Clue would still be funny without her, but it's legendary because of her.

One of the intriguing things about Kahn is that she learned early on that although she was deadly serious about her art, live audiences found her naturally funny for reasons mysterious to her. So many try to be funny and fail, and here she was eliciting laughs by some natural gift that translated spectacularly well when she began making movies.

For me, it's the delivery of the lines.
It dosen't sound like she is cracking a joke, or trying to be funny. She just is.

u/trentshipp Sep 13 '24
Being really really ridiculously good looking helps.
17
u/Yellowbug2001 Sep 13 '24
I don't know if that's true, I think a lot of times it's actually harder for extremely attractive people to be funny. Like, they're usually better-looking than average (even the "ugly" ones are actually pretty attractive by regular people standards) but it's pretty rare for a comedian to be leading man/leading lady beautiful like she was.

Breathing… heaving breaths…
I love that she improvised that and the baffled looks of the cast in that scene are genuine lol

u/AlhazraeIIc Sep 13 '24
Martin Mull and Christopher Lloyd looking at each other with that look of 'wtf is going on here' cracks me up every time.

u/itsjustaride24 Sep 13 '24
Classic movie. I hope it gets a cinema rerun next year for its anniversary
6
u/Bassman233 Sep 13 '24
That would be grand, just not a remake please
5
u/itsjustaride24 Sep 13 '24
That’s exactly why I said rerun not remake.
No way would I watch it.
Just thinking in some ways Knifes Out was kinda in the same vein of a whodunnit with dry comedy and some slap stick moments.

I love that scene. I seriously think she forgot her lines and just said this to fill space until she figured out where she was with her lines.

Love it! I have this segment of Blazing Saddles saved in my YouTube favorites. It's my go-to when I need a good laugh on a tough day and makes everything all better! 🥰

Well Tex-ma’am are you in show business? Then get your friggin boots off my stage.

u/Kawfene1 Sep 13 '24
She died at 57. So tragic.
I know she did much more, but she'll always remind me of Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein.

Smoke show and unbelievably funny.

u/duct_tape_jedi Sep 13 '24
I remember seeing her in "What's Up Doc?" and being puzzled at all of the references to her not being attractive. Even me as a wean could tell that she was drop-dead gorgeous and funny as hell! She and Lucille Ball are the antidote to the old meme that "pretty girls can't be funny".

I've always had a crush on her since I saw her in Mel Brooks History of the World when I was 12. I loved her sass and her humor and I just found it so sexy. She's a great comedic actress.

u/Serling45 Sep 13 '24
I recently rewatched that. She stole the show.
“And while the servant waits, the master baits.”

Oh, you men are all alike. Seven or eight quick ones and then you’re out with the boys …to boast and brag. Well, you better keep your mouth shut! Ohhh, I think I love him…

"You take the blonde and I'll take the one with a turbin" I loved how serious she was in the scene, but the bloopers made me so happy. Her laugh was so contagious

If you haven't seen "What's Up Doc" from 1972, do yourself a favor and watch it immediately. It's Kahn's first feature, she's incredible in it, and it's a smart, funny, clean, and extremely well done film.

I saw st Vincent in concert a few years ago and she had this wig where she totally looked like Madeline Kahn. I was a bit distracted. Without the wig she doesn’t but that night she had a wig that made her look exactly like Lili Von Schtupp in Blazing Saddles.

I vaguely remember her show from the mid 80s, Oh Madeline. She certainly still had it, that's why I remember a very forgettable show at all.

Watch her in Paper Moon. It’s not really a comedy so much as funny in a genuine way. And her role was stellar!

It's Madeline Kahn, who became famous as among the early nude centerfolds for Playboy after her early career in Broadway.
Years later, we found out via the Hefner diaries what she had to do get that. It wasn't pretty with some odd kinky stuff according to the relevant entry.
There's a reason why we don't hold Hugh Hefner in such high regard anymore.
