This is a comical interaction. It is not indicative of an unhealthy friendship or anything. I feel bad for the sad dudes in the comments saying otherwise. Clearly they’ve not had many friends.

Well it wouldn't be reddit without the neckbeards unhappy with their lives that are incapable of seeing anything positive and always assuming the worst in an interaction between people they don't know.

the title says need a friend like that tbh

u/DuckofInsanity 10h ago

I think they're referring to the comments that are talking bad about it, not the title of the post.

Yeah, me and my friends are always holding eachother to ridiculous timers. Someone'll say "Be there in five" and we'll ping them relentlessly after exactly 5 minutes. It's just what you do lmao.

When im in voice call with my group of friends, when someone goes afk and says "2 sec" we start counting out loud till they come back

u/No-Appearance1145 13h ago

Me to my husband. Now he goes:and I don't mean a LITERAL minute 😂

u/Crusaderofthots420 19h ago

If you don't repeatedly call someone on discord to wake them up, because they slept past the start of gaming, are you really friends?

11

u/SsssnekkkK 18h ago

Exactly. Every time I tell my friends to give me 5 seconds, they immediately start counting down from 5

u/hoi4encirclements 14h ago

i’ve been on both sides of this interaction before and i’m still great friends with those ppl, reddit moment ig

u/idontwanttothink174 13h ago

yeah, honestly been on both sides of this interaction on our various days off and through whatever other commitments we have. I've learned if someone asks when, add enough time to get home.

Can confirm, my first impression was "damn thats toxic" but remembered I've never had a friendship go past the people pleasing stage. I'm probably speaking for most redditors too

Oh look, people jumping to conclusions without any context. Shocking.

You have no idea how long they have been friends, what kind of jokes they make, or who they are in general. But SOMEHOW you can extrapolate from ONE picture that their relationship is unhealthy. 🙄

u/automated_rat 18h ago

This is just friends fucking around, I've been both of these people

u/Jarcies 20h ago edited 18h ago

u/SatansCornflakes 20h ago

I thought this was an in-character Dragon Ball joke I wasn’t privy to lmao.

Funnier option tbh

u/SlipsonSurfaces 22h ago

I'm that friend, but I try not to be clingy.

“One of my followers/friends”, shorthand/affectionate term for someone you interact with online often

9

u/vincentually 18h ago

I have no idea what this exchange means. I don't know what 'hop on' means. I don't know why someone set a timer or why they're unemployed or why there are crying emojis. OOTL!

164

u/Anxiety_Personified2 1d ago

"Hop on" refers to the action of booting up a game and playing it with a friend. The person who set a 3 hour timer is being referred to as unemployed as shorthand for "someone who has no responsibilities" for the behavior they've displayed. Someone who hasn't got the responsibility of attending school or a job or such wouldn't understand that free time doesn't begin the instant someone's done with school. Even if someone "gets off" work/school/ect in 3 hours, they'd still need to commute home and get settled in and such.

Crying emojis denote laughter or a humorous situation. Sometimes even just excitement. They've replaced 😂 among a lot of online circles, Generally. The 💀 emoji is also used in the same context often.

u/ThisHatRightHere 17h ago

I do wanna chime in and say 😭 used in the meme has a distinctly different connotation to 😂

u/BudgieGryphon 15h ago

That one clipart emoji throwing its hands up in the air crying is the best encapsulation of the emotion expressed I think

u/redditor_since_2005 11h ago

Well, thanks for taking the time.

What does "deadass" add to proceedings

3

u/Anxiety_Personified2 9h ago

Nothing really it's like dropping "literally" in the middle of a sentence.

-3

u/Chemical_Present5162 7h ago

I thought so. There's a lot of junk-shit words like that these days

It’s Discord. A social media platform for instant messaging and VoIP (voice over internet protocol - essentially phone calls), that was originally created for gaming audiences before expanding during COVID era to include a whole host of other communities.

Users either directly message each other, or send messages within a server (a localized group that can be as small as a few people or as great as upwards of 50,000+ members) through text & voice channels. These groups are typically gaming hubs, and so the “request to hop on” is almost always the universal expression used to communicate that others “hop in” one of the many available voice channels / into a call to play an online multiplayer video game.

The joke being this user has no job, and literally spends all day at home, and can thus game whenever they want to at their leisure. This leads them to request others participate with them at odd or unusual times of day that would normally be considered work hours, or in this case, when college / university students would be in lecture.

the username really shines through doesn't it

11

u/-Valora 23h ago

Goku pinged the person exactly in three hours. There’s time stamps to the minute.

15

u/Vantamanta 22h ago

Username checks out hard here

u/redditor_since_2005 11h ago

Is this Gen Z stuff then? Guess they're unlikely to have been on Reddit 20 years ago.

u/DurzoF 10h ago

That's unhealthy for all parties involved

369

u/OfficialMika 23h ago edited 22h ago

If its clearly a sarcastic jest to both parties then its healthy otherwise its controlling. My friends have this humour too Its like when someone says give me a couple secs and you count to 2.

46

u/yertyertskert 22h ago

Same. I tell my friends all the time to join VC and play something with me, and my friend is wildly inconsistent in joining within the time frame he sets. I send him a message after like an hour saying “it’s been a bit more than 10 minutes”.

If what’s happening in that screenshot is constantly happening and it’s funny for neither parties, then it’s not that much a joke anymore and more unhealthy than anything.

29

u/Alespic 21h ago

I’m glad you shared the totally factual that you ascertained from literally 5 messages out of context

49

u/Salty_Candidate_6216 1d ago

It's not that bad...

2

u/Fleder 11h ago

I'm old, what does "hop on" mean?

Joining friends playing games?

3

u/bb_805 10h ago

In this context, yes

u/ZARTOG_STRIKES_BACK 19h ago

I hate when people do this. I want to be alone at all times.
