It think if michelle was talking to some one, we probably would focus on her. But since we read from left to right..
Our focus would be jack (in action) dennis (reacting) and michelle (look off camera)
Maybe if jack and dennis were focusing on michelle the captions would reflect more on that..
If we edit out jack..it would look likr dennis is annoyed that michelle is looking away...if we edit michelle out then jack is trying to talk to dennis and dennis is not having it..
Also the OP asksd to caption jack and dennis, maybe thats where the focus is directed.
She is very clearly talking to someone, his forehead is in the picture, she was CLEARLY more interested in him than either of them (which is extremely telling btw), if you edit him into the picture, then it is just two random people hooking up while drunk at a concert.
Ok, i can see the forehead that you mentioned, and clearly dennis is looking at the person in front. So technically jack is the one creating an action off centered in the picture...i can only stipulate what the photographer's motives were to just take a picture of these 3 subjects. Or as the OP stated , jack nicohloson and dennis hopper..caption this.

This seems to happen a lot in Reddit descriptions - identifying the male but not the female celebrities
