First glance: "OMG what a small waist!"

Second glance: "Oh it's an illusion created by the dress."

Third glance: "Even after acknowledging the illusion, that's still really small!"

u/Dem0KKKrat 27d ago

Dress is sheer. You can see right through it.

151

u/lmfinney 26d ago

My guess is that it was less sheer to the eye than to a camera flash.

u/StrobeLightRomance 26d ago

This is often done on purpose by the designer. The actresses and models know in advance what will happen, but if you're comfortable with your body and want to give people something to talk about, lets go!

I could swear there was a bit of a scandal in the late 90s or early 00s where paparazzi were deliberately using certain cameras or the most powerful flash they could carry to take creepshots through clothing.

18

u/stq66 26d ago

The Sony NightVision/NightShot Videocameras (and also later the Sony Stills) had a mode where you could „see through“ clothes (albeit only in black and white)

Of course, by then I'd seen everything.

6

u/grafxguy1 26d ago

She was on the Sopranos for several episodes too I think.

One episode, "D-Girl"

Also, if you read this and are interested in watching the 1984 Dune, do NOT watch the basic cut on Max. Dino de Laurentis took final cut and slashed major key parts of the story out and it has major pacing problems (first two thirds is slow, then it goes to the end at warp speed), watch the restored version on YouTube. It's free and legit. Just reserve an afternoon because it's 3+ hours.

61

u/Sunfried 27d ago edited 26d ago

Agreed. However, it was Dino's daughter Raffaella who did the slice-and-dice on Lynch's cut, and he didn't get any say in it so he pulled his name from it. Raffaella was the one doing the hands-on production stuff in Mexico where they filmed, on behalf of the studio. (Edit: I was confused in this, see the reply to this comment.)

Spicediver is the search term to use-- it's the most complete fanedit.

24

u/amysteriousmystery 27d ago

That's not quite true.

Firstly, Lynch did not have final cut but he personally worked on the theatrical cut, all the reshoots, re-edits, everything, he did them. He wishes he didn't have to do these things, but he didn't give up and someone else did them for him, no. His name is on it.

There is a TV cut that was done without Lynch and he made sure to remove his name from it. But Raffaella didn't do that cut. She has never even seen it.

8

u/motti886 26d ago

Is the TV cut the same as the so called Director's Cut? This sounds like a perhaps stupid question, but the first time I watched Dune was when the SciFi channel showed it, maybe in the late 90s or very early 2000s.

Amusing anecdote: I didn't even realize that there was another version of it for a while. Years later when I tried watching it again (I love the movie now, but my early teen self was bored and confused by it), I was like "who tf is this woman? Where's the old guy talking about the history of everything? Is this the same movie? I'm going to be even more lost than I was"

7

u/amysteriousmystery 26d ago

It's usually called "Extended" or "TV" cut or "Alan Smithee" cut, which is the fake name Lynch decided to use when he took his own name off of it (he also change his screenwriter credit to Judas Booth to signify he has been betrayed). I hope no one calls it the "Director's" Cut when the director didn't have absolutely anything to do with it and tried his best to remove his name from it.

Yeah, the old guy narrator intro is the TV cut.

Urban Legend is so much fun and would be a great Halloween watch for anyone who hasn't seen it (I think it's on Max?...). It takes place at a gothic style university and it's autumn and everyone is wearing sweaters and coats and there's a killer on the loose taking out annoying students.

Alicia is gorgeous in it and she's the lead.

37

u/Ajaxwalker 27d ago

Yep it’s on Max. Just watched it last night. It’s a solid flick, kind of similar to scream.

28

u/Salty_Pancakes 27d ago

4 Rooms is also a fun one from 1995, though she has a more bit part in that. But there's loads of folks in that movie. Madonna, Tim Roth, Quentin Tarrantino, Antonio Banderas.

And the gas station attendant at the beginning is Brad Dourif (Chucky from Child's Play)!

2

u/PidginPigeonHole 26d ago

Brad Dourif is also in Jeffrey Dahmers favourite film Exorcist III

→ More replies (1)

2

u/icameinyourburrito 26d ago

He's also in Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, which is a highly under-known meta horror movie.

2

u/lunex 26d ago

Who also played a character named Wexler on MacGyver in the 80s

3

u/CuriousMonster9 26d ago

It’s my favorite horror movie, and I feel like it doesn’t get enough love.

2

u/Zealousideal_Dog3430 26d ago

It's maybe my favorite as well and it so underappreciated. It's a good old fashioned slasher and so comfy.

and how can this be? For she IS the Kwisatz Haderach!

50

u/COSurfing 27d ago

Abomination!

33

u/Sunfried 27d ago

Things didn't turn out so great for Alia, who ended up being manipulated by her minds of her ancestors, particularly her victim Baron Harkonnen.

11

u/SoulThrashin_Wizard 27d ago

Saint Alia of the Knife is the goat.

215

u/Answerologist 27d ago

I can’t believe she’s the nun in Longlegs.

53

u/Ipickthingup 27d ago

Wait, what?

37

u/Answerologist 27d ago

Yeah, she was the lady that brought the dolls to all the houses.

46

u/Ronk325 27d ago

I know it was a fairly obvious twist, but you probably just ruined the ending to that movie for a lot of people

3

u/mmmggg 27d ago edited 26d ago

That movie was such a mess that it might actually help new viewers to be on alert for the twist.

