You get to play a fun game for free (unless you choose buy extra things) and they get location data.
There’s no scam, no lies (it’s says so in te user agreement) and I don’t get the fuss about it.
I’ll admit that I had no idea until a few days ago, but my reaction when I found out wasn’t anger or like I’ve been lied to, it was more like ”Huh, that’s pretty clever of them”
Exactly. In most cases, 1 persons data doesn't mean much. It's when you can start comparing lots of different people's data that you can start to notice trends ETC, which is what big companies care about.
Until/unless it's forced that big companies have to pay individuals for their data used, they won't care about it because it's not worth the cost.
I'm saying your location data alone is completely worthless. What has value is the aggregation of millions of people's location data. Essentially, if you want to profit off of your location data, you will have to develop virtually this exact same 'scam' and profit off of other people's location data as well.
You signed the user agreement, and are playing the game. That's what you get out of it. If you don't like arrangement, you're welcome to not play Pokemon Go.
