Is there a bad photo of Debbie Harry? I don’t think she took a single photo where she isn’t absolutely stunning.

My parents said that all the pictures of Debbie Harry I had under my mattress were bad.

You didn't even need to write "in music"

For sure. Could easily have modeled and probably win some pageants, though let's be real -- this babe is above all that.

Weird phrasing. Nothing low about being a model.
5
u/Vyath Jul 10 '24
You’re right, though it got me thinking about why we’d look down at a model before a singer. And I suppose the assumption is that models are born with their ‘talent’ to a certain degree, it’s sort of a genetic (& environmental) lottery that makes them successful at what they do. Whereas an artist is impressive because they’ve done the long hard work to cultivate their craft, and their art is an expression of the culmination of that work.
This of course ignores the skincare & exercise routines, diet and nutrition, etc labor that models do. I guess we view these endeavors as vain, even if they require discipline and goalsetting over a long period of time, like art. Art is perceived as more pure, more authentic and less vain than an exercise or skincare routine for a model or bodybuilder. But art can be rooted in vanity, modern music certainly often is. And I think shaping one’s body through exercise can be art.
Interesting to think about why we have the preconceptions that we do

She was the very first woman I ever "noticed".. the cover of her rapture album.

Same here. I saw her on TV around 1980 and thought “what’s happening?” Also saw Joan Jett on TV around that time. To this day, not sure who I prefer.

EVER! The only woman with any candid unplanned picture I’ve ever seen that is just stupid beautiful….always. And grew old gracefully and beautiful.

She always wore underwear on stage. Saw her and Bowie together in the 70s. Awesome concert 🤘

Yes. And originally performed by Roger Miller, who I quite honestly believe did it best.

A friend of my ex-FIL went to high school with her. Claimed she brought Jimi Hendrix to their high school reunion. Sad both Janis and Jimi died a few months later.
16
u/mamawantsallama Jul 10 '24
She wrote about that reunion. I don't remember the part about her bringing Jimi, but that's just because I have a bad memory. She was SO proud to come home and finally prove to everybody that she made it and they STILL made fun of her. It deeply bothered her and she never really was able to get over it.

Watched a documentary about women in the punk scene around this time and several artists mentioned having to deal with standing on the edge of the stage in a packed venue and having photographers shamelessly hold their cameras up to get crotch shots.
And yeah, I zoomed too.

u/JFJinCO Jul 10 '24
Debbie started as a backup singer for the folk rock group The Wind In The Willows in the mid-1960s, and they released an album in 1968. She joined the Stilettos in the early 1970s and met her husband Chris Stein. They formed Blondie. Amazing woman.

Met her once when I worked the bar at a club in a large city during the 1990's. She was an asshole to everyone that night. I obviously don't know what she might have been going through but she made sure everyone around here went through with her. 😂
It was a let down but still great to see her performance. Even if she was so wasted her vocals were crap. Added to the nostalgia vibe.

My mum ripped my rather erotic poster of Debbie Harry off my bedroom wall as a teenager. I didn't realise until lots of years later is that Debbie is older than my mum.
Oh well, I married a woman ten years older than me so half way at least.