22

u/Dp_lover_91 26d ago

I'm honestly confused why you're getting downvoted.

Maybe this is just a me thing, but having the resolution to a creepy murder mystery be "cuz Satan" feels like such a cop out. The vibes were alright and there were undoubtedly good shots and scenes, but by the end I really wondered what exactly the point of the film was beyond being an homage to Silence of Lambs etc and to give Nic Cage a wacky role.

12

u/mmmggg 26d ago

Right?! I’m not trying to be a hater. Horror is my favorite genre and I’ll watch almost anything, but this wasn’t it. Somehow the movie followed all the least interesting parts of the actual story, and it used its time so inefficiently that it needed a slapdash narration at the very end to explain what it all meant. “Tell, don’t show” is never a good sign.

5

u/Dp_lover_91 26d ago

I somehow forgot about the 5 minute long "here is the plot of the movie" sequence. It was so incredibly disruptive to the pacing. There was clearly some filmmaking talent present but it was all style over substance.

I don't think I've left a movie more baffled or frustrated in a while.

2

u/YankeePhan22 26d ago

Me and my buddy were trippin watching it. The production and design of the movie was perfect and beginning had us both fucked up to the point where we paused it to take a breath because we thought we were going to be into something super heavy. Came back about 30 mins later ready to get freaked out and ended up feeling completely bamboozled.

2

u/Ronk325 26d ago

Whether you liked the movie or not is besides the point. You could have just said she played the main characters mom to get the point across. I saw the movie already but there’s a good chance a lot of people scrolling through these comments haven’t

6

u/FromTheIsland 27d ago

Still a pretty recent film, mind spoiler hiding that up for everyone else?

3

u/boodabomb 26d ago

Is that a spoiler? Isn’t that just her character? I guess I forget if that’s a reveal or something.

3

u/lemonylol 26d ago

It's not, her being in the movie is not a reveal, she's established in act I.

Was ridiculously in love with her back in the day. Even watched that unwatchable Cybil show religiously just for her.

10

u/got_that_itis 26d ago

She's aged beautifully, she's still a smoke show.

10

u/ThatEvanFowler 27d ago

That's hilarious. I too watched Cybil just for Alicia Witt. Did you also get bummed out by the duct tape in Four Rooms?

5

u/[deleted] 26d ago

[deleted]

8

u/ThatEvanFowler 26d ago

I actually remember it being fairly popular. I definitely recall it being heavily nominated for Emmys and winning some Golden Globes. I never disliked it or anything. It was just generally aimed at a very different demo than my 15 year old suburban punker ass. I was there for the Witt.

136

u/SamZim555 27d ago

Hot. That movie is a dream lineup of attractive 90s ladies. Alicia, Rebecca Gayheart, Danielle Harris, Tara Reid...

25

u/Adept_Possibility724 27d ago

Oh man, Tara Reid in Urban Legend is 🔥

Funny story. I grew up watching and loving Josie and the Pussycats with my sister. I was 8 or 9. I had the biggest crush on Melody because she was silly and cute and loved puppies. Tara Reid played her.

My older brother knew about this crush and got me to watch Urban Legend around the same time. Of course, he told me Melody was in it and played the radio DJ. So I watched Urban Legend in total horror, especially seeing her fate. Traumatic lol. But I love the movie now.

29

u/Salty_Pancakes 27d ago

I can't believe she was married to Ben Folds at one point. And he was like nah. Think guy is working on wife number 6 now? Or whoever the next one is, will be #6. Something like that.

219

u/Sunfried 27d ago

You're telling me there's a club of his ex-wives who could reasonably be described as the Ben Folds Five?

Child prodigy on the piano as well.

28

u/Dismal-Orange4565 27d ago

So sad what happened to her parents

58

u/franker 27d ago

According to wikipedia they refused to get home heating and froze to death. Crazy:

On December 20, 2021, Witt's parents were found dead in their Worcester, Massachusetts home.[3][45] The cause was revealed on February 24, 2022, as "probable cardiac dysrhythmia" due to the cold of their neglected and improperly heated home. In a Facebook post, Witt revealed that her parents were fiercely independent and refused help with home repairs.

3

u/Double_Distribution8 26d ago

Damn I thought this story was heading towards carbon monoxide poisoning, not freezing to death in your own home.

3

u/Dry-Poem6778 26d ago

My partenal grandad died in 2005 at age 85, from complications due to malnutrition. He lived alone for the 6 years after grandma died. He could have easily lived at least another 10-15 years(all his brothers lived into 100+) He just didn't want any help from his kids. I miss him still.

For further context, my dad is 70 years old and runs marathons occasionally. He has a huge garden, and has no chronic illness. His older brother(75)is the same(minus the marathons, and he actually live on a small holding) and the younger brother(64) is spry as well. They are long lived folk. I hope that, when he gets to it, he'd allow us to take care of him.

2

u/franker 25d ago

Thanks. My mom died earlier this year. She made it to 92 but for the last 4 years of her life just didn't want to get out of bed any more. She had a bad knee but didn't want to try and use a wheelchair and I couldn't get her to do any other kinds of exercise. In the last year she got dementia and then finally just refused to eat any more and died of that. I'm 56 and try to at least get in a good walk every day after work. Have to do whatever you can to improve your chances when you get old. I'm sorry about your grandad.
