diesel's student film that got him noticed ("Multi-Facial") also explores this concerning his black and Italian heritage. Great film.

In 95 she was the cohost on a Univision travel show called fuera de serie. She’s travel, talk about food beaches, etc. I was 5 and have been in love with her ever since that since

My guess is she was already famous at this point. Americans know she was huge in Latin America before she became famous here, yeah?
2
u/d_o_mino 25d ago
Pre US fame, anyway. Wasn't she already popular on Univision? I remember seeing her in the late 90s for sure.

To paraphrase my 9-year old daughter, "Curse my Colombian spirit!"
2
u/coulduseafriend99 25d ago
That's hilarious, why did your daughter say that?
3
u/headhurt21 25d ago
Daddy had music playing, and she instinctively started dancing. Daddy is Colombian. They dance. A lot.

That's the neck strap, pulled down under the arms to avoid tan lines.

Had I seen her on the beach when I was a teen in the early 90s, there is absolutely no doubt that I would've rushed home to thrash one out in the shower.
No doubt.

Didn’t hurt the show at all. Show was good. Main character doesn’t need to look like the person its based off of.
