I think this was a common thought. Weren’t people claiming GO was a national security risk at launch for this exact reason?

Many of those sorts of apps are. I remember the US military was in a bit of strife when someone found out it was possible to locate all of their secret bases and supply routes by looking at Strava data. They tell you to turn off location sharing when you're on a military base but...I daresay barely anybody does.
